Update #20

Diorama Release & Friday Specials

Dear Backers,

Once again it’s Friday and as always that means Friday specials. However, we’d like to start out by focusing on the project that has taken up a lot of our time these last few weeks - The Diorama.

Diorama

We have finally released the diorama scene, which depicts a combat scenario that takes place in a jungle/ruins setting. The scene can now be downloaded and explored, although it should be noted that Jagged Alliance: Flashback is currently in pre-production and both the style and core features are subject to change.

To navigate the scene simply press space to jump to different camera points. You can choose between 3 different zoom levels by pressing 1, 2 and 3. To exit the scene simply press ESC :)

You can download the scene in the links below:

PC Build         Mac Build         Linux Build

Please note that the Linux build has not been tested, so we don’t know if it works properly.

Friday Specials

We love guns and and we want a lot of them in Jagged Alliance: Flashback and a few people from the community have mentioned the weapon smugglers, arms dealers and a black market, so the natural follow up would be to create the following Tiers:

$650 Gunneck Rampage Tier: Howdy, I got a bullet with your name on it, but you still get: All previous DIGITAL REWARDS + Become an arms dealer (Help co-design the arms dealer and the name of the shop + co-write 3 responses) Limited (3)

Friday Special

$850 Slim Shady Business Tier: You got some sweet rhymes, so you get: All previous rewards + Become the weapon smuggler in the game and have him named after you. (Co-write 5 responses of your choice) Limited (1)

Did you miss it?

As a big thanks to Obsidian and inXile for their support throughout this Kickstarter, we want to give you the chance to re-discover their great projects. If you somehow missed out on Project Eternity or Wasteland 2, then please give their “slacker backer” a look.

      @Full Control:
Thanks for your hint with the Space Hulk screenshots.
But are there more than the two screenshots I managed to find on the web site?
I don't want to sound too shallow... graphics is not the most important part of a game in general. But the style in the Diorama scene is too much like Torchlight for me so that it doesn't cause any excitement in me but instead it disillusioned me somewhat.

So, do you think there is any way you can show us a glimpse of what the final game might look like before the KS campaign ends?

It's something we're also aiming to do but keep in mind this was made in 2 weeks by more or less 1.5 person so.. Web version up tomorrow :)

The build runs very smooth on my Ubuntu 13.04 64-bit station.
I like the hand painted textures, which will probably ensure that game doesn't look too outdated in some 10 years time.
      Great pre-production work!

I really like the art style, only thing that looks out of place is the reflectivity of the guy who's shooting. Other than that it's pretty cool :)

    11. Fb_profile_picture.small

Creator Sami Marsch on May 17, 2013

I like your art direction. Those hand painted textures look beautiful! I think you should just use higher specs for you art assets. You are aiming for desktop computers so you don't have to limit your game this much. Even if you plan to port this later to tablets you can easily use more polygons. You could also add specular maps and try to generate normal maps from your diffuse maps. You could also checkout Unity's build in post processing options. Also online unity player version of the diorama would be nice. Sharing it would be lot easier and getting more pledges woud be easier.

Creator Nakano on May 17, 2013

Unity web player / Youtube video (or something like this http://www.neckbreakingview.com/en.php) might have been a better choice to show the diorama. I doubt news sites will cover a downloadable exe. Actual game hopefully doesn't have that much action at the same time as it's turn based and not plan&go :) Otherwise good job. I guess I can accept the art direction, though I also hoped a little more realism. The content counts most!

Looks nice for a prototype. The scene is, however, not very clear. It's hard to see what is actually going on and who is where. Also, the scene is very small. Is this representative of a sector's size?

    18. Missing_small

Creator Vasco on May 17, 2013

I wanted to write "The scene looks very intense." Why can't I modify my comment, dear kickstarter?

    19. Missing_small

Creator Vasco on May 17, 2013

Thanks for the diorama, in particular the linux build which worked for me on a 64bit gentoo! The scene looks where intense. I hope that the graphics style will be a little less cartoony like a lot of the other people said already. I really hope we make it to goal in the remaining 6 days...

    20. Gif_ling_pants.small

Creator TheRealCuran on May 17, 2013

@Sakaram: I actually assumed, that they just painted the blood over (I didn't check the textures!) to save some time. But yes, a little bit less cartoonish (or you need to go cel shading all the way, which I wouldn't like to see for JA:F).

    21. Gif_ling_pants.small

Creator TheRealCuran on May 17, 2013

Thanks for the diorama! Looks pretty good, considering how much time you had to prepare it.

The only sentiment I'd like to echo is: less cartoony, more gritty/mature (not necessarily dark, as we are going to be on a Caribbean island). If that can be done, I'm pretty sure with full assets and work put into them, it'll look great.

Just one question: will the final game be installable without its own version of Mono on Linux? Because Mono is included in all major distributions and it is just so annoying to have the same stuff multiple times on your HDD (otherwise, not sure Unity can do this, release a native build for x86-64 and maybe x86, though I doubt anybody still has one of those for gaming). If you go the extra mile and package the game for, say Debian and derived distributions like *buntu, you can ensure, you get the versions you need (I can help with packaging for Debian).

    22. Missing_small

Creator Sakraman on May 17, 2013

Wow, I just realized the light effect change when we change the camera angle. Very interresting effect, it put some life/realism. I think the cartoon effect is exagerated just because there's too much blood and it's too red. Don't get me wrong, I expect and want some gore in this game but right now, the blood just looks fake. Keep up your good work.

      @FC

Ahh didnt know that bump maps were time intensive, cheers.

I guess it really doesnt matter, if its moddable I can just replace any textures with higher res versions :P (Tree trunks, vegetation and rocks come to mind)

I do love all the cover in the scene

      Looks great!

    25. Missing_small

Creator Nater on May 17, 2013

I know it's not the final product, but definitely drop the cartoony, Torchlight-like textures if that's the look you were going for. JA:F needs to be gritty and more visceral like JA2 was in it's time or you will lose immersion. My suggestion would be to look at games like JA:BiA, Company of Heroes 2, and/or even XCOM for a current game art style befitting a Jagged Alliance game in 2013/14.

    26. Fc-logowhiteb.small

Creator Full Control on May 17, 2013

Vortex: Please note that bump maps need time to create. If you want to have an impression on final graphics, have a look at Space Hulk Screenshots. This shall demonstrate the art direction in which we'll take the game.

looks terrible? I have waited a very long time for a true JA game with a modern system. That looks beautiful!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    29. Sr_avatar_03.small

      Creator Vortex - Syndicate?Satellite Reign 3.93 on May 17, 2013

Hmm was expecting a bit more. The scene could really use some bump mapping etc. The rock on ground and the walls etc look weird without them popping out.

Same goes for the palm tree leaves look... i dunno like ancient tech :P Also blood could use some gloss.

Overall not bad but yeah I wanna echo the rest in saying its a little too cartoonish and could def use with bump mapping and some more shaders

    30. Av_linux.small

Creator fedsoatk on May 17, 2013

Thanks, I like it! My only concern, as already noted in other comments, is the cartoon style that in my mind doesn't match well with JA, but I guess it depends on the limited time available to create the diorama and I hope higher quality textures will be there in the future.
(build works fine on Ubuntu 12.04)

    31. Missing_small

Creator Roy Rosengård on May 17, 2013

That... looks fairly terrible. Come on, man.

    32. Shirou.small

Creator Celeres on May 17, 2013

It looks really nice, albeit a bit too much on the cartoony side. It's still a really good aesthetic choice for the Carribean setting, the (supposed) overall tone of the game and besides, who would want to look at a gray ultra-realistic level from a bird's eye view, for hours on end no less? Keep it simple so you can make out the level details easily.

The characters and weapons are a bit hard to distinguish from the level, and although outline or glow shaders will no doubt fix that, they were still a quite bit too dark and also shiny. Save that for the wet characters. Phong really doesn't look all that good in my eye, but that's just my opinion.

@Jon: This is a small Diorama, not showing off the size of the full maps we have planned. There will be smaller sectors, of course. But there'll also be much, much larger ones.

    37. Warrior_1_.small

Creator GermanMG on May 17, 2013

The Diorama was intended to show off color scheme, some combat effects and overall art style of the game. We got confirmation that it does not represent a full sector in finished JAF.

    38. Fb_profile_picture.small

Creator Jon Hallin on May 17, 2013

I hope the real maps will be a fair bit larger than this. I have been playing Full Control's Frontline Tactics (Available free on Steam. http://www.frontline-tactics.com/) and the levels there are roughly the size of this diorama. It's a fun game, but it sure isn't Jagged Alliance.

    39. Tw2-wolf2_quadrat.small

      Creator LordCrash - OD | OOoE | WoOS on May 17, 2013

Wow, that Diorama scene is really cool, thanks for releasing some kind of prototype.

      But I have two concerns:
      - The textures/level of detail is not very high.Though it looks nice from the far away zoom level, in the closest zoom level the whole scene looks like a game from the past and not like one based one modern techniques and graphics.
      - The water looks really strange so far, nothing like "real" water. And the edges of the pool are very edgy, no smoothness there though I think that this will be changed in the final version.
      - The very cartoonish look is a matter of taste. I would prefer a more realistic and gritty look but I can live with the one present in the diorama. I only hope that it wont become TOO cartoonish....

And it's very nice from you to mention the slackerbacker option for Wasteland 2, Torment and Project Eternity. I love that new culture of support between the (indie) developers on kickstarter! :)
