A Hard Rock Album Project of covers of African American Musicians and Bands. From Marvin Gaye to Tom Morello, Fishbone & Sevendust

"Uncovered Obsidian" is a Musical Project collecting a set of Cover Songs originally recorded by Black Hard Rock Artists, many associated with the Black Rock Coalition formed by Vernon Reid (of the Band Living Colour) to highlight and showcase just how many different artists just in the last 20 years have been inspired or were working in concert with their efforts to help break down and climb over social and racial barriers in the music industry.  I was member of the BRC almost 20 years ago and this project is my own thanks to all the friends - some of whom are now family - that I first met back then, their courage to make the music they wanted to make despite how the industry ignored them, and told them they should just make "R&B" or "Rap" like all the other black people was and is amazing.  Music is about Freedom, if you can't make the music you want to make - you are not free.  Many things have changed since then, many things are better, but their courage has not.

I've been a musician for 30 years, and released my own first Solo CD "Re-Evolutionize" - playing all the instruments and vocals myself - in 2008. Now I'm turning what I've learned during all that time to this project - to honor all of these men and women who bucked the odds.  Some of them ultimately reached a wide audience - many of them did not - nearly all of them deserve to.

As the project progresses it will be documented on the new website http://uncoveredobsidian.supereshops.com and via it's Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/UncoveredObsidian) and Twitter (http://www.twitter.com/UObsidian) Pages.

One Song from Each of the Following Bands will be Included (Covered) in the Uncovered Obsidian Project.

Andrew Roachford

Website Andrew Roachford, born in London, was the main force behind the band Roachford, who scored their first success in 1989 with the hits "Cuddly Toy" and "Family Man". Formed in 1987, the line-up was Andrew Roachford (vocals, keyboards, percussion), Chris Taylor (drums), Hawi Gondwe (guitars) and Derrick Taylor (bass guitar).

Bad Brains

Bad Brains is a hardcore punk band formed in Washington, D.C., in 1977. They are widely regarded as among the pioneers of hardcore punk, though the band’s members objected to this term to describe their music. They are also an adept reggae band, while later recordings featured elements of other genres like funk- heavy metal, hip-hop and soul. Bad Brains are followers of the Rastafari movement.

Fishbone

Website Fishbone is a U.S. alternative rock band formed in 1979 in Los Angeles, California, which plays a fusion of ska, punk rock, funk, hard rock and soul. Critics have noted of the band: "Fishbone was one of the most distinctive and eclectic alternative rock bands of the late '80s. With their hyperactive, self-conscious diversity, goofy sense of humor, and sharp social commentary, the group gained a sizable cult following during the late '80s, yet they were never able to earn a mainstream audience.

Follow For Now

Website Follow for Now was an American funk metal band from Atlanta, Georgia. At the height of their popularity in 1990, they headlined Atlanta's Center Stage Theater on New Year's Eve without a record contract, although the two opening bands had already released several albums.

King's X

Website King's X is an American hard rock band that combines progressive metal, funk and soul with vocal arrangements influenced by gospel, blues, and British Invasion rock groups. Katy,TX

Living Colour

Website Living Colour is an American rock band from New York City, formed in 1984. Stylistically, the band's music is a creative fusion influenced by free jazz, funk, hip hop, hard rock, and heavy metal. Their lyrics range from the personal to the political, in some of the latter cases attacking Eurocentrism and racism in America.New York,NY

Lock Up

Lock Up was a rock band that featured Tom Morello on guitar before Rage Against the Machine was formed. In early 1987, Lock Up signed a production deal with Third Story Music, which was the company associated with Herb Cohen, by Evan Cohen, who later ran Manifesto Records. Cohen brought the band to the attention of Anna Statman, who was an A & R person at Slash Records. In 1988, Statman moved to a new job at Geffen Records, and Lock Up was her first signing at Geffen, in mid-1988

Moke

Moke formed in London, England in 1997, composed of John Hogg (vocals, guitar), Sean Genockey (guitar), Alex Evans (bass guitar), and John Morgan (drums).[2][3] Moke signed to London indie label Dorado Records. The band recorded and co-produced a debut album, Superdrag (1998), described by JT Griffith of Allmusic as "hyper-eclectic, mixing a strong love for Led Zeppelin (à la compatriots Reef) with hints of rap-rock, blues, reggae, and of course classic rock"London,

Mother's Finest
Website Mother's Finest are a funk rock group from the US South. Their music is a blend of funky rhythm, heavy guitars and expressive R&B singing. Atlanta ,GA

Nickelbag

Nicklebag was a criminally underexposed hard rock from the late 90s. Steve Salas was the guitar whiz from Color Code, while Bernard Fowler has sung with the Stones and Ryuichi Sakamoto. They're backed up here by Bernie Worrell (Funkadelic / Talking Heads) and produced -- loudly -- by Bill Laswell.

Ra

Band Website Ra is an American alternative metal band from Los Angeles, California, taking their name from the Egyptian sun god. The band has been around since the 1990s, but did not actually evolve into its current form until 2002. Their music was described as "exotic not familiar, heavy not funky, direct not sophisticated, sensual not soulful, unrelenting not cathartic."

Sevendust

Website Sevendust is an American Heavy Metal band from Atlanta, Georgia. Formed in 1994 by bassist Vince Hornsby, drummer Morgan Rose and guitarist John Connolly. After their first demo, lead vocalist Lajon Witherspoon and guitarist Clint Lowery joined the group. Following a few name changes, the members settled on the name Sevendust and released their self-titled debut album on April 15, 1997.Atlanta,GA

Skunk Anansie

Website Skunk Anansie are a British band [2] band whose members include Skin (born Deborah Dyer, 3 August 1967, Brixton), Cass (born Richard Keith Lewis, 1 September 1960, London), Ace (born Martin Ivor Kent, 30 March 1967, Cheltenham) and Mark Richardson (born 28 May 1970, Leeds).

Subject To Change

WebsiteSubject to Change was a rock music band formed in 1991 featuring the lead vocals and lyrics of actress and singer Cree Summer. The band was signed to the Capitol record label and recorded one album, Womb Amnesia. The album was a funk-rock fusion album that reflected the popular grunge of the time.Los Angeles,CA

Super 8

WebsiteSuper 8, was an L.A. band that Bronx Style Bob (Kaleel) sang lead for in the '90s. This disc falls somewhere between the soul-minded retro-rock of Lenny Kravitz and the Seattle grunge of Pearl Jam and Stone Temple Pilots.Los Angeles,CA

Total Eclipse

Website When Total Eclipse was formed in the early '90s, some of its members had impressive resumes. Lead singer Bernie K had been with the superb all-black heavy metal band Sound Barrier, while guitarist Victor Johnson had been a member of the fun and slightly less obscure Bus Boys. This metal/hard rock release -- sort of Living Colour meets Mother's Finest meets Led Zeppelin -- isn't as original as either Sound Barrier or the Bus Boys, but it isn't anything to be embarrassed by either. Los Angeles,CA

Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter

In order to do this project properly the recording system (a G4 Mac w/Audacity) that I used for my original Solo CD will need to be replaced with a newer system and newer software. Licensing for all cover versions will have to be paid for up front (which is a major reason the first 4 tracks have not already been released, even though they've been recorded) so that all original artists will be fairly and properly compensated for their work. Some have done well in the Music Industry some have not. Just this year in 2012, Jerry Gaskill the drummer from King's X suffered a near fatal heart attack, yet recovered enough to get married, then lost his home and all his possessions in Hurricane Sandy. Every little bit can help, and they all deserve it IMO. Promotion, Advertising and Videos will need to be produced to get the word about the project out and hard copy CD produced and sent to College and other Radio outlets as well as Mp3 Download Sites (Amazon, iTunes) etc. A new Website, Twitter & Facebook Page will also need to be setup and maintained. To really do this I would need about $5000 which is a fairly modest budget to get the hardware, software, licensing and promotion paid for, but I'm only setting my Kickstarter Project at $2.500 so that I have a better chance of reaching the goal. With Luck people will listen and enjoy, then perhaps, start to search out other material by some of these same artists.
