About

"Beyond the Arena: Off script, but on the record" is an intimate look behind the scenes of life for actors, directors, and crew at the Theatre in the Round - the oldest continuously-operating theater in Minneapolis MN.

Photographed in black and white and in the tradition of documentary photography pioneered more than 100 years ago, the collection of nearly 300 photographs show the agony and ecstasy of actors preparing for roles over two full seasons of performances.

Actors work with one another on character development. Directors lead and guide the characters and set the stage. Crew members prepare the stage and manage the technical elements. All performers and crew at this theater are part-timers, who keep their day jobs, but this is a place that unleashes the best that creative people have. They all have experience ranging from high school to The Julliard School, and others have stage credits from other regional theaters to Hollywood films - together they are devoted to the primal energy of live community theater.

The photographs trace the rehearsals and off-stage relationships actors and crew have as they prepare their characters for performances inside the deeply personal stage set "in the round." From the first read-through of the script, to the final bow of the preview performances before opening night, the actors are cast in both their relationships to one another and the lone search to find the character's life deep within.

An exhibit of 25 of the best photographs is planned to open the 67th season at Theatre in the Round in the Fall, 2018. A touring show through the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St Paul MN is planned at five sites  committed to showing high quality projects about the arts. A book of photographs with narratives from directors and actors describing their work in the theater is also planned to accompany the show's premier in the Fall, 2018.

Risks and challenges

There is the risk that the photographs will be damaged in shipment to various locations throughout the Twin Cities. There needs to be a professionally-inspired shipping process akin to shipping any form of visual art to protect the prints. This is a significant challenge for the exhibit organizer.

While the project does not formally require approval, model releases will be sought from all subjects of the photographs in the touring show. Some subjects may be reluctant to release rights to their image, and the challenge will be for the organizer of the exhibit, in coordination with theater-involved people, to help actors, directors and crew make the decision to release their rights for the exhibit and publications only as they relate to this project. More than 20 releases have been obtained thus far for photographs that are expected to be a part of the show.
