About

Sixty-Five excellent authors unite for the second Drabbledark anthology! The Drabbledark anthology series features 100-word micro fiction stories known as drabbles. Despite their length, drabbles are still stories with a beginning, middle, and at least the hint of an ending. They are tiny doses of fiction that can be read  and enjoyed in a minute or two, perfect for lunch breaks at work, standing in line, or readers with busier lifestyles that can't commit to sitting down to read full-fledged short fiction or novels.  Drabbledark II is a collection of chilling Dark Science Fiction, Horror, and Dark Fantasy short fiction.

Within the pages of Drabbledark II are 101 stories by both new and established veterans of short speculative fiction including:  Alyson Faye, Andrea Allison, B.B. Blazkowicz, Brandon Barrows, C. Cooch, Catherine J. Cole, Christina Sng, Cieran Cooper, CR Smith, Dennis Mombauer, Denzell Cooper, Douglas Prince, Eddie D. Moore, Elizabeth Dearborn, G. D. Penman, Gabrielle Bleu, Gary Cuba, George Nikolopoulos, Greg Fewer, Gregg Chamberlain, Harshal D., Holly Schofield, I.E. Kneverday, Jack Wolfe Frost, Jade Swann, James Downe, James Ebersole, Jez Patterson, Jill Kiesow, Joachim Heijndermans, John Foyt, John H. Dromey, John Hoggard, Jonathan Ficke, Joshua Scully, Karen Heslop, Karen Thrower, Kelly Matsuura, Larry Hodges, Liam Hogan, Maddy Hamley, Matt Hill, Matthew Barron, Matthew Stevens, Maura Yzmore, Michael Nicholson, Michele Brittany, Mike Murphy, Neel Trivedi, Patrick Winters, R. Daniel Lester, Renee Firer, Robert Dawson, Russell Hemmell, Ryan Benson, S.E. Casey, Scott Hughes, Simon Pinkerton, Stuart Hardy, Stuart Conover, Tianna Grosch, Tiffany Michelle Brown, Val Rigodon, Wendy Nikel, and Zoey Xolton.

So what do we need?

Funding to pay authors for their stories. Despite the 100-word length, each of these authors put work into trimming and polishing their stories to make a powerful micro package. We believe authors should be compensated for their work and this anthology will not launch unless the goal is made allowing authors to make at least .01 a word for their stories. But we want them to be compensated much more than that. Our goal would be to pay authors at least .06 per word which is industry standard professional rates. Drabbledark I almost reached this goal, ending with funding of .05 per word for authors.

So here are our funding goals:

$750 - .01 per word for our authors, the minimum to get this project off the ground.

$850 - .02 per word for our authors.

$950 - .03 per word for our authors.

$1050 - .04 per word for our authors.

$1150 - .05 per word for our authors.

$1250 - .06 per word for our authors. Pro rates as defined by SFWA.

STRETCH GOAL: If we manage to fund authors at pro rates we will be thrilled. However, if we reach $1,500 we will reopen submissions and add twenty more stories to the anthology.

Why the increase in funding goal from Drabbledark I?

With the first anthology, we funded with a little under $600 and ended up paying authors .05 a word due to an author volunteering to do the professional formatting for us on a volunteer basis. Even with that expense out of the equation, we ended up having to pay for all paperback shipping out of pocket and also realized just how much PayPal, the method of payment for authors, penalizes for sending money out of the country. We love fiction from authors all over the world and feel this is something that makes our anthology special as thirteen countries were represented in the first anthology. But PayPal fees were crazy, asking between $3-$10 to send payments to other countries. Since a little over half of our authors live outside the US, we ended up paying a lot out of pocket and have adjusted for this in this KS campaign.

Risks and challenges

The only major risk, since the stories are already collected for the anthology, is that the campaign does not fund. If we do not reach our funding goal the anthology will not get off the ground. We believe in paying our authors for their stories and wouldn't have it any other way.
