The Wandering is an organization that strives to enrich the lives of those it brings together. Stepping out of your comfort zone, paying it forward, and sharing ideas is how we explore the human spirit.
We want to start building an on and offline community that is based on these principles. We're calling it The Wandering. We'll use our web series - The Wandering Life - to begin spreading this idea. We think this will be the best way for us to go out and live, market, and challenge our mission statement.
So, on June 9th, we’re hitting the road in our RV and traveling through all 12 western US states within 12 months. We’re going to stay completely self-sufficient and rely solely on our know-how, creativity, each other, and of course the RV to get by. We'll film all of our travels, interactions and explorations- the whole journey- and create THE WANDERING LIFE, an original web series that we'll host on our site- TheWanderingLife.org.
- Every other week, we'll air a new episode.
- From interviews with strangers to outdoor adventures, every episode will take on it's own style and personality.
- On our route, we'll visit different destinations recommended to us along the way. If we're in Denver, and someone has a cool place they'd like for us to check out, we want to know about it!
- Each episode will be built upon a foundation- a common theme that includes stepping out of your comfort zone, paying it forward, and sharing knowledge.
THE ROAD AHEAD
While on the road, we’ll find out if we can live a healthy, productive and sustainable lifestyle all while making our own schedule, traveling, working, and pursuing numerous opportunities. We want to share this experience with as many people as possible and The Wandering allows us to do that.
IT ALL STARTS HERE:
...with a vision, hard work, some creativity, and a little help. We’re actually looking forward to the challenges that are going to come with living and working out of an RV for a year. We believe values like stepping out of your comfort zone, paying it forward, and sharing knowledge have real value in today’s world and we know we'll have to practice these beliefs on a daily basis if we're going to be successful.
We’re also pumped about exploring the open spaces and big sky of the American West. From hiking, kayaking, to surfing- we know we'll capture some amazing footage outdoors. Our cameras are great for shooting live action so we'll include a lot of that in the series. Rush (our pooch) shot the opening scene of the video and we're stoked about the potential of more awesome shots from our 4-legged cameraman.
The funds we raise from this campaign won't be used to pay for our personal day-to-day living expenses. We plan on working while on the road. We talk about this more under the "Risks and challenges" section.
Funds raised through Kickstarter will be allocated towards producing The Wandering Life, building our website, incorporating, marketing, and maintaining the RV.
Risks and challenges
The first and most obvious challenge we face is the challenge of earning money. Squeaky Clean Windows- a commercial and residential window cleaning company Carson has owned and operated since 2010, has been successful and will serve as one of our primary income earners.
We also want to utilize our own personal skills to earn money such as: playing gigs, videography, web design, and more.
Another challenge we face is keeping the RV running. We've put countless hours into the restoration, and hopefully when our campaign has concluded, we'll have the funds to finish what we've started. We've already replaced brakes, tires, plugs, wires, and we're more than capable of making repairs on the road.
Our biggest long term challenge is growing The Wandering name. The website is almost done so we feel like we're right on track. We also want to use the RV to spread the word so eventually, we'd like to paint on our logo and a qr code. We think the fact that we'll be including other people's stories and content on the site is huge and it should definitely help us build a community.
Some of the more minor challenges we face include:
Taking care of our K-9 companion, Rush. Rush is up to date on all of his vaccinations and we'll have a chip put in him before we go. We'll keep him on a leash as much as possible and he'll even have his own bed in the RV!
Dealing with changing and sometimes violent weather. One of the reasons we're leaving in June is so we can plan the route around the mercy of the seasons. We'll be up north in the summer and when it begins to cool down, we'll head back south.
Dealing with the stress and fatigue of living on the road with the same people all day everyday. Look, we're not naive. We know we're going to get tired of each other. We've already started to implement little ideas to help make everybody more comfortable. For example, we're bringing some camping equipment in case someone wants to get out of the RV for a night and enjoy some privacy.
The video is just a small sample of the amount of work we've put into the RV and the project so far. It's been fun and we look forward to continuing the adventure with you. Thanks for stopping by and don't forget to check out some of our awesome rewards!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
