About this project
For the past several months, our team of talented professionals has been working on the production of an upcoming character documentary, Kumari: The Jagat Lama Story. We would like to introduce you to Jagat, our friend and inspiration. Born into a large, impoverished family, Jagat was too weak to work in the fields so he instead made an unprecedented decision to pursue an education. He fulfilled this dream in Kathmandu, Nepal wrestling his way to become a health care educator and trekking guide in his native Himalaya. Soon after, Jagat received news that his father was badly injured. He rushed home, planning to put his father on his back and hike over eight hours to the nearest medical facility. But he arrived only in time to hear his father’s final words: "Jagat, take what you have learned and bring it to our people so that others don't have to die like I do. You are the hope of our people." This pivotal moment in Jagat’s life led him to create life-altering community resources including: ·
-A trekking guide company: Independent Trekking Guides Cooperative ·
-The organization: Health and Education for Nepal ·
-A scholarship fund that empowers Kumari locals to receive education with the requirement that they return to serve their community. ·
-An elementary school ·
-A women’s skill and health center
The most recent project is a medical clinic that is due to open in March 2013. Our goal is to have our cameras there to document this event. We believe it is imperative to share the inspiring story of Jagat, his work and our hope for the future of the people of Kumari. We would like to invite you to partner with us to turn this film into reality. So far, we have raised over $22,000 of the $100,000 we need to produce this film. The total cost covers the expenses of bringing the film crew to Nepal for one month, secures equipment, and pays the trekking fees to the local cooperative. We are excited that Principal Media has offered to cover the costs of distributing the film. Our mutual goal is to premiere the film at MIP TV at Cannes Film Festival and introduce it to the international market.
With much gratitude we are happy to inform you that one of our sponsors, KEEN Footwear, will be matching every dollar raised in this campaign up to the amount of $7,500!
Your support will bring us to the goal we need to bring the team to Nepal and capture this unique story of one man's journey.
Risks and challenges
It is a huge undertaking to bring a group of media professionals overseas to unfold a story of a native son and his remote region. We will encounter harsh weather conditions, high altitude technology challenges, language barriers, and reluctant subjects in our investigative journalism. We are a strong team that will lift each other up through these challenges and strategically find ways to integrate local support to bring us through hard times.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
