I began drawing Portable Fortitude in 2007 when I offered a few friends some sketches to keep them safe from terrible fates. It was a paranoid year, and I'd run out of practical solutions. I glued the drawings to some playing cards and distributed them as pocket-sized icons. My friends encouraged me to complete a whole deck of protective icons, and I spent the next three years working on the project, while also working several day jobs and struggling with a good many of the disasters this deck will protect you from.
In the fall of 2010, when the deck was complete, I was able to raise enough money to print 1000 decks as fully playable, professional playing cards - largely by asking friends and family to pre-order a deck. The decks became more popular than I'd anticipated, and less than six months later they are almost sold out.
I'd like to keep them in print, and I'd like to use a better printer this time, one based in the U.S. who uses environmentally sustainable materials and union labor. I've found a printer I trust whose costs are reasonable, but I need the capital to invest in another printing. Being self-employed as an artist (and sometimes teacher and editor), I'm asking for help with the initial investment from more people who may want to own a deck in the future.
I've been very grateful to my immediate community for helping me finance the first printing, and grateful to everyone I've met through this project. With your help, I can keep the deck in print and offer it to more people who a need a little extra protection.
**Also, the funding goal I've set on Kickstarter is less than half the amount I really need for printing; I didn't want to risk not reaching the full goal, so I set it low in hopes of raising other funds elsewhere. So please keep pledging, your support is still vital!**
