Hi, I'm Yvonne Latty, the host and a producer of a new podcast, Mouthful. Mouthful gives teens a platform to share their perspectives on the important issues and big ideas that matter to them. Each week, I talk to a young person about a topic they have written about and shared on stages in the city of Philadelphia, then journey out into the community to talk to students, adults, experts: anyone who can broaden the conversation.
Producing Mouthful has been an amazing, powerful, moving, funny and educational process. So far we have produced six episodes, spanning topics from gender identity to community policing, diversity in private schools, eating disorders, and masculinity. We are working on two more episodes now, but we need to fundraise to be able to complete the final three episodes of our first season!
WHERE WE'VE BEEN
So far, the launch has been great. Reception of the podcast has been 100% positive, including feedback from adults and young people alike.
We truly believe this project has something for everyone. Parents have told us that they listen with their kids and then talk. Teachers have requested permission to use the podcasts in their classroom. Young people have shared that they hear themselves reflected in the podcast.
We are featured on the opinion pages of philly.com, have gotten great press in Philadelphia Magazine, The Philly Voice and other publications, and we feel like we are just getting to the good part, where more and more listeners are able to enjoy the podcast and to hear the vital perspectives of these young people.
WHAT MAKES MOUTHFUL SPECIAL?
Mouthful is about so many things. First and foremost, the podcast gives youth a platform to be heard. Second, it connects youth perspectives to the bigger picture: to the very real issues that affect them every day. Finally, the podcast highlights and amplifies the great work being done by community organizations and individuals in the City of Philadelphia and beyond.
So far, we've spoken to 30 individuals representing 17 different schools and organizations, including The Attic Youth Center, The Renfrew Center, the Philadelphia Youth Network, the Anderson Monarchs, the Upper Darby Police Department, and The Colored Girls Museum.
There is so much good work going on in our region and beyond, and there are so many resources available to young people and their caretakers for just about anything. Mouthful hopes to begin to make those connections through the individuals we interview and the organizations they represent.
Now we need a little help to get us to the finish line: we need to raise at least $2,500 to finish our 10 episode season. The funds would be used to support basic production costs. Our budget is a shoestring because we believe so much in the work.
No one has more at stake then our young people in a world that seems so uncertain. They deserve to be heard and we need to hear them. Mouthful gives them that platform, and creates a space for conversation well beyond the 20-some minutes of each episode. Please consider donating to help us produce the final episodes of our first ten episode season!
Risks and challenges
We are halfway through the production of our first season, and we've established a great rhythm and a streamlined process even with our lean, three-person team.
The only risk is running out of money to underwrite production costs!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
