What's going on
WE ARE NOW IN REHEARSAL FOR AN AMBITIOUS SEASON AND NEED YOUR HELP!
Anna Sokolow (1910-2000) is recognized as one of the most iconoclastic and original choreographers of modern dance. This December 3-7, the Sokolow Theatre/Dance Ensemble will present ANNA'S AMERICANA, a program featuring her tributes to artists who inspired her. PRELUDES (1984) will be danced to live music composed by George Gershwin, played by pianist Amir Khosrowpour; FRIDA (1997) is a multi-media tribute to Ms. Sokolow’s painter friend; and HOMAGE TO EDGAR ALLAN POE (1986/1993), performed to live music composed by Rachmaninoff, combines dance with Poe's poetry.
We will also honor the late Alan Danielson (dancer, choreographer, and former director of the Limón School) with ARE WE THERE, YET, the duet he created on Artistic Director Jim May and guest artist Clay Taliaferro, performed to live music composed by Satie.
Guest artist Sarah Ford will perform her award-winning GEORGIA & ME. Inspired by American painter Georgia O'Keefe, this autobiographical fantasy with music and dance explores the renewal of creative passion and rediscovery of a forgotten voice.
The concert will be presented in association with the Dance Series at The 14th Street Y in New York City.
The Sokolow Theatre/Dance Ensemble, under the artistic directorship of long-time Sokolow associate, Jim May, is dedicated to recreating works choreographed by Anna Sokolow, continuing her teachings, and furthering her artistic vision. Ms. Sokolow encouraged artistic growth and the Sokolow Ensemble continues this desire by offering its expertise and experience to new choreographers who are interested in multi-arts projects.
"Evidence of such purposeful homage by dancers to masters of their craft is hard to find in today's multi-faceted dance world, where commercial intentions predominate." Deborah Jowitt
What We Need
What you will see on stage is the final product of many hours of rehearsal, costume design, lighting and multimedia design, administrative work, and much, much more. With your donation, you become an essential part of our process by helping us cover these costs.
Your donation will support the following expenses:
- $5350+ Rent: Rehearsal space with piano, the theater, and related expenses
- $1000+ Costumes for 12 dancers in 4 dances
- $850+ Live music: Pianist, scores, tuning
- $3000+ Personnel: Lighting, sound, production, public relations, and more
- $5000+ Dancers' salaries….what?? Did you think they worked for free??? ;-)
- $4000+.....all the other stuff: insurance, royalties, travel, etc.
As you can see, our Kickstarter goal will cover only a portion of our costs. We need your help to surpass our goal in order to bring this ambitious program into reality.
