About this project

Capere means capture in Latin. Return to a time thousands of years ago to command your own Roman Legions.
Capere means capture in Latin. Return to a time thousands of years ago to command your own Roman Legions.

During the period of Rome's bloody civil wars, a divided army fought for control of one of the mightiest empires on earth. Take sides in a game that balances skill and chance. Anticipate and plot your next moves, as you scheme to infiltrate and plunder enemy territory. Ambush and capture your opponents, but beware! Roman gods may take sides and intercede to seal your fate.

Capere is a 2 or 4 person game. Its rules are simple and can be mastered in one game. Each game averages 15 to 20 minutes. The playing strategies are infinite.

Capere is designed and modeled after the classics. It is destined to endure and there are absolutely no other games like it.

Number cards determine the moves each player may make. Scattered among them are cards representing ancient Roman Gods. These gods may help or hinder a player's chance at winning.

Playing pieces are made from cut marble. The texture of raw stone gives a tactile dimension to the game.

Stone patterned dice provide an elegant way to keep score.

The handsome aesthetics of this game is one of understated sophistication.

This intuitive playing board is made from designs taken from ancient Roman artwork.

Included in the limited Deluxe Edition are hand crafted and hand cast resin figurines of Roman soldiers as playing pieces. These pieces will only be available through this Kickstarter campaign.

Hand sewn lined bags in the Deluxe edition will add to the plushness of your new game.

  • Capere is SO engaging and almost addictive because every time you play it's like a whole new challenge!!!! How are the cards going to fall? How can my strategy gain an advantage!? It's really great fun!!!! Lorrie Oshatz
  • The element of luck allows for beginners to win but the strategic possibilities keep skilled players engaged. The more I play. The more creative my strategies get. It makes me feel anciently wise.  Aunt Kath
  • A great game for the whole family. A well designed, well paced game with just the right combination of skill, strategy, and luck. It's deceptively simple and quickly learned. As you play more games you start to see all the possibilities. Skill and strategy are very important . . . but just when you thing you have your opponent trapped, Lady Luck can come along and put you in the corner,  Walter A.
  • It is so f**king frustrating - I swear to god! . . . It was totally worth it . . . It is totally, totally an awesome game. I give it five stars. It's epic. Gotham Press Podcast
  • At last month's Long Beach Comic Con Expo I came across a game that was so fun and easy to learn that I had to take it home with me. I'm a sucker for strategy games . . . Capere is a simple strategy game that anyone can learn. If I was able to learn it in just a few minutes at a comic convention, then anyone can learn it. The Geek Girl Project

When I taught middle school in South LA, I used games as learning tools. Sometimes I would create games to suit my needs. Sometimes I allowed students to create their own games. I also ran an after-school chess club. Most of my members had to be taught how to play. Then, I would let them pit their skills against each other. At the end of each year we held a tournament. One day, at a bus stop, I met a young man. He had long since graduated from high school, but he he told me that he remembered my chess club. Then I recognized him. He had been one of my worst players, but he persisted, gradually improving. In his last tournament he won a trophy.  We spoke a while. When his bus came, we said our goodbyes. His last words to me were, "I still play chess, all the time."

After retiring, I had time to pursue my passions. I wanted to make a new kind of game. One that would balance strategy against elements of chance and unpredictability. After crafting a rough set of rules, making a deck of hand drawn cards and molding playing pieces from clay, I invited friends and anyone else around to play with me. For six months I played nearly every day, slowly refining Capere's rules into the perfect balance between chance and skill. I put the game together myself and began marketing it at Cons around Southern California. Hundreds of gamers have stopped by my booth to try a game. Now, the upgraded edition of Capere will offer an even more intense and thrilling experience to those who play it. I have no doubts that if you try Capere, you'll like it.

Always a potentially complicated affair. We decided to simplify matters.

Risks and challenges

All projects have some level of risk, and ours is no different. I am fortunate to be partnering with Playford Games to co-publish Capere and have been working with them in preparing the game for production in the same factory in Germany that printed Playford’s Moral Conflict series. They also have experience in coordinating shipping for other Kickstarter project from the US, China and Europe. While I don't anticipate any problems, sometimes difficulties in making custom pieces, delays due to freight or customs are unavoidable. I will be sending updates on our campaign's progress. And if anything occurs that might affect the project’s delivery – either with the pledge rewards or timeliness, I will provide a comprehensive explanation of the problem and resolution.
