We, Martina, Raphaela, Karin and Sigrid, are a team of four women trying to make the book project Close Calls by Kurvenkratzer a reality.
After Martina’s own experiences with breast cancer she came up with the idea to create a book for and about people affected by this illness. Quickly she found herself surrounded by three women - her sister Raphaela, her aunt Karin and her long-time friend Sigrid - all more than eager to be a part of what then became the book project Close Calls by Kurvenkratzer.
"My name is Martina. I was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2010 at the age of 32. My own experience with this disease made me want to publish a book about this illness and share it with other people affected by breast cancer.
Why, you may wonder? I had help from family, friends; all the people around me. But somehow people overlooked the fact that Tom, the man at my side supporting me, was really challenged dealing with all of it. He would have also needed some help and support at the time. This is not a rare occurrence and not limited to breast cancer, but a common phenomenon in relatives of people diagnosed with a severe illness."
Today, post-therapy, I would love to give patients and people, who had or will have their lives touched by breast cancer, something I would have needed myself. That is why the four of us have decided to start the ambitious book project Close Calls by Kurvenkratzer.
Our plan is to produce a 23cm by 28cm (11” by 9”), bilingual, hardcover coffee table book, beautifully designed, written and arranged, printed on high quality paper, filled with moving stories and inspiring photographs of people dealing with breast cancer.
Close Calls by Kurvenkratzer (English version) or Kurvenkratzer (German version) is a collection of stories about breast cancer. 25 people and their loved ones talk about the emotional impact of their breast cancer diagnosis and the subsequent treatments in an honest, sometimes blunt and very comprehensible fashion. The topics discussed range from everyday challenges and treatments to fears, expectations and hopes to life changing realizations.
Close Calls by Kurvenkratzer‘s main message is "With cancer there is no such thing as ‘the one and only way to cope’". Instead of trying to squeeze all possibilities into one single, correct answer, it illustrates a multitude of possibilities.
Our book is meant to be informative and inspiring. It is meant to break taboos. It is meant to create awareness and force people to actively think about cancer.
Together with 25 talented and renowned photographers we plan to highlight the individuality of every chapter by having each of the 25 participants portrayed by a different photographer in her or his individual style.
Lupi Spuma (http://lupispuma.com/), Raoul Lechner (http://www.captured.at/), Christian Jungwirth (http://www.christianjungwirth.com/), Kristian Schuller (www.kristianschuller.com), Erich Lessing (www.lessing-photo.com), Billy & Hells (www.billyundhells.de), Greg Gorman (www.gormanphotography.com), Horst Stasny (www.stasny.at), Véronique Vial (www.veroniquevial.com) and Christophe Gilbert (www.christophegilbert.com) are just a few of the talented photographers we have on board.
Our goal of $73,200 CAD includes:
- Printing costs for 1,000 bilingual Close Calls by Kurvenkratzer
- Production costs for photography, design and layout
- Costs of writer / editor
And with your help we hope to achieve much more than that!
For our stretch goals we wish to print 2,000 copies of our book (1,000 in German & 1,000 in English – so no more bilingual) and produce an e-book version as well!

That is what we plan to do. Close Calls by Kurvenkratzer will be our first coffee table book. Although combined we have a lot of experience in project planning and management, product launching, business-to-business and business-to-consumer marketplaces, consulting and coaching and professional photography, we have to remember that this is our very first publication in this magnitude.
The concept is crystal clear, we understand the subject, we know the strengths and core message of our book. We know most of our protagonists and their stories and have the commitment of many accomplished photographers to support our project with their amazing talent and determination.
25 stories, 25 different people, 25 texts, 25 photographers. This requires a huge amount of time commitment on all contributors involved. And since it is our first coffee-table book, we can only estimate the time necessary very carefully and cautiously, but we are positive that we have planned in enough of a buffer to finish our book on schedule.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
