LA LA Bakies is a Los Angeles based bakery specializing in delicious, vegan, healthy and common allergen-free baked goods. You will not find any gluten, soy, yeast, or nuts (aside from coconut) in any of our recipes. Our baked goods are made from a variety of flours that contain all of the essential amino acids, meaning they are a complete protein source! When our treats are sweetened we use raw agave, palm sugar, and/or stevia. We don’t use any starch or added fillers, making Bakies ideal for diabetics or anyone wanting to watch their blood sugar levels. We buy local and organic when available and because we support small farming and avoid allergens, we use recycled packaging rather then the more popular biodegradable corn or soy products. We believe that food should be safe and pure as well as tasty and satisfying!
GET TO KNOW MICHELLE...
WHAT'S IN A BAKIE?
A Bakie is made from only the finest and freshest quality ingredients. Quinoa, sorghum, and millet flours make the base. Then we add flaxseed meal and guar gum to hold it together, palm sugar to sweeten things up, apple cider vinegar and baking soda to alkalize and rise! Then comes all of the special personal touches to each flavor.
The brownies get deep organic raw cacao...
The Double Chocolate gets thick and sticky agave..
The Mexican Hot Chocolate gets the exotic and anti-inflammatory properties of turmeric, cinnamon, clove and a kick of cayenne!
The Carrot Cake Bakies are made with fresh local carrots, cinnamon and nutmeg.
The pumpkin has real baked pumpkin straight from the farm and a light floral blend of holiday spices.
What's not in a Bakie:
- NO GLUTEN
- NO SOY
- NO YEAST
- NO GMO'S
- NO DAIRY OR ANIMAL PRODUCTS OF ANY KIND
- NO ARTIFICIAL ADDITIVES OR FILLERS
- NO YUCKY STUFF
Are Bakies for everyone, even non-vegans and people without allergies?
Yes! Bakies are so good, even skeptics love them. In a nutshell, the reason why there seems be be an epidemic of allergies has a lot to do with agriculture and processed foods. Back in the day, we ate with the season, because that's all that was available. Nowadays we get the same few ingredients in most of our food sources; Gluten, soy and corn. Even if you don't have any allergies it can be a good thing to take a break from these crops as it will help restore balance to your body and our planet!
Kickstarting LA LA Bakies...
While everyone is calling and asking for bakies, we just don't have the funds to kick things into high gear. After all, LA LA Bakies was just a humble home experiment that caught on! With the funds raised from kickstarter I'll be able to get a delivery vehicle (I literally rely on the bus and rides from Maneesh and friends to get to demos and the farmers markets!) and whatever money is left over will go to getting nutrition facts on our labels and getting certified gluten-free, organic, vegan and/or non-GMO. The money we raise through kickstarter will go to the following
1.) LA LA Bakies delivery vehicle
2.) Nutrition Facts
3.) Certifications (vegan, kosher, gluten-free, non-GMO, organic)
We need to raise at least $5000 to make the first two things on the list happen. If I don't get a car, there is just no way I can meet the demands of my business. After all, this is Los Angeles! With Mother earth at the forefront of my mind and business model, I will be searching for a lightly used bio-diesel or hybrid vehicle, nothing else will suffice. What is leftover (1-2k) will go toward nutriton facts and new labels.
Any money raised above $5000 will go towards getting into an allergy free kitchen so we can get certified. Which is why our secondary goal is $12,000.
As it is we had to scale down to just one store and one farmers market because we just couldn't meet the demands. Our demand is so high in fact that we get calls weekly about getting into new stores! The only thing missing is the capital to take things to the next level. That's where you come in! In exchange for your generous donations, we are offering some pretty amazing rewards in return!
We are exceptionally ambitious people so we plan to have all of the rewards sent out before new years. We'll also offer pick up at the farmers market for our local donors. If your reward is meant to be a holiday gift, we'll be happy to send your gift-ee an official LA LA Bakies email alerting them they are about to recieve some yummy treats in the mail!
If you can't spare some dough (pun intended!) no worries, you can still help out tremendously by sharing this campaign on your facebook, blog, twitter, email or however it is you like to send and share information! :oD
Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
Getting a delivery vehicle that is reliable, used and eco-friendly might be quite a task. Luckily my brother is an expert in all things car sales and he promised to help me out (in exchange for Bakies of course!). With his knowledge and expertise we hope that finding the perfect vehicle for LA LA Bakies will be a breeze. If you guys have any tips or advice, we would love to hear them!
* Side note, this is my severely diabetic brother Danny who taste tests bakies and then checks his blood sugar levels. This is how we were sure they were ok for him to eat!
The other challenge will be getting the nutrition facts for all of our products. Rather than sending in our recipe to be calculated, we would prefer to send in our actual products to be tested and analyzed. While this process is known to be more precise, it is more expensive and time consuming. We feel it’s worth it for you guys to be able to see the quality you are getting!
With this challenge will come a proper shelf life analysis... which has me a little worried. Although from my professional experience with food (over 8 years) and home tests we feel strongly that we have about two weeks. Worst case scenario, Bakies are sold frozen in retail spaces or I adjust the recipes (not the integrity). We are flexible.
Finally our biggest challenge; Getting certified can be hard unless you can find or share a kitchen that is already certified. Like most small food startups, we are currently in a shared incubator kitchen. Every single one of our ingredients are certified Organic and Kosher, plus we are a 100% vegan company. We know of one incubator kitchen in the area that has some of these certifications but it's much more than what we are paying for our current space. The only way it would work is if we had enough to cover two months rent and launched our line of Bakies into every indie health food store in southern california... but that's the plan! It takes about six weeks for your first check to come in from each establishment, which is why we need to be able to cover a couple of months before we take the leap. Even if we can't get into the kitchen of our dreams and get certified right away, it will not be the end for us. We'll just keep pushing until we do!
Fortunately, we have a wonderful network of friends in the business of healthy vegan food. If we happen to hit any hurdles along the way, we have plenty of people to call for advice. You know who you are, we love you!
