Crema.co is an online marketplace for single-origin coffee. It's a place where people like you can buy freshly-roasted coffee directly from specialty roasters. Simply put, Crema.co is reinventing the way people discover, buy, and enjoy coffee.
Back this project, and you'll be helping build the coffee marketplace of the future!
- One marketplace, many roasters. Discover and buy coffee, easily.
- A coffee subscription with a twist. The "Brewlist" is like a Netflix queue for coffee.
- Single origin. Enjoy coffee from a specific place, with a distinctive flavor.
- Coffee, made personal. Get to know the coffee grower and his or her story.

One Marketplace, Many Roasters
We're building the world's largest marketplace of single-origin coffee. In doing so, we're making it easier than ever before to discover new roasters, and buy new coffees from them.
In the same way that your local farmers market hosts many individual vendors, Crema.co's marketplace features many different coffee roasters, each offering their own coffees for sale.
When you buy a bag of coffee on Crema.co, we notify the roaster. Once receiving your order, most roasters will only then roast your coffee, and ship it out on the same day. This means you're receiving only the freshest coffee — no going stale on the supermarket shelf.
Each roaster commits to a certain freshness guarantee which is clearly communicated, so you'll know exactly what to expect for each coffee.
A Coffee Subscription with a Twist
Crema.co offers a coffee subscription service with a twist. It's called: the Brewlist, and it's a bit like a Netflix queue for coffee. Here's how it works:
- Add multiple coffees to your Brewlist.
- Set a shipment frequency.
- Get the next coffee on your list each delivery.
The Brewlist makes it easy to try different coffees from one or more roasters, and we believe it's the future of ordering coffee online.
Other coffee subscriptions either make you subscribe to the same coffee over and over again, which can get monotonous, or they "curate" for you — which is just another way of saying that you're locked in and don't have a choice. The Brewlist, however, gives you both the flexibility to try different coffees and full control over what you receive. It's the best of both worlds.
Roasted coffee can be divided into two categories: single-origin and blends. As the name suggest, single-origin coffee comes from a particular place, often as specific as one single farm. As with fine wine, coffee's terroir — the location, climate, soil conditions, etc. associated with a particular place — give each single-origin coffee a distinctive taste profile.
Coffee blends, on the other hand, are not from one specific place. Instead, the roaster aggregates coffee from all over the world and mixes it together, losing much of the distinctive taste of the underlying coffee, and relying more on the roasting process itself to derive flavor.
Crema.co is all about helping you discover the world of single-origin coffee: coffee from a particular place, with a distinctive taste, and with a story to tell.
Coffee, Made Personal
Do you know the story of the farmer who planted and nurtured the plant that produced the coffee you're sipping?
We want to make coffee more personal by connecting coffee drinkers with the people who roasted and grew their coffee. Coffee growers have often been marginalized in the past; but we are focused on telling their stories through text, images, videos, and interactive maps. And, in the future, we even hope to facilitate direct communication between you, the coffee drinker, and the person who grew your morning brew.
By partnering with roasters who have direct relationships with growers, pay them better-than-fair-trade prices for their coffee beans, and help tell their stories, we want to empower growers to pursue their passion — growing great coffee — from a sustainable state of well-being and respect.
As told by Tyler Tate, Crema.co's founder.
The year was 2006. It was the summer between my junior and senior year of college, and I was spending four weeks working with an NGO group in Costa Rica. The group's goal: to promote the country's coffee trade, help local farmers earn higher incomes, and provide better access to medical care for migrant agricultural workers. I visited a dozen coffee farms, got to know many coffee growers, and witnessed the processing, milling, and roasting operations along the way.
Among the most memorable of my experiences that summer was visiting Arturo Segura's magnificent finca, towering some 1,700 meters over the nearby town of Santa Maria in Costa Rica's renowned Tarrazu region. The farm teemed with life everywhere we looked. For Arturo, coffee farming was an art more than a science. For years he had shunned the use of fertilizers and pesticides and embraced organic methods. Birds sung all around us — Arturo's coffee was shade-grown and accredited bird-friendly by the Smithsonian institute. He explained to me as we walked through his fields:
"People enter into an organic type of farming from the social and ecological and spiritual perspective before they go for the economics. They really come from a place of honoring the soil, people, nature, and their families."
I'll never forget that experience; it whet my appetite for this elixir of life that we call coffee, and it emboldened me to try to amplify the amazing stories of people like Arturo.
Fast forward eight years. I was then living in the United Kingdom and working at a tech startup that I'd cofounded. One morning I was sitting in a favorite London coffee shop — Flat White on Berwick street — and looking at the blackboard behind the counter. It was describing their featured coffee: "El Salvador, Finca Divino Niño. Grown at 2,100 meters elevation by Mateo Pérez. Bourbon varietal. Harvested in May. Dry processed." (I can't remember the exact details, but you get the picture.)
It was at that moment that I first pined for a marketplace for craft coffee. My thought process went something along the lines of:
"Wouldn't it be great if there was an online marketplace where I could explore the world of coffee using all of coffee's unique characteristics? Where I could discover the story behind the coffee I'm drinking? Where I could buy coffee from small, specialty roasters and have it delivered to me?"
Since that inception, the vision for Crema.co has grown and matured. It has evolved as I've talked with coffee drinkers, roasters, and growers alike. It's been shaped by friends and mentors. But ultimately, whether that vision is fully realized comes down to one person: you.
I invite you to join with me. To be part of Crema.co's story. Together, we can do this!
We are thrilled that you want to join us in building the coffee marketplace of the future. In addition to your choice of coffee from some of the best roasters out there, we've got some great perks with your name on them (literally).
We've just added our most exclusive reward to date: a precision machined, 1lbs 1oz, Crema.co tamper, engraved with your name on it. The handle is machined from solid aluminum, anodized with a silky matte finish, and attached to a base of stainless steel, resulting in a well-balanced feel in your hand. We're giving this reward as a special thank you to our backers pledging $500 or more.
All of our backers pledging $10 or more will receive one of our handsome Crema.co coffee mugs. We've selected them to be just the right size: not too big, not too small. Good coffee really should be enjoyed in a good mug.
All of our backers will also receive a couple of two-inch stickers made out of durable vinyl. (Perfect for sticking on your MacBook.)
Check out our demo video to get a feel for what it's like to discover coffees on Crema.co.
Let's Make This Happen
We believe people are tired of mediocre coffee. We believe people want coffee that was artfully roasted just a few days before. And we believe people want coffee from a single farm with it's own, one-of-a-kind taste.
If that's you, please back this project. We need to know that there are other people out their who share our belief and passion for exceptional coffee. If we join together, we can truly transform the way that we're all able to discover, buy, and enjoy coffee. THANK YOU for partnering with us.
If you are a coffee roaster and purvey exceptional coffee, let's get to know one another — we want to help you sell more coffee. Check out the Roaster Inquiry page on our website for more info.
And finally: WE'RE HIRING. If you are a talented developer, designer, marketer, or community manager who loves coffee, give Tyler a shout!
Risks and challenges
Right now, we're busy building the coffee marketplace of the future. We're hoping to launch Crema.co in the United States this summer, and our sights are set on Canada, the United Kingdom, Europe, and beyond as we expand in the future. As with any startup, predicting exactly when everything will be ready is an imprecise science, so there's always a chance it could be a bit earlier or a bit later than we estimate. But whatever the case, we'll definitely keep you, our backers, in the loop each step of the way.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
