Hi my name is Anna Ósk Erlingsdóttir and I'm an Icelandic photographer living in Gothenburg Sweden. I have lived here since 2010 and I lived here between 2002 to 2006 when I decided to go to Australia and study photography for 2 years.
The book Enigma has been a project which I have been wanting to do for the last 4 years. The book is about women, lost women, desperate women, melancholy women, content women but most of all it is about strong women. I come from a long line of strong women and from a country full of very independent women. I am very proud of my heritage and where I come from. Iceland is a small but powerful island and full of natural forces and mystery. I have photographed these images over 10 year period and they are photographed in places like Iceland, Italy, Sweden, Denmark, Malta, Serbia and Australia.
Since I was a child I've always had very vivid imagination. I am very visual and I like to say that I see the world in various colors. People ask me frequently if I think it is because I am from Iceland that I get these odd ideas for photoshoots and I am sure it is partly because of that but the other part I cannot really explain. I get influenced by so many things, colors, scent, films and new places. My workflow is very spontanious, I don't like to plan too much. I feel that if you plan too much you loose that magical feeling you need to have to make something spectacular.
The technical part of photography has never been my main interest, the natural light however, has always interested me. For each country I lived in I realise how different the light is and the fact that it is all about the light and the person infront of you, the connection you have with your model and the team that helps you get the final result. I am very blessed to have good people around me that have made this dream of mine come true.
When I got the idea of making this book I had not yet met my partner. It was when I met Oscar that I decided that now was the time!!
Oscar has been writing poetry for many many years and I came up with the idea that he would make poems to my images. Since he is Swedish and not use to writing poetry in any other language we decided to keep the poems in Swedish for this book, even though I know that I will be selling this book internationally. To me it is an extra bonus to my images, I realise that not everyone is going to understand the words but I do not think that is going to spoil the experience of the book!
During my stay in Australia one of my images was picked out to be exhibited at the National Portrait gallery in Canberra. That image is in the book. The story behind the image is quite unusual I had sold the image to a buyer on the Sunshine Coast Queensland and when the exhibition had finished I had asked a friend in Canberra to ship it to Queensland for me, the image never made it to the owner, the postal plane that it was flown with crashed outside of Sydney and it was never found, sadly the pilot and my image from the National Portrait gallery are now floating on the bottom of the ocean somewhere. A lot of the images from the book have been previously published in some way or another and have been exhibited in places like International Festival of Photography in Cannes, Malta Fashion week, Reykjavik Museum of Photography and National Portrait gallery in Australia.
The book Enigma is going to be about 150 pages 65 images and 65 poems. The front cover will feature one of my images and will be in white canvas and with embossed lettering.
The cost of printing 500 exemplar of the book will be 85.000 swedish kr (10.000 US dollars). And since my plan is to both publish this book and have an exhibition next fall my goal for this kickstarter campaign is to hopefully raise 110.000 swedish kr (13.000 US dollars).
Risks and challenges
The risks are minimal. I have already gotten a publishing company, WATERGLOBE PRODUCTIONS, that is going to take care of all the distribution and introduction to retailers etc.
In cooperation with Waterglobe production we have chosen a printing company that has been in business since 1959 called Bulls Graphics.
Of course for every book printed there is always a risk that coloring or something else might not be as you had anticipated but by choosing highly recommended company I am sure that the end product will be satisfactory.
Enigma will be sold in limited quantities through this Kickstarter campaign. This is an Early Bird offering to everyone at Kickstarter first. And to be clear, this is a limited edition First Edition.
We’d also like to mention that the entire publishing budget for this special edition will cost me more than I am asking for in this campaign, I am hoping that you will help me achieve my full publishing budget so that I can bring you the finest production of this book possible. And the lovely thing about any Kickstarter campaign is that working together with all of you makes this entire project special and exclusive.
