About

So heres the plan...

We want to build a recording studio so that we can offer a facility for all musicians and artist, no matter what genre, skill level, or age, at an affordable rate. By doing this we feel that we can help struggling musicians get their career started, as well as give kids the opportunity to transform their hard work into something tangible. We want to be able to record our own personal music, as well as provide a facility where teachers can teach private lessons to kids without having to worry about ridiculous rent fees. Since our company is comprised of a school band director, an audio engineer, a local music store clerk, a singer/songwriter, and a private instructor, we also want to be able to develop, and provide mentorship to all who seek our services.

Heres where YOU come in!!!!!

We have crunched the numbers, and we believe that if we can raise at least 17,000 dollars, that will take us to the next step, securing a location (the money will be used for construction, not rent) and purchasing the rest of our studio gear (i.e. Computer, Speakers, etc.). We hope to secure a location and purchase the gear by the end of September, with a fully functional studio up and running by the end of December. If you believe in our goal, please back our Kickstarter. Even if it is as little as a single dollar, every dollar counts. As a reward, if you choose to back our Kickstarrer, no matter the amount, we will give you a high quality digital copy of any album of choice from our catalog of music. Thats right, an entire album. Even if you HATE MUSIC WITH A PASSION (which we're sure you don't), who can turn down a full album for as little as a single dollar!!!! The more you pledge, the more music you get.

Our goal is  $17,000, but lets not stop there. The more backers we get, the better facility we can build!!!

For a full break down of the equipment we need, please check the "Risk and Challenges" Section.

Here is a quick look at our catalog of music, all of which are currently signed artist, or artist we have worked with gratis.

After graduating from Morris Brown College, Adrien moved to Miami, Florida to further his musical growth and career, where he still resides today. His raw talent may go unnoticed to the untrained eye or ear, but a closer look at Adrien's song credits reveals that not only does he write his songs, but he also plays a majority of the instruments on every record. Referring to his music as unique would be an understatement, as it blends musical styles from all generations together. From Classical and Jazz, to Pop and Urban, Adrien's music hip and versatile, and is accessible to a wide range of musical taste.

Heres some background info on our company

Once upon a time, there were 5 attractive, talented, charming, but broke musicians. They all came from different walks of life and they all had their own unique style, but they all spoke the only universal language, MUSIC!!!! All 5 dedicated their lives to music, studying it in grade school, and eventually taking it to the next level by pursuing degrees in college. Those smooth young men eventually started a record label, and named it PentHouse Media. Those 5 guys are us!!!!

A little more background info you say?

PentHouse Media was formed by 5 brothers of the Rho Eta Chapter of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Music Fraternity of America, the oldest and largest mens music fraternity in the world. Some notable musicians who are/were also brothers in Phi Mu Alpha are jazz greats Duke Ellington and Count Basie, American composer Frank Ticheli, the late great opera singer Pavarotti, and even modern day artists like Ruben Studdard. We originally formed this company because of the lack of opportunity for ourselves in the music industry, wether it be because of expensive studio time, or not knowing the right people, but we realized soon after forming, this business was much bigger than just us. Our peers began approaching us, wanting to record their own albums, wanting to embark on their own musical journeys, and wanting our help as well. We realized the only real stable job for a musician out school would be to teach, and with music programs in American schools being cut, becoming a teacher has become even more difficult. We formed PentHouse Media to record, promote and sell our own music. Instead of searching for a record label that would sign us,

WE SIGNED OURSELVES!!!

Which brings us to today...

After years of gigging, purchasing equipment, recording in houses, bedrooms, bathrooms(yes bathrooms), schools, and any other place we didn't  get kicked out of, we were able to finally finish a few of our projects. Sunday Quorum's debut album "Side A", Adrien Neal's debut album  "OMBS", and Gush Mob's self titled debut album. With 2 more albums half way done, and 3 more albums waiting to get started (all of which are being done FOR FREE), the only way we can take our craft to the next level and finish our projects is to build a reliable recording studio. But why stop there? The objects of Phi Mu Alpha is to advance music in America. and if building a studio could create a better opportunity for ourselves, why can't it create an opportunity for everyone else we have helped?

For a full break down of the equipment we need, please check the "Risk and Challenges" Section.

THANKS FOR YOUR TIME!!!!

Risks and challenges

So what are some risks and challenges we face with this project? Well for starters, if we are successful, how do we determine whats a reasonable price to charge people. well we have a working studio engineer on staff that has worked in professional recording studio with artist of all calibers, from local to billboard top 40, and he can offer us insight on competitive rates. For examples, a standard room at a decent studio can easily cost $500-$700 dollars for a 12 hour session, and thats if you bring your own engineer. With a decent engineer who knows how to use all the equipment, the total goes up AT LEAST an extra $300-$400.

So far, your total has gone up to $1100 for 1 session!!!!! (and this doesn't even include gear rental!!!)

We believe we can subsidize these cost by providing bundle deals, which can include the room, the engineer, the equipment, and even studio musicians. Where do we find these people you ask, from our network of musicians of course. Being a part a music fraternity like Phi Mu Alpha definitely has its perks. By taking advantage of our network of local, college, and fraternity musicians, we can provide a source of income for them, as well as an affordable recording studio.

Another challenge that we face is finding a great location, at a great price. With our goal being a minimum of $17,000, at this point in time, buying a location is not the best option for us, but with rent being split between the 5 owners,we should not have a hard time securing a location. THE MONEY GENERATED BY THIS KICKSTARTER WILL ONLY BE USED TO BUILD AND PURCHASE GEAR, NOT FOR RENT. As far as location, We have decided that an area close to our local university (Florida International University) would be the most ideal, as it is a natural central hub for the young adults who we believe could benefit most from our services.

As far as equipment goes, we have compiled a list of things that our studio must be able to do, and that in turn allowed us to accurately determine what kind of gear we need.

Heres what we want to be able to do with our studio

-Record Vocals
-Record a Full Drum set and one other amped or vocal instrument simultaneously
-At least 8 channels of Simultaneous Mic signal recording
-Record at least 1 Guitar/Bass Amp
-Be able to facilitate an creative inspiring environment for musical production/writing

With that in mind, heres a breakdown of the average pricefor the actual gear

Recording Computer - $2800
Computer Monitor - $200
DAW Recording Software (Pro Tools) - $699
Audio Interface(24 Channels) - $3500
Master Section - $600
Summing Mixer - $1300
Studio Monitors (Speakers) - $2000
Patch Bay - $330
Power Regulator - $230
Cables, Connectors, & Wall Mounts - $1000

Grand Total: ~$12,700

Now you may be wondering, why do we need $17,000 when the gear only cost $12,700. Well there are a few reasons.

1. The prices listed are quite conservative and do not take into account taxes. For example, the industry standard audio interfaces are the Avid HD Interfaces, which start at around $7000, and can easily run higher. We have tried to choose the most efficient gear and the best price point. If we generate more money, we can get better gear.

2. We have not listed acoustic treatment because we don't have a concrete location yet. Acoustic treatment is used so that the studio has an great and accurate sound. Without treatment a studio is nothing more than a glorified bedroom, and without a concrete location we cannot determine how much treatment is needed. But for some prespective, a 4x30' foot sheet of vinyl for Auralex cost around $424.00.

3. Unfortunately, the location we do get will most likely not be studio ready and will need a little elbow grease. Because of our recording needs, we need at least 3 isolated rooms, which means materials like drywall, insulation, decouplers, and a ton a nails. We cannot accurately determine the total price of the building materials until we secure a location, which is why we set our goal at $17,000, as we feel this is a good starting point.
