Support Asian American Theatre in San Diego, by seeding this production of the Obie Award winning play by David Henry Hwang!
Support Asian American Theater!
My name is Andy, and I'm an event and theatrical director/producer based in San Diego with about 18 years of experience and a history of almost 50 productions behind me.
Years ago I founded the San Diego Asian American Repertory Theater, and have since then dabbled in many other projects such as Joss Whedon's Dr. Horrible's Sing Along Blog-LIVE!
Having seen a lot of talent, but not a lot of projects for Asian American Artists in San Diego, I've decided to come back to my roots and produce a small, "no frills" production of David Henry Hwang's GOLDEN CHILD this coming February 2012, and I ask you to CONTRIBUTE TO SEED THIS NEXT PROJECT.
Seed a Guerilla Theater Production!
So here's my plan... Its the same conditions that I started my career 18 years ago producing guerrilla theater back in the mid 90's; a small 50 seat venue, some talented performers, and strong writing (by Tony Award winning playwright David Henry Hwang, writer of Yellow-Face, M. Butterfly, and Chinglish; now playing on Broadway)
The play, GOLDEN CHILD is a smart, funny and thought-provoking exploration of family life that takes a fascinating and uncommon look at East/West cultural clash.
Whats the Play?
GOLDEN CHILD by David Henry Hwang
A patriarch returns to his traditional Chinese polygamist home, bringing his new found western ideologies he has adopted while away on business. Though these Christian values clash with the Confucian Order that governs his household, they would allow Eng Tieng-Bin to follow his heart, turning his beloved "Third Wife" into his ONLY wife.
His traditionalist 1st wife, power hungry 2nd wife, idealistic 3rd wife, and prized eldest daughter, the "Golden Child", must struggle to either maintain the existing power structure, or adapt to a very quickly changing world. In the end, all will question the price paid for the politics of "conversion."
Why This Play
Focusing on a traditional Confucian household during the turn of the century China, the GOLDEN CHILD addresses topics such as polygamy, foot-binding, and contrasts differences in classic Chinese culture with western religious beliefs. Featuring some wonderfully complex, strong female characters, there are four great roles to feature local Asian American Actresses. Its a powerful and witty script that I've had in the back of my head since my AART days, and fits San Diego's APIA talent pool quite well! And being a bit of a self taught expert on the writing of David Henry Hwang (having performed and directed in multiple productions of FOB, and producing 2004's M. Butterfly, coming back to his writing is always a pleasure, particularly now that he's back on Broadway with his hit production of CHINGLISH.
How Can I Help?
With just $2000, I will have the start up money to pay the royalty fees, and rent a performance venue in Downtown San Diego's 10th Avenue Theater... of course after that there's another $8-10K to cover paying actors, designers, building costumes, sets, lighting, and marketing... so if you'd like to contribute more, we could certainly use the resources, as well as contacts to spread the word! But just $2000 is enough to get me started!
SO, Please support Asian Americans in the arts! and wish me a happy birthday by getting this project off the ground!
