About this project
I Like to Paint Monsters: 2012 - 2014
Much has happened since the 2012 "I Like to Paint Monsters" (ILTPM) Kickstarter. I purchased all of the equipment to begin the production process, traveled to Los Angeles three times, Albuquerque twice and Colorado once, interviewed most of Chet Zar's family members, close friends and colleagues, compiled over 100 hours of footage and produced the documentary trailer (watch below).
During this process Chet also initiated and successfully funded his own Kickstarter, Ego Death, which resulted in the most extravagant and grandiose show of his career. Since Ego Death was occurring in tandem with ILTPM, the documentary has taken on a whole new dimension. As a documentary filmmaker I couldn’t be happier! What a fortuitous opportunity to collect amazing footage as it unfolds!
As a consequence of these developments it has become apparent that I need to focus exclusively on ILTPM. The daunting task of distilling 100 hours of footage into a feature length documentary lies ahead. This will entail video editing, color correction, after effects and scoring, to name a few things. On the current track I will be able to create a great documentary, but it will take quite some time to complete this post production process, and the finances associated with taking ILTPM on the film festival circuit will be scarce. On the other hand, to take it up a notch and create an extraordinary documentary, with an expedited post production timeline, I will need your assistance! Your assistance will ensure that the completed documentary will make many submission deadlines for the 2014 film festival circuit, as well as Sundance 2015!
One of the most important things that I’ve learned about Chet throughout this process is that he lives his life by a code, and possesses an altruistic philosophy. He holds tight to the Joseph Campbell notion best summarized in this quote, “Follow your bliss and don't be afraid, and doors will open where you didn't know they were going to be.” Chet has personally tested this theory numerous times by successfully taking impossible leaps of faith. With your help I intend to take another crowdfunded leap of faith!
What do you Get?
We have decided to offer rewards that are mostly Kickstarter exclusive, in editions limited to the number of Backers per tier. These rewards are both valuable and highly collectable to Zarmy members (I fondly refer to the friends, family, fans and colleagues of Chet as the "Zarmy", and it is certain that ILTPM would be nothing without the ongoing support of the Zarmy). Every reward will be signed by Chet and I, so long as it has a surface that will hold a signature!
We are offering stickers, Zarmy Patches, "Crew" Hoodies and "Crew" Shirts for Backers who qualify for "Crew" status (Hoodies and Patches handcrafted by Filmmaker Mike Correll on a screen-press in his studio). You will have a chance to collect signed Master HDV cassette boxes that were used during ILTPM production. Chet will be sculpting a new custom frame, a classic "gas mask" icon magnet, a classic gas mask icon sterling pendant, a new monster bust and a "Lummox" wall hanging sculpt (4.75"x3.25"x5"). He will also be creating a very special documentary painting (follow link to see a similar style painting: http://www.chetzar.com/2010-zumanity.html), which will not only be offered on postcards, posters and shirts, but will also be featured as a custom framed 5x7 sketch, custom framed 5x7 oil study and full size 24x30 painting (process pics to come)! This featured item along with nine other studies and sketches will be filmed by Chet, and may be featured in the Documentary; here's your chance to own a little piece of ILTPM!
What it's really about
Although it’s nice to get something to put on your wall or on your shelf, I believe that most people who support this project will be doing so for the satisfaction of knowing that they helped breathe life into the documentary, and because they love Chet’s work and want to support him! Please understand that although the budget has been set, this is the absolute minimum amount of money that it will take to achieve the basic goals – any amount above and beyond this will guarantee that the documentary becomes what it is truly destined to be!
So please take a moment to peruse the reward gallery, watch the videos, enjoy the pictures, and ponder your involvement in a documentary about a guy who likes to paint monsters!
VIP Platinum Tier comes with the following items:
Custom framed, 24x36" Chet Zar Oil Painting, Bronze "Dead Pope" Sculpture (approx. 16" tall), Documentary "Crew" Hoodie & Shirt, Zarmy Patch, Gas Mask Magnet, Sketched Documentary Postcard and Executive Producer Documentary Credit. In addition there will be a "Meet and Greet" with Chet Zar. He will take you on a tour of his studio and out to lunch at his favorite pizza joint, Zelo! Don't miss this once in a lifetime opportunity!
This one of a kind, wooden and rubber ILTPM stamp was featured in the closing title sequence of the official documentary trailer. It has also been used to stamp every sticker, poster, postcard and shipping box for the ILTPM campaign. Here's your chance to own the one and only, signed ILTPM documentary stamp!
This one of a kind Production Clapboard was used for the duration of ILTPM production, and still bears the final production notes from an interview with Chet Zar on Halloween 2013. The production notes will be overwritten with sharpie in order to immortalize them, and the back will be signed by both Chet Zar and Mike Correll. In addition, Chet will be doing a 5x7" sharpie sketch on the reverse side. This reward also comes with a Signed Master HDV Cassette Box from ILTPM Production, with notes matching clapboard content!
This one of a kind, wooden framed ILTPM Silkscreen was used to print every "Classic" series hoodie and t-shirt for the ILTPM campaign. Signed by Chet Zar and Mike Correll, and lacquered with a clear sealant to preserve the image, this screen renders the "Classic" series a limited edition press. Here's your chance to own the one and only, signed, documentary "Classic" series screen!
"Cthulhu" is nearly complete, and we are offering at as a 13x19", Kickstarter exclusive, limited edition Paper Giclee. These 13x19" prints are only available to Kickstarter Backers, and this edition will be limited to the number of Backers, making this a very rare reward! The creation of Cthulhu is featured in the ILTPM documentary, making it intrinsically bound to the film.
Chet Zar's Travel Easel. Yeah it's banged up, it's been used and abused by the Painter of Dark himself, and now you have an opportunity to pick up this one of a kind item! Comes with the new Monster Bust and other signature ILTPM items! Don't miss this once in a lifetime opportunity!
Back by popular demand! We have opened up a silver Sharpie sketched Black Magick book reward tier!
"Cthulhu" is also available to ILTPM Kickstarter Backers on a t-shirt! You can grab this by itself, or bundle it with a 13x19" Paper Giclee!
#fridaynightartdorks "Zarmy" Edition t-shirt, signed by Chet Zar. This Kickstarter exclusive, limited edition shirt will be handcrafted by Filmmaker Mike Correll on a screen-press in his studio.
Chet has worked with many amazing artists, musicians, filmmakers and special FX geniuses. Here are what some of them have to say about the "Painter of Dark".
Note: Images of Chet Zar paintings and frames featured on this Kickstarter project page may not be those offered as rewards!
Risks and challenges
The primary risk is time. Submission deadlines must be met in order to place ILTPM in the festivals, which will ultimately lead to its success. Although the budget has been set at $30K, this is the absolute minimum amount that it will take to achieve the most basic goals. Any amount above and beyond this will ensure that post production is expedited, and submission dates are met. Additional contributions will also ensure that I can personally promote ILTPM while it runs the film festival circuit, by traveling to the screenings.
From previous experience with Kickstarter projects, rewards are often late. The first ILTPM Kickstarter saw rewards arriving anywhere from one month to four months late. If rewards are running behind due to additional energy being focused on the documentary, I personally vow to keep you informed of the progress of your reward. It's worth noting that late rewards often come with extras to compensate for the tardiness!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
