About this project
Hello Virtual Universe!
My name is Joti Shephi, a.k.a. Jotifah. I am here to ask for your collaboration and financial support in recording my debut studio album!
As a homage to creator, my ancestors and the generation to come I bring forth my Jewish tradition, mixed with original lyrics and dance beats to create this album. My music embodies the full spectrum of who I am and the path I have traveled. It comes from my grandparents from the heart of the Eastern European Jewish ghettos of Galicia and Germany.
The lyrics in the songs on this album came to me as I rode my red bike through the dark streets in Brooklyn on my way to a Brazilian night club in the East Village. They arrived as I drove toward my school garden through the industrial zones and ports of San Francisco. They reveal themselves still on long rides past cow pastures and horse stables near my current home in a rural neighborhood right outside of San Francisco.
My music is a prayer; it is a quest; it is a ceremony.
I am a songstress.
When I share a song on stage or amongst friends, I feel a sense of wonder and divine connection to my purpose in this world. Singing has propelled me through dark times and has given me an outlet to express my blissful experiences.
I am working with world-class musicians and my favorite DJ to bring you the highest quality of music that I can imagine!
My goal for this kickstarter campaign is to cover the costs of producing this album: $9577
• 2 days of studio time with an engineer: $1600
• Professional Musicians: $1500
• DJ's remixing: $3500
• Mastering: $250
• Mixing: $750
• Graphic Design and CD production: $1977
When I was in a Jewish youth group as a child, the counselors would challenge us to sing loud and would reward us with candy. I was so excited by this call and would often be standing on the camp dining tables with a pocket full of candy and a hoarse voice by the weekend’s end. It was my way of reaching into the core of my being and honoring this gift; as my voice grew louder, the outer world became more still and there was space for me to simply be.
In my early twenties I began to bring my voice into the world with directed intention. I found myself performing at cafés with a variety of talented musicians - we sung Capoeira songs, original music, Jewish tunes. On the West Coast, I spearheaded Eyn Tuchus, which was a 7-piece band of Klezmeresque, Reggae-infused Jewish tunes. We performed at several venues around the Bay Area. My latest performance was with Emerging Jewish Voices, a program of the Jewish Community Center of the East Bay:
And here I am now. I have waited for the right time to offer my music, witnessing friends share their music and listening for the call to offer my own gifts. I have peeled away the layers, the fruit has ripened, and it is time.
I am here to serve this call and I do this with excitement, great anticipation, and much gratitude for you, my community.
Thank you for your generous support and making this dream come true!
Risks and challenges
The risk of stepping towards this project is putting everything into it and not receiving the full amount. That being said, I feel confident in my ability to meet my goal and launch this project successfully.
I have spent over three months doing thorough research to bring this project to fruition. This includes the following:
• Spoken with people who have launched successful kickstarter campaigns
• Secured individual donors to contribute to this project
• Researched the price of the studio I want to record at
• Confirmed this project with my dj and musicians
• Worked with a music arranger who has recorded 5 songs for this album
I also believe in my ability to organize around my dreams. I have catalyzed bands and successfully managed several gardens and farms. If I can bring plants to life then I can bring my dreams to life as well.
I also trust my consistency and commitment to life. I also know that by receiving your continuous support I will be reminded of the purpose of this work and my ability to complete it.
A thousand thank you’s!
May your generosity be repaid to you a thousand-fold.
