Why Did You Decide To Do This?
(transcribed from video)
For years I have wanted to create children’s books. I love to illustrate. I love the important messages that come in such small packages. I love the vibrancy. I love the enjoyment that children get out of reading them over and over and over.
So, when I found out the graphic design program I’m attending offers a semester long independent study, I asked myself “what is the most important thing in my life and how can I use this as my focus?”
This was simple: my daughter, Juniper.
By the time I finish my degree, Juniper will be almost 2 years old. The books that we are currently reading to her are going to start making more and more sense and she will, therefore, start making more connections. This realization led me to discover that I have the power to help her make these connections, and furthermore, help other children as well.
Those things our children learn in the first few years of their lives are of paramount importance foundationally and I wanted to use what skills and creativity I have to be a part of that, whether it be for just my daughter, or for sons and daughters everywhere.
What I want to accomplish with an ABC book isn’t just about those 26 letters. It isn’t just about the 26 adorable animals that will be featured. It’s about all of this, plus the 26 alliterative human professions that these animals will embody.
This concept is essentially a way to communicate to children that they can be anything they want and they shouldn’t let anything stand in their way, especially stereotypes. We are all capable of so much more than society wants us to believe and I feel that this needs to hit home as young as possible.
Where Is My Money Going?
Originally I hadn’t planned on having this book printed. I was just going to have a few of them done for class and that was it. But something inside me told me that the message contained in with this book was too important to keep to myself.
Once the book is completed, I’m going to print a first run of 750 copies and make sure that all of you beautiful souls who backed this project get their hands on them first! The rest will be sold both online and distributed to applicable local small businesses in the greater Louisville, Kentucky area (bookstores, toy stores, children’s museum, baby stores, galleries, etc.) with the hope that every last one of them ends up in the tiny hands of all your little dreamers out there.
Once published, I'll be donating 10 copies to local libraries in the greater Louisville area. Also, for every book sold, 5% of it will go to the National Center for Families Learning, a Louisville, Kentucky based organization who's goal is to create educational and economic opportunity for the most at-risk children and parents in the United States. Follow the link for more information!
Also, if this is the success that I hope it is, it won’t stop with just one book. I have some exciting ideas for a few more books already that I would love to share. I could only dream of being 1/100th of what Dr. Seuss or Eric Carle are and, if this is at all possible, I would owe it to you all for helping me hit the ground running.

Risks and challenges
I can say with 100% certainty that all pledge gifts will be fulfilled on time. However, the project is not yet complete and, as a stay-at-home father of a 20 month old AND a student, the dates listed are post graduation when a little more of my schedule is freed up! If it just so happens there are a lot of pledges at the $150 custom print level, this may require more time to fulfill and I will keep you all up to date on the progress!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
