We started playing together as a band when we were just 13 years old. Over the next twenty years we put out six records and toured the country many times, staying in more Howard Johnsons than most people ever will. Or should.
Between 1987 and 1996 we made five albums as Uncle Green, and one as 3 Lb Thrill. (Same four members, new name, long story). In the Spring of 1997 we started work on what was supposed to be our seventh album. We rented a house in Atlanta, converted it into a temporary studio, and spent the next month living a kind of childhood dream. On a typical day we would all come into the studio, hear a song Matt and/or Jeff had written, and then try to find the best way to record it. The privacy of a home studio and the extra time allowed us to experiment in ways we never would have otherwise.
When we were done we had 32 songs. We called the album Rycopa.
Unfortunately, our record company did not share our enthusiasm and decided not to release it. We started looking for a new label, but after a few close calls nothing panned out. Band members began going to college and raising families, and the four of us decided that the band's active days were over.
(Sidenote: Matt went on to make a solo record, and this project gives you a chance to own that, as well!)
A few years ago we realized that the masters for Rycopa, which were on old-fashioned analog tape, needed to be found and saved before they decomposed. After a long search (special thanks to Russell Carter & Co.), the tapes were discovered and safely returned to us. They were then transferred onto a hard drive (special thanks to Rob Gal and ProTools). Technology has changed a lot in the last 14 years.
Now we want to mix and master the recordings, and that's where we need your help. The money we raise will be used for pay for studio time--with 32 songs, it will take a while to properly mix them. Then we will master the album and produce CDs to send to everyone who supports the project. Particularly enthusiastic supporters will get even more delicious rewards!
Drop me a line if you have any further questions, and thanks for taking the time to read about our project.
