Hey Guys,

The clock ticks as we get closer to the end of the campaign. Thank you all for being with us on this incredible journey. This does not mark the end but rather the start. We will be 100% focused on delivering you the best product and on time.

Powering the Scentee Machina

We were originally planning to have the device powered with lithium batteries. But we decided to make with the A/C cable only for this version.

The reasons are:

  • From a development perspective, it is 4-5 much difficult, although a low need for it.
  • And we are facing shipping problems due to regulations being different for each country (even DHL & Fedex won't ship to some countries).
  • This becoming the biggest risk point for delivering the Scentee Machina to all backers.

Since delivering the device to each backer is out top priority,  we decided to take the battery out, and make it only with A/C cable.

Naturally, the next question will be about the which plug shape will it be shipped with?

The answer is that the power cable will have a USB end, just like smartphones. so you can plug it to any power adapter that has USB as an input. We will ship a Type A plug with the device though.

Some campaigns get around the battery issues you’ve mentioned by shipping units without a battery installed and then having users buy one themselves in their own country to insert. For instance, you could tell us what kind of lithium batteries are needed (such as 18,500), and then we can go buy them ourselves. I really like the idea of Scentee being wireless so it can be placed anywhere in a room, moved easily, etc. The cord may be okay for some, but I see it as a major feature because of where I’m intending on using it.

Making this change with only 24 hours to go in the campaign is a bit unfair as I’m certain many backers won’t see this update until after the campaign has ended. I realize the problem and you have valid concerns, but when you present a campaign with a major feature and then change it at last minute, you aren’t giving backers enough time to decide whether the product is still right for their needs. Some campaigns make minor changes to their devices that are cosmetic or changes to an equivalent part because a supplier backed out — you’re making a major change to Scentee’s user interface and user experience. Yes, you’re doing so before the campaign is over, but you will have upset backers who will not have seen this update before the campaign ends. Why is this only coming up now with 24 hours to go rather than considering the major issues and risks that are faced by using batteries? Did your team not consider these matters before the campaign? What led your team to make this change on the last day of your campaign?

Even though I’ve seen your update, I’m a bit torn about how to proceed because I love Scentee, but I really need it to have the capability of being powered without a cord. I would also think that the price should go down considerably if you’re removing a major component — integrating a battery would cost far more to develop, purchase the components, do safety testing, etc. than using a simple power plug. I’ve been your biggest fan, as you know, but this decision really feels like a major last minutes afterthought that changes the usability of your product in a major way. It limits where you can place Scentee (ie: can’t place it on a high shelf, in the middle of a table, etc. because of the cord), the ability to move it around easily (many outlets are behind furniture or in awkward places, and moving a Scentee would require moving the furniture to get to the outlet and/or buying much longer USB cables), etc.

Had Scentee been wired from the start of your campaign, I don’t know if I would have backed it. The price of Scentee now being too high since it no longer has the charging capability is a secondary issue, as I explained above. I’d really hate to back out of my pledge now, but I may have to if you’re going to change the power source because of where I intended on placing the device and how I would have moved it around. I have a lot of thinking to do now . . . backing out of a pledge isn’t something I do unless there is a major reason, and this change may sadly constitute as such.
