The Story Behind The Story...
This new picture book has a story all about about identity and acceptance. "Olive The Dog Who Was Really A Frog" encourages individual differences to be universally accepted, to nurture friendships and promote strength through diversity.
The book is inspired by a real life Miniature Schnauzer, Olive, and her not-so-dog-like behaviour. Ever since she was a puppy, she has jumped more than walked, and licked more than barked. Along with the influence of friends and family in the LGBTQ community, the idea for the book was born!
While the idea originates in gender and identity, the book attempts to promote the unified inclusion, celebration and encouragement of all of our differences.
I have truly loved creating this book, and I really hope you enjoy it too...have a look at the story time video above if you haven't already!
The Road Ahead...
After many months of devotion to the project, the work on the book itself is all finished! Various samples have already been gone through to tweak the artwork for print, and the design for the book poster is done. Printing has been tested, with finalised samples of all products having already been produced.
Promotion through social media has already begun, with a number of organisations requesting sample copies for reviews and events. There is also a long list of sites and groups that are lined up for engagement along side the Kickstarter, to maximise exposure and spread the word about the story.
The funds for this project will very simply go towards bulk printing the material, as well as framing, packaging and shipping, to fulfill backer pledges. This is a self-published project, so funds will also be used to register an ISBN for the book. Hopefully it will also be possible to create future sales avenues, to make the book available past this campaign.
Quotes for printing and pledge fulfillment for the book, posters and framing have already been obtained, and these costs have been built into the funding target. This is to ensure that quick and efficient fulfillment is achievable as soon as possible if the campaign is successful!
An ugly mug shot of the creator...
Thank you so much for checking out the page, I'm so excited to share it with you. If you want to help make the book real, please pledge if you can!
Risks and challenges
This is my first book! I'm pretty certain I have done my research in terms of the requirements to self-publish (ISBN registration, copyright information, British Library filing etc.), but I haven't entered the market with a book before. It will be an interesting challenge to hit the right chord in terms of marketing and promotions. Having said this, I have researched campaigns that have proven successful in the past, and have a good idea of avenues to target, so hopefully this engagement will prove useful!
I have quoted with various printers and fulfillment services, but there is always the chance prices will change or a supplier will let me down... you never know! I have spent the last two years co-running an eCommerce business, so have experience with online sales, procurement and distribution. I am confident I have budgeted adequately to allow some wiggle room for coordinating fulfillment services if things don't quite go to plan!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
