About

Hi, my name is David Weinstock and I created The Thinket.

The Thinket, my patented fidget-device, is an all-around fidget-friendly companion for grownups, young adults, and reasonably mature children of all ages.

This Kickstarter project "The Thinket Now" represents the first-release of several new Generation 3.0 advancements, as part of my ongoing quest to evolve and perfect this engaging device.

SCROLL HALF-WAY DOWN THIS PAGE FOR THE "REWARD LEVELS" SECTION

During my first two Thinket Kickstarter projects ("The Thinket" in 2013 and "The Thinket Too" in 2014), several important innovations in the evolution of this device were made possible, due to the generous pledges of my Kickstarter Backers.

You can check out both projects in detail at the following links:

The Thinket (2013)

The Thinket Too (2014)

In those projects you can check out the original videos and information about the Thinket's history, background, and development, along with testimonials, comments, and a goodly number of project updates.

Now, let's take a look at what this new Thinket project is all about:

A major portion of this project's initial $9,400 funding-goal will allow me to take the next critical manufacturing step by greatly enhancing production-costs of the Thinket's Handle and Slider components.

To do that, I'm contracting with a longstanding USA steel company to provide the first-ever production-run of custom, solid stainless-steel tubing from which the Thinket's Slider-Tubes will be manufactured going forward (this is a big step for the Thinket).

In addition, I've received an excellent quote from a large USA machine-shop for quantity production of stainless-steel Handle-shells and Slider-Heads that will allow me to offer high-quality stainless-steel Thinkets at only a fraction of the cost that they now require in smaller quantities.

Here's a basic summary of this project's cost breakdown:

1- Manufacturing, including material costs, new tooling, machining of parts, engraving, assembly components, final assembly, and quality-control (most of the Thinket's production requires minimum quantities for both material and machining, accounting for much of this project's costs).

2) The most significant single cost in this project's initial funding goal is for the production of a large volume of custom stainless-steel tubing for the making of Thinket Slider-Tubes right here in the USA. This is for a minimum-footage manufacturing-run of custom, tight-tolerance, lead-free, 303 stainless-steel tubing, having dimensions and tolerance specifications that until now have been unavailable as stock stainless-steel tubing here in the USA.

3- Essential project setup costs including: Video, artwork, animation, and other professional fees. These professional fees include engineering, tooling, and machining costs for the newest GEN 3.0 version Thinket Now Handle and Slider-Head components.

4- Reward fulfillment: including packing & shipping.

5- $1,880 - Kickstarter/Visa-MC-takeaway, plus, "the Fudge-Factor."

6- And last-but-not-least, I'd be remiss if I did not earmark a hefty-albeit-necessary percentage of this project's funds for the "tax-man."

Funds beyond the initial $9,400 goal:

Additional project funds will make possible such things as: New versions of "The Thinket Now" using new material options, stretch-goals, and the inclusion of certain complimentary items for my Backers within each of the various Reward Levels, etc.

Most of the assembly, packing, and fulfillment will take place here at my workshop in the Pacific Northwest, near Seattle, WA, USA.

For any of you good folks who are unfamiliar with the Thinket, I'd like to offer you the short description that it's a handheld fidget-device (also sometimes referred to as a "stress-relief-toy").

One of the reactions to this device that still amazes me is what happens when a person holds a Thinket in their hands for the first time:

They almost always ask me, "So what is it, what does it do?"

And the funny thing is, new Thinket users ask that question while intuitively fidgeting with it: Pushing and pulling the Slider, flipping the Thinket around while holding it, and playing with it in other ways.

For me as an inventor that's one of the most gratifying things about the Thinket: It does not need to be explained to be used and enjoyed.

In this project I offer several of my own thoughts about the Thinket as a device, as-well-as about the nature of its ongoing development and the direction that I feel it's headed.

And by that I mean not merely as a "fidget-device," but also as somewhat of a "self-actuation tool" that can be engaged both during general "mindless-fidgeting" and to help with focus and concentration, enhanced mindfulness, and the like.

Over an extended period of time I've received comments from many people telling me that they have ADD, ADHD, OCD or other spectrum related conditions, and that the Thinket helps them to relax and focus.

Several folks have even mentioned that they experience a "sense of well-being” while using the Thinket.

Some of the most encouraging reactions I've had from Thinket users over the years can be emphasized in part by this testimonial letter sent to me a few years ago, during my first Kickstarter project.

Donna, who had received a Thinket from one of my sisters as a gift for her 10 year-old son (diagnosed with Asperger Syndrome) wrote:

"I am an educated, single mother of a 10 year old child diagnosed with both ADHD and Asperger Syndrome. His name is Dylan.

For those of you who are unfamiliar with Asperger Syndrome, it can be simply described as a high functioning child on the autism spectrum. Asperger traits include an inability to maintain eye contact, inability to understand social guidelines, and aversions to loud noises and certain textures. These children are very literal and are usually drawn to things which are absolute in nature.

The upside of a child with Asperger Syndrome is they are extremely smart and think outside the box. It doesn’t mean these children don’t have feelings or emotions … it just means they have trouble understanding yours and properly expressing theirs.

Asperger children look like any other child on the street and unfortunately they are held to the same standards. My son gets extra time in school with regards to testing but gets no other accommodations. As you can imagine the world can be a confusing, scary and harsh place for these children.

My son recently developed a bad habit of picking his teeth/gums until they bleed. The other children in school called him gross. I have since learned that this habit stems from severe anxiety.

The Thinket has been a Godsend. Dylan absolutely loves it and I find it to be a socially acceptable way to reduce his anxiety. It doesn’t hurt that the other kids find the Thinket fascinating. They sometimes ask to play with it which has been a conversation starter for my son.

With Great Appreciation, Donna DaSilva"

That letter completely blew me away when I read it, and since then I've felt very encouraged that the Thinket could have that type of a positive affect on someone.

IMPORTANT NOTE: The Thinket is not intended as a treatment for any medical-health or mental-health conditions or symptoms.

Over time I've also come to think of the Thinket as a kind of personal-pocket-companion, one that's always there if needed and one that is durable enough to last for a lifetime.

Almost anyone can play with the Thinket in a variety of ways:

Clicking the Thinket, twirling it, table-spinning it, manipulating it with the hands, and exercising with it are all fun and engaging activities in which the Thinket may even help to improve one's hand & finger strength and dexterity.

And while I've come to realize the ways people use the Thinket are varied, there has been a common, positive-reaction from many of my customers and backers to the Thinket's "satisfying-bounce" effect.

Because of that, since the completion of my previous Kickstarter project I've been experimenting with adding some new tactile-sensations to the workings of the Thinket.

My results have suggested that, for starters, I should add a particular effect that I call a "reassuring-thud."

Simply put, this added sensation is accomplished by the new design of the Thinket now, through the machining of custom O-Ring grooves into the new Thinket Now Slider-Heads. Such features will make it easy for the user to "experience the thud" or "not experience the thud" by adding or removing the special O-Rings to-and-from the machined grooves at will.

Another thing I've learned over the past several years is that certain plated-metals (such as plated-aluminum, plated-brass, and plated-ferrous steel) while visually appealing in brand-new-condition, can pose significant challenges both during the production-phase as well as during the lifetime-of-use phase, since plated finishes may often become compromised by various types of damage, and are then difficult (and impractical) to restore to their original pristine-aesthetic appearance.

With a solid, non-plated metal such as stainless-steel, surface-damage can be buffed out or ground-out, then polished (if one likes that sort of thing), at which time they're generally none-the-worse-for-wear!

This simply means that Thinkets with plated finishes, while appealing to hold and to look at and to use, do require a bit more care in handling by the user than do those that have been fabricated using non-plated metals (such as stainless-steel or bronze, for example) in order to remain in good condition over a lifetime or more of use.

And this brings us to one of the fundamental differences in production-costs for the softer "free-machining" metals like aluminum, brass, and steel (which need to be plated), compared to harder metals such as stainless-steel (which do not require plating): The softer metals can be machined at much high-speeds for lower production costs, whereas a metal such as stainless-steel must be machined more slowly and carefully, thereby costing considerably more to process into finished components.

And so as I mentioned in this project's video, a primary reason for the initial funding goals in this project is for enabling the Thinket to transition away from plated-metals towards solid metals that don't need to be plated.

Now then, let's get on to the Rewards!

If you prefer to have a more assured seasonal delivery of a single Thinket or multiple Thinkets for sometime this year, one good way to ensure that particular outcome is to select something for purchase from my current web-store offerings at www.Thinket.com.

A NOTE TO OUR INTERNATIONAL BACKERS:

There are unique processes that pertain to international backers which we'd like you to know about: Please remember that there is no way for us to charge an additional amount on our end for applicable Customs Duties, Fees, or VAT/Taxes or fees that are a result of a specific country's Tax Code or Customs Office Rules and Regulations. We have no control over those expenses, and because of that those fees / taxes are the Backer's responsibility when the Reward shipment enters their country.

Quite by accident, the creation and development of the Thinket began in 2009 when I briefly toyed with the idea of making a two-headed pop-up game piece for my new board game at the time, "ZoxSo: The New Ancient Game."

I had fabricated a few rough prototypes before deciding that it was too impractical, especially for the first production-run of a board game intended for the mass market.

At the same time however, I also realized something about the most successful prototype that I'd made, namely, that it was pretty addictive to mess around with.

I remember clicking and flipping it at my worktable while thinking ... "This is something!"

And over the next few months I continued to work on my new gadget to improve it in various ways.

I redesigned it many times, making it smaller and more pleasing to hold and to use. I made prototypes with varying core and Handle form-factors.

The prototypes were quite varied, and many of those early prototypes can be seen in the description, images, links and updates in my first Kickstarter project (The Thinket, 2013).

In May of 2009 I dubbed my new toy "The Thinket" and applied for a provisional US patent.

Then in May of 2010 I filed a regular patent application, submitting it as a "Handheld Finger Manipulating Device."

So began the Thinket's 3-year journey through the US Patent labyrinth.

Fast-forward more than three years later to January 7th, 2013, when my patent attorney sent an email congratulating me on the publication of my new patent's Notice of Allowance!

And just like that, I was the proud owner of my first patent!

Now here we are in 2018 and I have several important goals in mind for the Thinket's continued development and "evolution" so to speak.

You can help me turn these integral Thinket goals into realities by backing this project, and in return you'll get some cool Thinket Rewards!

Your support will help me to continue perfecting and evolving the Thinket, and also to keep making it right here in the USA.

Thank you so much for your Support!

David Weinstock is an inventor (and avid fidgeter) living in the Pacific Northwest near Seattle, Washington.

David's first-ever Kickstarter project called, "The Thinket" was successfully funded and fulfilled between May 2013 and May 2014.

His second Kickstarter project called, "The Thinket Too" was successfully funded and fulfilled between November 2014 and December 2015.

David's studio & workshop-based business and website is Thinket.com, from and for which he creates and sells a variety of Thinkets and ChessMate magnetic pocket & travel chess sets, as-well-as other unique inventions and offerings.

Since 1993 David Weinstock has been designing, manufacturing, and selling The ChessMate® brand magnetic pocket and travel chess sets through his webstore ChessMate.com, and now through Thinket.com.

He began creating original boardgames and card games in 2000, and he self-published the games ChessHeads® (2004), Sizzletoad! (2005), and ZoxSo® The New Ancient Game (2009).

His award-winning boardgame ZoxSo® led surprisingly to the creation of the primary, original Thinket prototype, and the rest is Thinket history.

Since 2009 David has designed and fabricated many Thinkets, both as prototypes and in relatively small production-runs.

Here I'd like to mention that there are three exceptional individuals whose contributions to this Thinket Kickstarter project have been absolutely indispensable, namely: Cody Umberger (Engineering Drawings & Consultation), Thad Nutting (Animation & Artwork), and Gary Fozard (ThinketYogi Mandala & GearHeart Video-Logo Artwork).

Once again, additional thanks and kudos go out to:

Cody Umberger, Thad Nutting, Gary Fozard, and James Hoffman; as-well-as Mike Buley, Kathleen Pihs, Frances Weinstock, Jeff Wilcox, Danny Moallem, Moriah Fox Moallem, Yoni Greenfield, Avital Greenfield, Kyle Keyes, Presley Keyes, Maha El Mais, Johnnie Keyes, Barry Hill, Dr. Ian Tullberg, Greg Irwin, Leah Chung, Megan Ingalls, Jeremy Whittemore, James Lutsch, Mitchell London, and Wes Greene.

Thanks also to Kickstarter, for creating this cool venue!

Risks and challenges

** RISKS AND CHALLENGES **

I'm more dedicated than ever to the Thinket's evolution and to ensuring that this new Kickstarter project "The Thinket Now" is a big success!

My first two Thinket Kickstarter projects, "The Thinket" and "The Thinket Too" were quite successful regarding both funding and fulfillment, which is something that I'm very grateful to all of my Kickstarter Backers and Supporters for.

I've also created and sold many "Made in the USA" products since 1993, everything from original games such as ZoxSo, Sizzletoad! and ChessHeads, to my trademarked line of ChessMate magnetic pocket and travel chess sets. And, since 2009 I've fabricated, sold, and shipped out many different versions of the Thinket.

I have high marks from Thinket.com and ChessMate.com customers around the world because of my emphasis on craftsmanship and customer satisfaction.

With that said, there are many steps that go into manufacturing the Thinket. Materials acquisition, tooling, machining, engraving, and in-house assembly of component parts are intensive and expensive.

During the past couple of years I've concentrated on lining up agreements with several reliable contractors in the machining industry, and they have all assured me that they will be ready and able to go forward to meet any of my Thinket production demands for this project.

And as far as the final assembly, packaging, and fulfillment go, those are things that I'm particularly good at and focused on.

Those are some of the very same details that I've built Mindspan Labs, Thinket.com and ChessMate.com upon: I'm just not happy unless my customers are happy.

And please note that, since I'm also focused on being a responsible manufacturer, each device comes with very clear usage warnings which are part of the pamphlet that ships with the Thinket!

That’s because the Thinket has two moving parts that make up the mechanism, including a very powerful magnet located inside the central Slider.

Because of that, I place very clear warnings in the Thinket product pamphlet for all of my Backers and customers to see.

Following are several warnings that come with each and every Thinket.

WARNING: Choking Hazard
The Thinket is NOT for use by small children!

The Thinket should be kept away from children or pets that may try to swallow its components. Keep the Thinket away from magnetically sensitive items and devices such as pacemakers, magnetic storage devices and other magnetically sensitive technology, credit cards, gift cards, and any other items or property that could be affected or harmed by strong magnets.

The Thinket should be kept away from anyone who uses or intends to use it to harm others or themselves, or to create mischief, or to use it irresponsibly in any way. Please use the Thinket with as much common sense as possible.

Do not take the Thinket apart. Do not try to stick fingers or other appendages into the Thinket, nor to stick the Thinket where it might cause damage to a person or property. Do not try to throw the Thinket, nor to use it as a weapon, nor to use it in any other inconsiderate or reckless manner.

Do not immerse the Thinket in any type of liquid or in any corrosive chemicals or substances, since that type of mistreatment of the Thinket could damage it and possibly cause it to malfunction, and could also cause it to come apart thereby making it less safe to handle.

People who suffer from physical illnesses or conditions such as carpel tunnel, arthritis, tendonitis, or any other sort of condition of the fingers, hands, wrists, or arms should not use the Thinket without first consulting a licensed physician.

One other thing to be aware of is, that the Thinket has metal components in it, some of which are plated with other metals. Please take care of your Thinket, since damage can be caused to the plated finishes for example, by impacting asphalt, or any other hard and rough service.

If the plated coatings of a Thinket become nicked or otherwise damaged, the long term integrity of those plated surfaces can be compromised, causing excessive wear and tear or deterioration over the years.

Take care of your Thinket, and it will offer you years and years of fidgety fun!

    * HEX-CLICK THINKET (Brass & Stainless)

    * You may add an extra copy of this item for $72 in the USA or $76 Worldwide (these amounts include additional shipping).

This Reward is for one complete Hex-Click Thinket, consisting of a machined solid Brass Handle, with a distressed-metal surface that has been plated with hard-Nickel, followed by a lead-free Brass plating layer. The Slider-Heads and Slider-Tube of this Hex-Click Thinket Now are machined from solid Stainless-Steel.

The outer finish on the Hex-Click Thinket Handle has a unique look and feel, that incorporates unusual, dark striations that vary from Handle to Handle (please see photograph of the surface-effect below the product illustration drawing). As a result, every Hex-Click Thinket Handle is unique.

** NOTE: Please see the images of this offering in the "Reward Levels" section of the project page.

PLEASE NOTE: The Handle of the "Hex-Click Thinket" offers two new "Pen-Clicking" style actions, accomplished by means of a special flared-sleeve-apparatus, and is backwards-compatible with any pre-existing Thinket Slider.

Any bonus extras intended for this Reward-Level will be included.

NOTE: This Thinket will retail for $82 (plus shipping) after the KS project.
