About this project
GIRLS, JUST IMAGINE . . .
WHAT IF YOU DIDN’T HAVE TO WASH OFF OLD MAKEUP EVERY TIME YOU WANT A NEW LOOK!
WE WANT THE KAMAHAPA 3D EXPERIENCE TO BE LIKE GROOMING IN FRONT OF A LARGE MIRROR!
WE WANT TO ADD HAIR STYLES, BLING-BLING, MORE LOOKS AND COLORS.WE’RE NOT THERE YET.
SO BECOME OUR KICKSTARTER AND CHECK OUT THE VIDEOS (intro above and demo at the end)!
PROTOTYPE: MAASAIVATAR FEMALE – BRAIDED HAIR
We’re a Dad (Chris) and Daughter (Pendo) Team!
And we love to play family games, everything from console games to all kinds of board games.
One of our favorite apps is Dance Central on XBox.Of course, Pendo is the better dancer and she’s also a budding actor as well.
Pendo has been a main actor in big-brand TV advertising and also credited in the 2014 movie, “The Grimm Sleeper.”Pendo is also a key actor in a made for TV series soon to launch, “Preggoland” (shhh!).
That’s why Pendo’s diva qualities make her the Chief of Design (CoD) for our 3D avatars.
Chris is the app engineer and fixer-upper.When Pendo said “The avatar needs hair!” That was no small matter, but Chris fixed that.
But we’re not there yet . . .THERE’S SO MUCH YOU CAN DO TO MAKE A HEAD LOOK RIGHT!
That’s where you can contribute, by becoming our Kickstarter.
Check us out in the intro video above. As you will see, we’re just ordinary folk with a dream.
Also check out the video at the end of this Kickstarter where we take you right into the guts of our Maasaivatar app.
We didn’t want to come to you with sketches on kitchen paper towels and napkins.
Maasaivatar is real, but she’s not done yet.
PROTOTYPE: ASIAAVATAR female – drop pixie hair
“Kichwa” means “head” in Kiswahili. That’s a direct translation as a noun. However, kichwa can also be used as a title, a pronoun such as in “Head of Design” or “Head Pilot.”So we had the “aha moment” and realized it’s not a stretch to use Kichwa to mean Avatar as well.
That’s why our 3D avatars are “Kichwas.”
Kichwa is the main title for the series of 3D avatars we are making. Each “kichwa” is based on an ethnic theme for both female and male profiles. For example, the theme for our flagship kichwa is inspired by the Maasai people of East Africa and it is subtitled, “Maasaivatar Female.”
Although the Maasai are our inspiration, this 3D canvas release will be based on a hybrid of African female facial profiles. We explain that further ahead under section title, “Why Maasaivatar.”
Rather than have you splash your photo on a 3D Canvas, we want to make 3D canvases that allow you to create your own character-based kichwa: we provide the 3D canvas, you do the rest.Maasaivatar is our very first character and it’s not hard to see a big-box storyline for Maasaivatar.
Our goal is to give every person the chance, “To express on a kichwa” and to share it with friends!
We want people to enjoy themes from all over the world. We’re presently building other ethnic kichwas. We plan to expand on Asian ethnicities, Caucasian profiles, more hybrids like Maasaivatar. Then, we leave the best part for you: to color them red, green, blue, purple . . .To change their shapes, such as shaping eyebrows, shaping the nose, shaping lips and so forth.
We also plan to build upon the existing Maasaivatar prototype. With every upgrade, there will be more hairstyles, more colors, more sizing options, greater motion range (like multiple rotation), more animation sequences, more styling . . .The opportunities for kichwa-effects are unlimited!
PROTOTYPE: MAASAIVATAR female – short hair
It was a fine summer season in 2012 when Chris was looking for a Kiswahili moniker for 3D productions. After passing around Kiswhahili names over a couple of weeks, Chris was growing weary with the Team rejecting names. Then one day, Pendo yelped, “KAMAHAPA!That sounds cool.”
Well, Pendo may have picked KamaHapa because it sounds cool. But that doubles as a real word in Kiswahili.Kamahapa is an expressive compound or joined word. Kama means “Such or Example”; Hapa means “Here or This Place.”Soooo KamaHapa literally means “Such as Here” . . .But a more conversational translation is, “Such-as-This.”
It’s not like we haven’t tried making 3D productions before, but we wanted a production that was fun to build, expressive, having character, original and fun for players, even fun for non-gamers as well. After six years of pondering, designing, building, failing, trying again, failing again . . .Finally, we really do have a very exciting 3D production on the way.
But we need your help to grow the story. All respectable game makers know the drill; “To keep the game fun, you have to keep improving, and that takes time, effort and yes, more money.”
We’re just regular folk with a dream.
KamaHapa is a platform to a larger dream: “To promote freedom of expression around the world.”
Each 3D Kichwa template we design promotes freedom of expression.
Maasaivatar is fashionable as well. The Maasai are renowned for great fashion wear, including the shaven head. And we’re needing your support so we can add adornments as well: beaded necklaces, large earings, colored headbands, all that makes for an authentic Maasaivatar.
These Kichwas take months to develop with a small team like ours and that’s why we need you as our Kickstarter, to help us get there sooner.
Matter of fact, we have several unpublished games, including entirely new board games and we’re thinking of dusting the covers on those as well.
What girl doesn’t want a makeover? Our answer to that, is try out our Maasaivatar!
IN-APP ICON SAMPLE for SHORT-CURLY HAIR
No Worries, Hakuna Matata . . . This is not meant as academic lecture notes but African history played into the game. The Maasaivatar Kichwa is here because history made that happen; one thing lead to another.
Migrants to-and-from Africa date back thousands of years. That’s why Maasaivatar is able to cover a wide-range of ethnic profiles.Ancient empires, such as Cush, had reach beyond the continent of Africa, sometimes called upon as allies in ancient Hebrew wars.Another historical account narrates Caesar Augustus’ decree that a census be taken of the entire Roman Empire. As the narrative goes on, many from colonies of Rome would flee the census, including people the Jewish and Arabian colonies. And then there are the accounts dating back to the legend of Noah and his Ark.
Many black people in Eastern and Northern Africa can trace their genetic profile to ancient Persian colonies and ancient Roman colonies.Jewish and Arabic people are no strangers to Africa and neither are ancient Greeks and Turks. So it is not a stretch of the imagination, certainly even plausible, that Middle-Eastern and European influences in Africa date back several millenia. We thought that was cool, so rather than make a movie, we’re making the Maasaivatar kichwa characters, soon to be followed by other kichwas.
All these legendary accounts inspired the characters of our Maasaivatar kichwas.
Below is a synopsis of the Maasai, "Why we are inspired by their art, fashion, culture resulting in our Maasaivatar":
·For many decades, researchers have suggested that the un-mixed Maasai is Hamitic possibly with Semitic mix but little is mentioned of Japhitic traits; all originating from the legend of Noah’s sons, Ham, Shem and Japheth.
·The traditional Maasai are a nomadic people with practices akin to ancient Hebrew traditions.
·Hamitic-Semitic ethnicities include the Tuareg of the Western Sahara Africa, the Hausa of the central Sahara Africa, the Hebrew people of Israel, The Tutsi of Rwanda, Arabs across the Middle East and Africa, the Somali people, Oromos of Ethiopia who are traced to ancient Hebrew tribes, Tigre in Sudan, Amharic speakers in Sudan, Beja of the Eastern Red Sea region Africa.
·Collectively, it is this Hamitic-Semitic anatomy that inspired the form of Maasaivatar.
·Legends can be an inspiration indeed, even if you have the remotest of connections to them!
·The Maasai are renowned for their artwork using leather and beads.
·In decades long gone by, the Maasai were also renowned warriors, able to fend off European invasions dating back to when the Portuguese were the world’s super power.
We are inspired. We’re excited to bring to the world new characters, all of which are suitable for a big-box movie. Our first such character is, “Maasaivatar.”That’s why we need you to participate in this Kickstarter.CHECK OUT THE DEMO VIDEO AHEAD!
PROTOTYPE: ROMAAVATAR female – long HAIR
But first things first, we need Maasaivatar out of the gate!
That’s where you come in, by becoming our Kickstarter.
Not every player can afford a gaming PC.
Not every player can afford a gaming console.
Not every player can afford a high-end mobile device either.
We know that.Growing up in Africa, we couldn’t afford gadgetry . . .BUT WE’S HEEAH IN VANCOUVER!
We believe every girl should have that chance, to express with a model, to put on makeup!
To make our Kichwa productions accessible, we’re packaging them as performance tracks.
Below is a simplified table of the Kichwa Tracks and Streams.See the more detailed description ahead.
·“TURTLE” TRACKS – for productions that are feature-intensive and thus computing-intensive.Because of the high performance demands of the Turtle Tracks, these will not be everyone’s toy.Titles for the Turtle Tracks are larger packages, with more features than Greyhound tracks. As such, Turtle Tracks will use more computing resources and will perform much slower on older computers, especially computers with no dedicated graphics hardware/firmware.
o Configurations for “Maasaivatar Female” will have two Turtle Track Streams (also see similar Greyhound Track Streams ahead):
- PLUS STREAM (with “PRESERVE” button): This stream allows the player to save changes by clicking a “PRESERVE” button as well as to display the avatar for screen capture (take a snapshot or video of 3D animation) after clicking a “DISPLAY button.”
- BASIC STREAM(with NO-PRESERVE button): There is no “preserve button” with this stream, however, the player can display the avatar for screen capture (take a snapshot or video of 3D animation) after clicking a “DISPLAY button.”
o Within the Turtle Track streams, there will be specialty package configurations, depending on on-going promotions. For example, limited edition configurations could be a special feature. For example, bundling with two or more Kamahapa apps could be another special feature like jewellery, including custom pedants for $500 and above contributors!
·“GREYHOUND” TRACKS – for less computing demands.Titles for the Grehound tracks are smaller packages, with fewer features that Turtle tracks, so as to use less computing resources. As such, Greyhound Tracks perform faster than Turtle Tracks. As well, Greyhound Tracks will be a lot more affordable that Turtle Tracks and Kamahapa plans to offer some free package configurations with the Greyhound Tracks.
o Configurations for “Maasaivatar Female” will have two Turtle Track Streams (same stream concept as Turtle Tracks):
- PLUS STREAM (with “PRESERVE” button): This stream allows the player to save changes by clicking a “PRESERVE button” as well as to display the avatar for screen capture (take a snapshot or video of 3D animation) by clicking a “DISPLAY button.”
- BASIC STREAM (with NO-PRESERVE button): There is no “preserve button” with this stream, however, the player can display the avatar for screen capture (take a snapshot or video of 3D animation) by clicking a “DISPLAY button.”
o Within the Greyhound Track streams, there will be specialty package configurations, depending on on-going promotions. For example, limited edition configurations could be a special feature. For example, bundling with two or more Kamahapa apps could be another special feature like jewellery, including custom pedants for $500 and above contributors!
o Kamahapa will also experiment with free download package configurations for the “Maasaivatar, GREYHOUND TRACK, BASIC STREAM” concepts. However, this approach depends on whether this Kickstarter campaign is successful.
·“GREYHOUND BEAM” TRACK – for productions streamed via the cloud (rather than downloaded to PC).We are thinking about the potential of streaming avatars which would open opportunities for internet streaming to any device.However, because of the higher cost-overhead of streaming services, including the potential for new laws addressing internet service provider (ISP) bandwidth, this approach depends on how much money is raised from this Kickstarter.Of course, funding models (e.g. pay-per-click advertising or even subscription payments) are feasible, but daunting;
o Hosting a cloud streaming service can become very expensive for a small business, so we need this Kickstarter dollar target to be very successful.
o But imagine if we raised millions of dollars instead thousands of dollars! With say a one million dollar startup, we would happily offer affordable streaming services.
o So Stay Tuned.
o And contribute to help us make this happen here at Kickstarter!

Maasaivatar delivery dates will be based on Kichwa Tracks.See Track descriptions in section above titled “The Kichwa Tracks”:
HOW WE CAME UP WITH THE $20,000 GOAL
As the Maasaivatar demo video ahead illustrates, we’ve already invested much in time, effort and personal resources. We’ve reached our wits ends in that regard and we do need help to reach our target; that takes $s.
Although the $20,000 goal is only a fraction of what we need, it is symbolic.$20,000 is a statement. If we then can tell the story and raise the remaining $s with a stronger narrative (a business case).
So join our Kickstarter.
Every great gaming project like Maasaivatar needs to consider a forecast outline over a periods of time:
1.The construction/development period
2.The delivery/publishing period
3.Support to maintain the publications over its natural lifetime: that includes patches, upgrades, customer feedback, promos . . .Everything needed to stay on top of our game.
NOTE: Most new businesses will run losses for more than three years after launch, so it takes more than a launch to keep a game alive!
Regardless whether the periods take weeks, months or years, a gaming business needs to pay $s for the following typical expenses over the three years (3yrs) based on an estimated 1,000 visitors per month.
The estimate shown in the table below falls well within the ballpark to deliver the female Kichwas. Likewise, a similar estimate would be needed to complete the male Kichwas.
Kamahapa commits to the following target delivery timelines, based on the existing Team size:
FULL-BODY 3D AVATARs, complete with fingers and toes, will require a different kickstarter, a larger Team and of course a larger budget.Likewise for downloads to Android and Apple (Mac OS).

See our approach to risks, definitions and descriptors used on the Kickstarter formatted RISKS section ahead.
As well, we do have a section on Social Media RISKS head: please, read it.
The tables below are a repetition of the information already provided on the Kickstarter formatted RISKS section . . . The table-images are provided here for easy viewing only. There is no new information in these tables.
Risks and challenges
We do have a section on Social Media RISKS head: please, read it.
When we were preparing for this Kickstarter RISKS section we decided we would share with you three considerations for each risk as shown below:
The first consideration is PROBABILITY of the risk to our project, which we denote as either; HIGH, MEDIUM, LOW or UNKNOWN.
- By probability, we mean “What is the likelihood of the risk occurring.” For example, the likelihood that a member of our Team will climb Mount Kilimanjaro and fall from a steep slope is very unlikely, so we consider that probability to be low.
- With the example above, we would post LOW against the PROBABILITY of such a risk.
The second consideration is IMPACT of the risk to our project, which we again denote as either; HIGH, MEDIUM, LOW or UNKNOWN.
- By impact, we mean “How much of an effect the risk can have on our project.” Using the same example from the probability example above, if that member of our project Team becomes fatally wounded from such a fall, we would be highly challenged to deliver on our project.
- As such, we would post HIGH against the IMPACT of such a risk.
The third consideration is DURATION of the risk to our project, which we denote as either; PERMANENT, DISRUPTIVE, TOLERATE or UNKNOWN.
We trust that the combination of PROBABILITY plus IMPACT plus DURATION gives you a sense of the EXTENT of risk you take in support our Maasavatar.
If a type of risk posts HIGH for PROBABILITY and again HIGH for IMPACT and again PERMANENT for DURATION, that’s a large EXTENT of risk (HIGH-HIGH-PERMANENT is not good). Likewise, if a risk posts LOW for PROBABILITY and again LOW for IMPACT and again TOLERATE for DURATION, that’s a small EXTENT of risk (LOW-LOW-TOLERATE is good).
So let’s now take a look at risks that are closer to the Maasaivatar project.
IMPORTANT: The risks outlined below are limited only to the expected delivery dates of this project.
TYPE OF RISK BEFORE DELIVERY DATE >> EXTENT/SCOPE OF RISK (PROBABILITY IMPACT DURATION)
Death of a Team Member >> LOW HIGH PERMANENT
A short-term physical disability besets a Team Member, for example, a torn ligament >> MEDIUM LOW TOLERATE
A long-term physical disability besets a Team Member, for example, amputation of a leg >> LOW MEDIUM DISRUPTIVE
A mental disability besets a Team Member >> LOW HIGH UNKOWN
This Kickstarter does not attain the goal of $20,000 >> MEDIUM HIGH PERMANENT
Security breach to Maasaivatar, like a Hacker attack >> MEDIUM MEDIUM TOLERATE
Product defects, malfunction, bugs and so forth >> MEDIUM MEDIUM TOLERATE
One-to-three month delayed delivery of Maasaivatar Rewards for contributions below $499.99 >> HIGH MEDIUM TOLERATE
Three-to-six month delayed delivery of Maasaivatar Rewards for contributions below $499.99 >> MEDIUM MEDIUM DISRUPTIVE
Over six month delayed delivery of Maasaivatar Rewards for contributions below $499.99 >> LOW HIGH DISRUPTIVE
One-to-three month delayed delivery of Maasaivatar Rewards for contributions above $500 >> MEDIUM LOW TOLERATE
Three-to-six month delayed delivery of Maasaivatar Rewards for contributions below $500 >> LOW LOW DISRUPTIVE
Over six month delayed delivery of Maasaivatar Rewards for contributions below $500 >> LOW MEDIUM DISRUPTIVE
We hope we covered all the risk angles.
HOW WE WILL DEAL WITH RISKS.
The following tables outlines how we will address risks, based on extent/scope:
EXTENT/SCOPE OF RISK COMBINATIONS
(PROBABILITY, IMPACT, DURATION) >> ACTION TO OVERCOME RISK
LOW, LOW, TOLERATE >> The scope of this type of risk is not significant. We will maintain vigil and keep pressing ahead.
MEDIUM, LOW, TOLERATE >> The scope of this type of risk is not significant. We will maintain vigil and keep pressing ahead.
HIGH, LOW, TOLERATE >> The scope of this type of risk is a concern. However, because the impact is low, the extent of this risk is within our tolerance. As such, we will maintain vigil. We will keep Contributors informed. And we will keep pressing ahead.
LOW, MEDIUM, TOLERATE >> The scope of this type of risk is a concern, if only because the impact is medium. However, the duration of this risk is short which means the extent of this risk is tolerable. As such, we will maintain vigil. We will keep Contributors informed. And we will keep pressing ahead.
LOW, HIGH, TOLERATE >> The scope of this type of risk is a priority because the impact is high. However, the duration of this risk is short which means the extent of this risk is tolerable. That said, we will make deliveries against such risks our top priority.
LOW, LOW, DISRUPTIVE >> The probability and impact of such a risk is not significant. Risks of this kind are commonly termed “Act of God,” meaning, we don’t think much about them until they strike. For example, the odds of being struck by lightning or being swallowed by a whale. There’s not much we can do with “Act of God” events.
LOW, LOW, PERMANENT >> Again, the probability and impact of such a risk is not significant. Risks of this kind are commonly termed “Act of God,” meaning, we don’t think much about them until they strike. For example, the odds of being struck by lightning or being swallowed by a whale. However, considering the permanent nature of such a risk, we ask Kickstarter Contributors to excercise kindness and understanding.
MEDIUM, MEDIUM, TOLERATE >> This type of risk is obviously a problem. That is the reason we preferred to come to Kickstarter only after we had a working prototype, rather than come with sketches on a kitchen napkin. That is the mindset we are taking forward: the mindset of “do-before-asking.”
HIGH, MEDIUM, TOLERATE >> This type of risk keeps us awake. We take precautions, for example, not playing high-impact sports. Our minds and fingers are our tools: we imagine with our mind; we create with our fingers. As such, we keep healthy. We don’t do contact sports and we keep innovating.
HIGH, HIGH, TOLERATE >> We have made every effort to avoid this type of risk. We have done as much as we could in advance of this Kickstarter, if only to avoid this risk. We’ve been learning to balance so many things. We are a tight-knit Team. That’s why we’ve been able to come this far. That’s a countermeasure against this kind of risk.
HIGH, MEDIUM, DIRSUPTIVE >> We have kept our delivery dates very realistic. We already know what it takes to deliver and we have a prototype demo as proof. All that said, we ask Contributors to give generously so we can hire backup workers. Our Team is confident of delivery, but should a risk of this nature materialize, it would be good to have the $s to ensure continuity.
HIGH, MEDIUM, PERMANENT >> This risk is a hazard. We’ve done everything we possibly could to overcome this risk. One way we can mitigate this risk is to deliver ahead of the expected delivery date. Please contribute generously so we can hire help and so deliver sooner rather than later.
HIGH, HIGH, PERMANENT >> This risk is catastrophic, like a nuke. There’s not many places to hide from such a risk. Although we can’t imagine this risk, we can only pray it doesn’t happen and that you get your reward in good time. Sorry, a nuke is a nuke.
SOCIAL MEDIA AS A RISK: THE CANADIAN SITUATION
KamaHapa wants to protect your contribution to our Kickstarter.
KamaHapa is a registered business in Canada where there are perhaps the most stringent laws, regulations and rules on personal privacy in the world. We did consider using social media for this Kickstarter, but we balked at the extent and scope of personal privacy laws in Canada.
New Canadian laws, such as the Anti-Spam law effective July 01, 2014 and the electronic media extension of the same law effective January 15, 2015, plus updated Provincial privacy laws as well as updated Federal privacy laws, the combination of which make the mixing of business communications and public social media somewhat precarious without the guidance of a legal advisor. These new laws are unprecedented in Canada. That is a real RISK to KamaHapa and the Team.
We decided that KamaHapa is better able to deliver your investment in your rewards by steering clearly away from public social media messages, with the exception of communications contained within Kickstarter.
If you see any of our videos on social media like YouTube, the posting will not have been done by KamaHapa or Team members. We can’t stop enthusiasts, so at least now you know how we’re handling RISKS. After this Kickstarter is over, we will broadcast OUR OWN YouTube video of the demo and any follow-up any updates coming out of this KickStarter . . . That’s the extent of social media we can afford, to protect your contribution.
KamaHapa has no funds for legal advice on social media. Without such legal advice, it is a very slippery slope for KamaHapa to engage in social media conversations outside of the context of this Kickstarter.
We hope you understand . . . The times, they are a-changin' . . . Once it was perfectly legal for Canadian businesses to engage in social media. But now the laws are playing catchup and businesses that want a good name want to protect their brand of trust. We value your trust, we're more than happy to share our ideas with you, right here in the protection of Kickstarter.
We need you to help us make this a successful Kickstarter. If we are successful, by attaining the $20,000 goal, we will activate our very KamaHapa domain name (yes, we do own the domain name). There is presently nothing on the KamaHapa domain name because we need the operating funds for a website. So if you like what you see at Kickstarter, contribute towards one of our value-added rewards. At the scheduled date of the reward, we will send you an email with instructions on how to get your reward. That means we will need your email, if you want the reward.
If we all had to consider risks every time we go to sleep, who then would want to wake up!
Have a question? If the info above doesn't help, you can ask the project creator directly.
