In early 2000, I was finally fed up with the weight loss roller coaster I had been riding for most of my life. I had just given birth to my second son at the end of the previous year and was desperate to lose the weight that had caused several health challenges – including two troubled pregnancies, difficult deliveries, and compromised immunity.
I set out to make positive, sustainable changes:

While remaining active in my community and church.
While raising two small children.
I was busy, but I knew I had 168 hours in every week, and so did the successful 20%. Some of the changes I made had to do with time management and clear action plans to achieve my health goals without neglecting other goals.
I challenged my body and my mind. I fed my family healthy meals on a limited budget with limited time. I organized a consistent workout plan around my work and family schedule.
Meanwhile, I was promoted to a new job with more responsibility. And I kept succeeding, at work and at weight loss.
When all was said and done, I logged a loss of over 50 pounds and 6 dress sizes, and I slashed my body fat percentage in half. I had changed my body and my life, and decided to change my career path so that I could help others do the same.
But I was a graphics designer with no background or knowledge besides my own experience. The first order of business was education and certification. On top of my full family and work life.
After earning certifications as a personal trainer and group fitness instructor, my husband and I decided the time was right for me to go back to college. With my children in elementary school, I quit my job and enrolled full-time in classes, starting my science education from scratch, and effectively doubling my workload.
A decade later, I had earned a Bachelor’s degree in biology/biochemistry and a Master’s degree in human nutrition. I had also gained rich research experience, a deep understanding of time management and goal-achieving strategies, and a vision of how I wanted to help others create their own transformation.

How the Planner Has Evolved
The first Healthy Habits System™ workbook and four-week planner was put together from my fitness and nutrition expertise as a reference for a few clients. I made the document – spreads and all – in Microsoft Word, converted it to a .pdf, and uploaded it to a print-on-demand website. It was, to put it lightly, very rudimentary.
My clients learned a lot from it and loved using it as a reference and goal-setting tool. I began hearing how it inspired them to make goals for themselves, to recognize their worth as individuals, and to see how much they deserved to live a vibrant and healthy lifestyle. When they started succeeding with it, I realized I had something that many others needed, and I needed a way to get it to them.
Those few clients joined a group of beta-testers that worked through the second iteration of the Healthy Habits System™ Workbook + Four-Week Planner, meeting for feedback sessions and asking many clarifying questions that helped me refine the content. We began integrating the psychology behind goal achieving and productivity, to make it a comprehensive planner – not just for your fitness journey, but for all your life. “You have one life, you need one planner.”
And while the second iteration was much better – it’s what you see in the video – the Healthy Habits System™ Workbook + Four-Week Planner was joined by the 90-Day Planner, and has become so much more. Now the planners include:

reflection and goal-setting exercises to help you refine your vision for all your goals – fitness and otherwise
the addition of DO to The System, which teaches you how to use the planner system to maximize productivity and progress toward your big life goals

Stretch Goals and Future Plans
While I am in love with the 8.5x11 format, I realize that many prefer a smaller form factor. If we 10x our funding goal of $10,000 by raising at least $100,000, we will offer existing backers the option of a smaller format (likely 5x9 or A5), which will more easily fit into your purse or smaller bag. You'll get an email before your product ships asking for your preference.
Plans are being made for follow-up products, integrating the powerful Healthy Habits System with tracking and productivity techniques customized to specialized populations and situations. If these product innovations excite you, back this project now to ensure we can make them.
Risks and challenges
Obvious risks involve shipping time and fulfillment. Additional risks include variations in the planners’ features. We have designed a planner with tab dividers, back pocket, and elastic closure, which may be challenging to our printers. Therefore, it is possible that the delivered planner, while still delivering its powerful content, will be lacking these elements.
My specialization in graphics design was printed materials, and I am experienced in dealing with printers, from communicating specific requirements, to facilitating expedited product receipt and fulfillment to customers. While the aforementioned risks exist, my experience equips me to deal with and overcome them, to make sure you get your planners, undamaged and on time.
