If you love great quality art, enticing scenes of action, adventure, mystery, humor and intrigue, then please check out the Xtreme Champion Tournament.
So what exactly is the Xtreme Champion Tournament?
Format: Standard comic, full colour, 24 pages, Issue #1 of an ongoing series, limited to 2500 standard copies, 500 incentive cover copies and 100 sketch cover copies.
Synopsis: In the year 2069, what has been uncovered in secret archaeological digs, transpiring over the last 50 years are going to rock the foundation of what we all believe. The remains of heroes, villains, monsters and creatures, that have long been believed to be myth or legend have been found. The remains have been used to create clones. These clones are caged, retrained and forced to fight in the most brutal sport in the world, the "Xtreme Champion Tournament". This has become the most watched sport in history, and sees cloned fighters pitted against each other, as well as well known mythical creatures, for entertainment purposes.
Introduction: In Issue 0 we saw the death and rebirth of Spartacus. Issue 1 picks up right where the last issue left off. Spartacus has been cloned and is now forced to fight a Minotaur. Can Spartacus overcome this destructive force or will his life end just as quickly as it has begun? In this issue the reader is introduced to Oscar Keenan, the owner of XCT and a much older Dr Stein, who's motives for resurrecting Spartacus are a mystery.
Without Kickstarter I would not be able to produce a project like this on my own. By taking this route, I have a creator owned comic book that other wise wouldn't have been made. I have already gone as far as I can on my own, and now need a helping hand from the comic book and Kickstarter community. Using Kickstarter to self publish this series also gives me creative freedom without the restrictions of a big comic book publisher. Using this campaign, I also hope to gauge the interest in the book and see if an ongoing series would be successful. If you would like to see the comic book completed and an ongoing series then please make a pledge.
What your support does: All money raised will go directly towards Xtreme Champion Tournament production and promotion costs and to give backers some awesome rewards!
Production and Promotion costs include:
- Paying the printing and shipping costs of Posters & Prints
- Paying the printing and shipping costs of Comics
- Paying of expenses for other Promotional Material
What we hope: With Issue #0 being super successful in Australia we hope to expand on our fan base into other countries. We will be attending conventions in both France and New Zealand over the next couple of months, as well getting Issue #0 distributed by Diamond. With your help this series can become self sufficient, producing issues quarterly.
Whats in it for you?
We have tried to think "outside the box" when it comes to incentives for backing this campaign and we think we have come up with some awesome ideas.
Firstly, we have been lucky enough to have Spartacus (Liam McIntyre from the Starz series) do a signing for us to promote and support this campaign. Some of the items signed include prints and posters (standard comic cover and Carlos Herrera image below) as well as a small amount of Issue #0 comics.
Below are some images of Liam McIntyre, Manu Bennett and Dan Feuerriegel from the STARZ series "Spartacus". They are signing, reading and providing selfies. The actors have been extremely supportive of the series and are right behind this next issue!
"Xtreme Champion Tournament: Spartacus is everything I wanted it to be. Badass, Brutal & Bloody!" - Dan Feuerriegel
We have some very cool head sketches by Jerry Gaylord for those people that get in early and pick the head sketch reward. Limited to only 5 so be quick as they won't last long.
We also have a bunch of original pages straight out of the comic up for grabs. Below is what the inked pages will look like. We have 5 pages up for grabs and these will make a awesome display for your wall or another great piece to add to your artwork collection.
Other incentives include prints of Spartacus and some other characters out of the series. These prints have been drawn by some awesome artists that include Royce Sutherland, Chris McQuinlan, Dave Atze, Jerry Gaylord, Mike Bowden and Carlos Herrera. We also have a few other prints by some other awesome artist's that will be unlocked as stretch goals.
Some other rewards we have include having your own likeness in the series, create your own monster to have in later issues and even the Original artwork for the cover to this issue by Jerry Gaylord.
We haven't forgotten about our retailers/artists/small businesses who also have the opportunity for advertising space in the comic book or a super reduced rate for a bunch of copies of both XCT issues #0 and #1.
The final reward is one of three statues of Spartacus. The statue is based off the first cover and each one is 11" tall, hand painted and is finished off to the highest quality. These are extremely limited statues and are a must for any Spartacus fan.
The locker room is a new place in the back of each issue of XCT which gives you, the fans, a chance to have your say about the series. It will include reviews, letters, ideas & feedback from the fans and responses from our two XCT presenters Tom and Joe.
We really want all the readers to feel apart of the XCT universe and this is a unique way to correspond with our fans. Starting with Issue #2 we will give one lucky fan the chance to be interviewed by Tom and Joe. If you want to be the first all you need to do is purchase the Locker Room reward.
We are also super excited to announce that on the 11th of October we will be having a product Launch of the Xtreme Champion Tournament Issue #1 at the Eisner Award Winning store All Star Comics, Level 1/410 Lonsdale Street, Melbourne. Both Brendan Halyday and myself will be in attendance signing everyone's copies of XCT for free, we will also have a bunch of cool items for sale, will be holding a raffle for an original piece of artwork out of the Issue, signed items from Liam McIntyre and store vouchers within All Star Comics.
The event will also have a couple of cosplayers on the day. They will be dressed as some characters out of the series and will be happy to take some pictures with everyone that comes along. To top it all off we even have some artists that will be in attendance to provide sketches on some of those blank covers we are offering as rewards.
It'll be a great day out for everyone and we hope to see as many backers there as possible!!
Myself (Shaun Paulet) creator of the XCT universe and basic story line.
Brendan Halyday is an great Australian talent that specializes in illustrating, design and writing and has done an awesome job scripting & editing this book as well as providing all the polish.
Jerry Gaylord has burst onto the scene with Fanboys Vs Zombies and Loki:Ragnarok and Roll by BOOM! Studios. We are super lucky to have Jerry on board this project with his super tight pencils and great action scenes. Jerry was also nominated for the Harvey Award for best new talent, so you know his artwork is going to rock.
We are also super excited to announce that Jerry has signed on for issue 2 of XCT out Jan/Feb next year!
Penny Gaylord has done a great job inking this issue and has worked on books such as Fanboys Vs Zombies, Loki:Ragnarok and Roll and Soulfire. She is a proud member of the Identity Comics Studio and does a lot to promote women in comics.
Wilson Go has jumped on the book to do colours for this issue and has done a fantastic job in making all the characters jump right off the page and hit you in the face.

Risks and challenges
The delivery date for almost all rewards will be in mid October of 2014. After the campaign is over, I'll be keeping everyone up to date on the printing schedules for the book and all the rewards as we go along.
With the pencil, ink and colour illustrations already done, all that's left is the design/layout work for the interior of the book. The turnaround on printing for the books is about 2-3 weeks and will be done during this campaign, once received packing and shipping all those cool rewards will take about 2-3 weeks to action.
You know how nothing in life EVER goes perfectly smooth, right? Well, just to give you all a heads up, if there are shipment schedule issues or challenges with the printers, or those pesky day-to-day challenges, I know how to stick it out, get the work done, make it look great and meet those deadlines! I have done it before and will do it again!!
I believe that transparency is key in a venture like this, so again, I'll be keeping everyone informed as we make our way through this fun project. Thanks for all your support.
