About

THE ELECT is a fast-paced humorous card game of politics, elections, and the monsters which populate them.

The object of the game is to be the first player to match your Candidate's priorities to that of the Political Climate established at the start of the game - or to be the last viable Candidate in the race.

THE ELECT is designed for 2 to 5 players, ages 14+. Average playing time is 45 to 90 minutes. Time to learn the game is ~15 minutes.

In order to win, Players must use their resources and skill to adjust their Candidate’s priorities to be the first to match that of the Political Climate, all the while gathering influence and attempting to stave off bankruptcy or political disaster.

The Political Climate is comprised of 9 Issue Categories, ranked from most important (1) to least important (9)

If a player runs out of money, influence, or the ability to conduct an action on their turn - they are out of the game.

The game consists of 200 cards, comprised of Candidates, Debates, Development Cards, Events, Interest Groups, Political Climates, Special Interests, Staff, and Voters.

All of the artwork has been hand drawn by Alan Caudel.

While the game is easy to learn and play, it can be quite challenging to win.

During a player's turn, they have a set number of Actions they can use. Most candidates start with 2 actions. Actions stack, so actions earned are ADDED to whatever number of actions a player already has, and actions lost are subtracted; if a player ever has 0 or negative actions available to them at the start of their turn, they are immediately out of the game.

Players may use their Actions to either: (1) play a card, (2) buy/sell or spend influence points, or (3) draw/take a card.

Some cards serve double duty in the game and have an illustration of currency on the card-back, as they may be used to fulfill the function listed on them OR they may be used as money to purchase influence or access. Throughout the game, players vie to increase their wealth and influence while navigating sudden and unexpected challenges brought about chance and by their opponents.

In addition to attempting to undermine their opponents, players must also position themselves to perform well in the scheduled Debates - as performing poorly will limit their ability to grow their influence and wealth.

Influence and wealth are used to re-position a Candidate's priorities to match the active Political Climate. As a result, it's impossible to win without them - unless a player can cause all their other opponents to suffer such misfortune that they must fall out of the race before a winner is declared.

In addition to earning Influence points in Debates, Influence may also be earned from certain cards in the deck or purchased on the open market.

There are a set number of Debates in each game (as determined by the number of players). If the last Debate card is drawn before a player matches the Political Climate, the player with the most influence is declared the winner.

$15,000. At 15K, we will replace the die-cut Influence tokens with red and white ACRYLIC GEMS.

$17,500. At 17.5K, we will add a custom-made "The Elect" CAMPAIGN PIN to your reward(s). These pins will only be produced for this Kickstarter campaign (i.e. Kickstarter Exclusive).

$20,000. At 20K, we will add begin introducing ADDITIONAL CANDIDATES to the game. These candidates will produced exclusively for this Kickstarter campaign, influenced by backer input. They will be packaged separately from the core game.

Alan Caudel is the Deputy Creative Director for Drawn from Valor, a 501(c)(3) non-profit which creates artwork, animation, and games to help children more easily understand complex issues. He is presently working on The Tales of the Golden Acorn, designed to help children in families impacted by PTSD to better understand and live with those impacts.

He is an incredible talent and we are incredibly lucky to have him working with us.

It helps quite a bit that his wife and infant child seem to support him in this (at least, we think they do; he hasn't seemed any more sleep-deprived than any of the other new parents we know). It also helps that he absolutely loves games. From more recent tabletop games such as Exploding Kittens, to slightly older games such as Machi Koro, Ticket To Ride and Settlers of Catan, he is a huge fan. He also has a passion for retro video games. In fact, he still has a functioning Atari 2600, a Nintendo NES and a Sega Genesis (we kid you not).

HOW IT ALL CAME ABOUT

In 2015, I was browsing through social media, home of open and friendly discourse, when I saw an advert for a Cthulhu-themed shirt with the caption: "Why Vote for the Lesser Evil?".

After chuckling a bit and hoping (in vain) that one of my friends would buy me the shirt as a present, I started wondering if Cthulhu really would be the greater evil in the upcoming election. Suffice it to say, I've spent entirely too much time thinking about this.

That got me to thinking about what interest groups Cthulhu might appeal to. Or a Witch. Or the friendly yet stoic Garden Gnome. One thing led to another and an early version of The Elect was born.

A very very bad early version. Mind-numbingly boring and entirely too long to boot (not a great combination). The early consensus was that playing the game might be the greatest evil yet.

It's fair to say I was crushed. However, after chatting with some friends (yes, the same folks who failed to get me the awesome shirt), a plan emerged: Create a game that didn't suck.

That "plan" wasn't as useful a road-map as one might wish for. However, after many months of tooling and re-tooling, a fun game did emerge. Then it was play-tested some more and eventually a fun, good game emerged.

So it is with heartfelt THANKS to all of our play-testers - from the early friends and family to the total strangers at various gaming groups and conventions - that Alan and I give you The Elect.

We hope you enjoy playing it.

Why Kickstarter?

Kickstarter provides us with flexibility. Flexibility to print the best game, and flexibility to reward supporters like yourself who make that possible. Game production is subject to economies of scale, so the more games we produce, the less costly it is to manufacture on a per unit basis.

After we reach our goal, we start working towards those economies of scale savings and the deluxe version improvements - and Kickstarter provides us with the flexibility to add those improvements as Stretch Rewards at no additional cost to you.

Lastly, but certainly not least, Kickstarter provides us with a platform to reach YOU. While we DO have one published game under our belt (a free print-and-play which can be found on BGG here), we aren't a well-established game publisher with distribution contracts or anything like that. We love games - both designing and playing them - and we are well versed in manufacturing and logistics, but our ability to reach folks is limited. Kickstarter helps us overcome that. So, thank you, for being part of the Kickstarter community and for making all of this possible.

F.A.Q.

Q: Why is the Early Bird pledge level so much less than the Base Game level?

A: Once those Early Bird pledge commitments are made, we have enough to print the base game using a well-established and reputable manufacturer. We wanted to thank those Early Birds for their early and vital support by offering them the deeply discounted pledge level which transforms our game from concept to reality.

Risks and challenges

As with any game production, there are risks. We have a LOT of artwork in the game, to say nothing of the manufacturing or fulfillment processes. We've ample experience though and have prepared for the risks thoroughly.

ARTWORK. We have a lot of experience with this. Alan has been working on the artwork for months; he's talented and prolific and he should be done with the remaining artwork by the end of the year. Not to be overconfident, we've worked cushion into our schedule to ensure we can deliver your rewards on time. Then we added some more cushion to be extra safe. This isn't our first rodeo.

MANUFACTURING. We're using an experienced and reputable USA-based game manufacturer to produce THE ELECT. They have a well established reputation in the business and we chose them in part so we can be confident in the quality of their work and the timeliness of the production.

FULFILLMENT. Shipping can be a challenge, no doubt about it. It's costly and time-consuming. Shipments can be lost or delayed despite the best planning. We've done everything we can to minimize the risk: (1) We've run the numbers to ensure we raise enough to ship your rewards, (2) Each shipment will have tracking and insurance. If you've an issue, contact us and we'll get to the bottom of it and get you a response - hopefully within 24 hours.

A frustrating aspect of crowdfunding can be the communication - or lack of it. That WON'T be a risk here. We'll post regular updates through the time funding ends, up until your rewards are shipped. If you send us an email at <info@culturlan.com> or through Kickstarter, we'll work hard to get you a response within 24 hours (and hopefully sooner than that).

Thanks for your support!

    MONEY IN POLITICS

As a hat tip to our political process, we are offering this opportunity to those who want to provide a tangible example of the role money plays in politics.

    Ensure your words are heard!

Backers at this level will work with our designer and artist to create a Candidate card shaped according to their desire (subject to some restrictions regarding content and game-balance). This card will be included in every version of The Elect.

Backers at this level will also receive 12 copies of the game + the signed original print of their candidate card + our possibly entirely too short-lived gratitude. They will also be provided with the number to a private line, which they can use to contact us at any time regarding rules clarifications (for 5K, we may even answer).
