Who are we?
The Shreveport Metropolitan Ballet, founded in 1973, is one of our community's oldest continuously-operating arts organizations. We produce a season of 4-5 classical ballet performances each year, and conduct free arts education outreach activities that reach over 9,000 citizens in Shreveport and Bossier City, Louisiana. Our Company includes approximately 40 talented local dancers who are chosen by open audition each spring, and we also provide performance opportunities for hundreds of younger dancers (ages 5-10) in our full-length ballets. We bring professional guest artists to Shreveport and utilize local professional musicians to provide live accompaniment whenever possible. Our mission is to educate the community in the art of classical ballet, and we continually search for innovative ways to accomplish this goal.
What are we doing?
On April 21, 2013, the Shreveport Metropolitan Ballet will bring the delightful production The Tales of Beatrix Potter to the stage at Shreveport's Riverview Theater. Shreveport audiences are eagerly awaiting the chance to watch some of their favorite Beatrix Potter characters come to life in The Tales of Beatrix Potter, which was originally created as a ballet film for England's Royal Ballet in 1971. A cast of over 100 talented local dancers will grace the stage as Ducks, Mice, Hedgehogs, Flowers, Butterflies, Bunnies, Pigs, and Frogs. The dancers have auditioned for their roles and started rehearsal in early January 2013. Transforming our dancers into these beloved childhood characters will require us to purchase and create dozens of brand-new costumes, masks, and props that are not currently a part of SMB's costume inventory. Luckily, we have an AMAZING team of volunteer seamstresses who work tirelessly to create visual magic on stage - you can check out some of their past creations in our video. We have also located a great online source for custom masks that will help to bring our vision to life. Take a peek here!
Why do we need your help?
Though we try to economize whenever possible, creating costumes for an entirely new ballet is expensive! Custom masks, material, trim, headpieces, elastic, sewing supplies - this list expands as our creative vision for the ballet soars but is often reigned in by the realities of available funds. But what if everyone who visited this campaign just purchased a yard of Jeremy Fisher's jacket material, a spool of thread for the stitching in Jemima Puddleduck's cap, or a pair of tights to be worn by a five year old making her ballet debut as a Flower? Voila! You get a beautifully-costumed new ballet that can enter SMB's permanent repertoire and an audience transported into the world of beloved children's tales, all thanks to the collaborative efforts of an engaged, diverse community of individuals who appreciate and support the performing arts.

Risks and challenges
Costuming a new ballet always presents risks and challenges, but SMB has nearly 40 years of experience in anticipating and overcoming setbacks.
The biggest challenge in a project of this magnitude is, of course, funding - but we are taking care of that issue with this Kickstarter campaign and are confident that our many supporters and new friends will help us meet our goal!
After the project is funded, it is probable that we will encounter problems such as temporary unavailability of material or supplies or technical problems with sewing machines. However, these are issues that arise during every performance season and our experienced sewing crew will meet them with flexibility and creativity.
We may also find that the custom masks we order will take longer than expected to produce and arrive. This is always a risk when an item is ordered from an outside producer rather than created in-house, but we have absolute confidence that our costume volunteers can step in and fill in the gaps if necessary. We do not anticipate any problems, though, and can't wait to see our dancers onstage in these amazing masks and beautiful new costumes!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
