Boris MacBoar and the folks at 500 BC proudly present our first Kickstarter.
Greetings, Kickstarters! This is the ‘new’ 500 BC, but our mission is as old as mankind: Who am I? Why am I here? What is my unique purpose on Earth? What do I need right now to meet the challenges in my life?
Scientists agree that it is good for the brain to move away from surface-level, uninspired, predictable thinking and push past the obvious. That's why we're here. Move over IQ, EQ, FQ.* Welcome to ‘UQ’ – the You Quotient – which inspired 500 BC’s Ancient Game of You, a fun, stimulating game that feeds your quest to live better.
The challenge? Bombarded with information all day, every day, somehow the real issues are rarely addressed. Maybe it’s time to heed Socrates’ warning (albeit, 2500 years later)...
“Beware the barrenness of a busy life.”
Enter 500 BC, your personal pause button. Much more than a game,
500 BC is an online platform designed to give you what you need to be your best self, right now. We’re here to help you take a break, lighten up, laugh. All while finding authentic answers and ancient connections that feed and strengthen your body and soul.
500 BC puts you at the heart of a great mystery unfolding—daily quests where you can learn more about yourself and gain a renewed sense of confidence to go after what you really want in life, with help and guidance from the great voices of the ages.
Just 7% of all humans who have ever lived are alive right now—and some days, it feels like they’re all in your merge lane. Why fight your way out of life’s challenges as if no one has ever been here? Why not benefit from the wisdom of the 93% who came before us?
By tapping into the vast reservoir of human thought from across time, including your own ancestors, our proprietary ancient knowledge algorithm provides unique and personalized wisdom and insights unavailable anywhere else.
Some describe 500 BC as a personal mojo booster. We think it’s about living life “full boar.”
It’s time to battle the things that make us really bristly…
- An always connected lifestyle that leaves us feeling more disconnected than ever before.
- Too many “Likes”… and not enough liking ourselves.
- Rampant over-seriousness, self-importance and the need to always be right.
- All talk + no listen = no fun.
- Disconnected from the wisdom and cultural traditions of our ancestors.
- A lack of connection to our own true, instinctual selves.
Of course you can count on Boris, the official 500 BC spokes-boar, for help along the way. The boar was an ancient symbol of courage, self-reliance, protection, spiritual strength and tenacity. In times long gone, boar symbols were given only to those considered fierce warriors. Boris will seek to inspire, or at the very least entertain, your own inner warrior as you embark on your daily quest.
After 12 months of testing and refining our algorithm on the web, we’re ready to bring the power of 500 BC to the mobile space through development of the iOS and Android apps. We need your help to make 500 BC’s Game of You mobile app and our quest of restoring global mojo a reality!
How 500 BC Works: You begin by completing a baseline profile. Daily quizzes analyzed through the 500 BC algorithm will help you figure out what you need in the moment based on your highs and lows across eight core measures:
The point here is for you to take the measure of you. Gain personalized insights to guide you on your own personal quest. After all, life is not a spectator sport.
“Everything that can be counted does not necessarily count;
everything that counts cannot necessarily be counted.”
Game LevelsThere are five primary levels of the game, each with specific objectives and wisdom feedback -- all designed to spark your imagination and work that great brain in a way that is fun, intriguing, but never pompous or boring. ('Boaring'? Well, duh.)
Why 500 BC?
We’re glad you asked. 500 BC was the pinnacle of the Axial Age, when some of history’s greatest thinkers and civilizations emerged and changed the world. Confucius, Pythagoras, the Buddha, Socrates, Plato, Lao Tzu, Sun Tzu and Aesop to name a few. It was the Golden Age of Greece and the Persian Empire. An era that birthed the Roman Empire.
What do the Celts of Europe, Olmecs and Mayans of the Americas, Nok of Africa, Scythians of Asia, Shintos of Japan, and Hebrew Old Testament writers all have in common? They all made their mark in and around 500 BC.
To the great thinkers of 500 BC, everything was connected--the mind, body, spirit, Earth and cultural roots. Over time, those connections have become frayed and in some cases, lost altogether. At 500 BC, we believe we are poorer – mentally, physically and emotionally – as a result.
500 BC is about restoring resilience and helping you get back to what’s real and important in life. Hint: It’s not about ‘shares’ and ‘retweets’. It is about having the confidence and courage to take charge and take action.
You and the real world need each other. It really is time to live life “full boar.”
500 BC’s look is based on the work of acclaimed California artist, Tom Gehrig. Tom’s painting is our home page and his stacked stones guide your navigation. Tom’s work is renowned for its surreal imagery that is rich in symbolism and metaphor.
On the surface his art is reflective and romantic... then he zaps you with the unexpected. Do you like it? Then Boris applauds your appreciation of irony, metaphor, paradox and your absurd sense of humor. You’ll fit right in here.
The Origins of (the new) 500 BC
What do you get when you combine comparative religious studies and the teachings of Carl Jung, Joseph Campbell, and James Burke with ancestry, gaming and an epic battle against cancer? The key ingredients that form the foundations of the newly envisioned 500 BC.
Founder O’Faolain’s life took an unexpected detour when she learned that her youngest child had a rare, aggressive cancer. After a brutal few years, this child is wonderfully healthy thanks to the best of eastern and western medicine, a rigorous focus on whole-body health, and the support of countless amazing people along the way. From that dark time came the desire to share some of the light the family received by building a brand and a company with the help of a world-class team of technologists, researchers, historians, storytellers and artists.
Enough about our origins - this really is all about you. Boris, the bristly wild boar and the entire 500 BC team are all very glad you are here. We ask that you learn, laugh (whenever possible) then log off. Here, your personal growth is the ultimate prize. The real world needs more of you. Grab your mojo by the horns and live life “full boar.”
back us on Kickstarter? For starters, Boris and the 500 BC team
feel a real kinship with the Kickstarter community. We both love play, art,
shaking things up in a good way—and we’re guessing mud baths, too, but that is
getting a bit personal.
We have been working on this in stealth mode for a long time, and now it is time to help many, many people get their mojo back. Our mobile app is the way to do this.
Many thanks to the Kickstarter community for making this kind of fundraising effort even possible for a small company with a big idea that comes from the very best place: the heart. We have traveled through the valley of death, and emerged with a mission to help others find what they need to battle life's daily battles—without sappiness, smugness or self importance; we prefer tusks, history and humor to aid healing. An incredible amount of research, thinking and hard work has gotten us here, yet we are just getting started. We will use every dollar pledged to deliver the best greatest possible product to help all Kickstarters and beyond ‘Live Life Full Boar!’

Risks and challenges
500 BC has launched on the web with deep content and a clear, compelling product roadmap. We have a star team and big plans, but there is always a risk that something could go wrong along the way. However, we are confident in our ability to create a global movement of living life “full boar.”
Our experienced team has a strong track record of building worldwide brands that make an impact. Our data architects, developers, researchers artists and storytellers are among the best anywhere and our algorithm has been continuously tested and refined over the last 12 months. We will continue to put heart, soul, blood, sweat and tears into building out the vision and delivering on our promise of restoring global mojo.
A note from our lawyers: Boris has never been to medical school (no opposable thumbs) and 500 BC does not offer medical advice. We’re here to light a spark so that you take better care of yourself. Listen to your instincts; if you have health concerns, call your doctor and make Hippocrates proud. This father of Western medicine is from, you guessed it, 500 BC (460 -370 BC) to be exact.
Primary risks are as follows:
1) 500 BC is largely unknown in its large markets of gaming, wellness and social, another reason why we're here asking for your help. We will work tirelessly to spread the word, but Boris and the team appreciate any help you can offer by telling your friends, family and tribes.
2) We anticipate strong global demand, so are concerned about our multiple language translations speed-to-market. Our first non-English apps are expected by August 2014, but we can move faster with Kickstarter’s help (see stretch goals).
From everyone at 500 BC, we thank the Kickstarter community for your help and support to deliver on our plan at full speed.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
