About

Click on the banner above to be directed to a fully playable demo for both Mac and PC, if you'd like to give it a spin! We will be updating the demo throughout our campaign, so check back every now and then and let us know what you think!

Funk Unplugged is a 3D platformer unlike anything you’ve seen before… yet very much like what you’ve seen before, in all the right ways. A love letter to the golden age of N64 platforming games, Funk Unplugged has it all: bright, colorful worlds to discover, challenging platforming puzzles, a bumpin’ soundtrack, and oodles of collectibles (obviously). Play as Ampy and harness otherworldly powers to alter the world around you, creating new and unique paths to tread as you leap ever onward to save the day, and also… our ears. (Not bad for a little blue box, huh?)

Funk Unplugged is currently planned to release on PC and Xbox One and is scheduled to be released early in April 2017.

Funk Unplugged is planned to include 6 worlds each with a set of levels indicative of its environment. These levels will range from sunny beaches filled with sand and giant enemy crabs to futuristic cities chalk full of fast cars and holograms.

This the heck is an Ampy.
This the heck is an Ampy.

The latest in sonic amplification technology, Ampy started life as a regular ol' amplifier. Passed from band to band, both world-famous and garage-bound, Ampy just simply loved to play. To Ampy, music was everything. However, there's only so much touring a little amplifier can do before it's time to rest the circuits. Settling down on a tranquil little island, Ampy got ready to enjoy retirement playing soft music for the local wildlife and finding a new sound with a group of easy-listening beach bums.

Things aren't sunshine and sandy toes for our little hero, however. Left on the beach one afternoon, Ampy believes its days of blastin’ sweet tunes for the people are over, only to find everything changed with the arrival of a strange spacecraft. Ampy is brought to life by Feedbac, a quirky, ethereal being who investigates intergalactic sound transmissions. Troubled by the sounds coming from Ampy’s home planet, Feedbac came to check it out firsthand- and things are worse than first imagined. The vile, ne’er-do-well Evil Records has established a presence on the planet and are trying to spread bad vibes with their newest, worst band yet: The G-Men. Feedbac fuses with Ampy, bringing the formerly-defunct amplifier back to life and bestowing strange, wonderful, alien powers to combat the nefarious influence of the G-Men and their garbage music. Go forth and save the world as Ampy, funkier than ever and fully unplugged!

Protip: Run away from loose boulders!
Protip: Run away from loose boulders!

Funk Unplugged is planned to include 6 worlds each with a set of various levels within that are extensions of the overworld environment. These levels will range from sunny beaches filled with sand and giant crabs, to futuristic cities chock full of fast cars and holograms, to spooky scary castles pulsing with sick beats and secrets.

Prospective levels include:

Ballad Beach - A once peaceful beachfront has been turned upside down by the coming of the G-Men. The beach is a mess, the world-famous lighthouse in shambles and the once peaceful sea life turned deadly!
Musical Theme - Surfer Rock

Arctic Aria - Far away in the Great North, the G-Men's botched concert has stirred something ancient in the mystical ice caves of the Arctic Aria. High in the mountains, primeval creatures stir, while down below the local inhabitants spread word that an ancient hero walks the Earth once again.
Musical Theme - Cold Classical

The Jungle of Cleft Island - Deep in the Jungle of Cleft island lies an ancient ruin of unimaginable power. There, a nefarious plot by Evil Records unfolds. Tapping into ancient powers. the ruins have come alive pouring bad vibes into the once tranquil surrounding land. The locals fear their old gods will return, and some say strange and ancient creatures now roam the jungle.
Musical theme - Adventure Music

Lord Beatoven's Castle - In the deep dark of the Treble Woods lies a long abandoned castle once ruled by one of the greatest musicians of all time. Rife with hidden paths and dark corners, this castle holds its share of terrible and dark secrets. For decades the castle has lain dormant, its secrets kept safe behind its stone walls. But recent events have opened these halls once more and Evil Records has moved in, preying on the powerful musical secrets within.
Musical Theme - So Spooky

Balladwood Studios - Balladwood Studios has a long tradition of making some of the greatest musical films ever created. That was, of course, until Evil Records moved in. Now Balladwood churns out some of the most generic, trite garbage ever conceived and these films are now the source of Evil Record's great power on Earth. Some say they may even be more than just films, but of course that's just rumor... right?Musical Theme - Varied

New Tempo City - New Tempo City was once the greatest city in all the world, a shining gem filled with lights, technology, and music as far as as could see and ears could hear. When Evil Records opened a headquarters within this great city, something about the populace changed. Holographic police now patrol the streets and any music not approved by Evil Records has been outlawed. They say there are some who still would stand against Evil Record's vile rule, but who among them could have that kind of power?
Musical Theme - Techno Funk

Our hope is to create unique worlds that each feel and sound different from one another. We hope to recapture the feeling of exploring strange and intriguing environments, foraying bravely into worlds unknown to save the day and have a great time doing it!

Above is a simple breakdown of where pledged funds will be allocated. 49% will be spent on acquiring necessary software needed for building Funk Unplugged to its full potential; 37% will be spent ensuring that the Vamped Games team has an adequate work space as well as hardware maintenance; and the final 14% will be spent making sure that you, our lovely lovely backers, receive all the rewards promised as a thank you for your generous contributions!

So who are the people that so desperately want to make this game for you lovely folks? Well, let's introduce you to our magnificent team of DePaul University graduates right now!

Andre Gracias is the executive producer of Funk Unplugged! He is responsible for guiding all members of Vamped Games team through the development process and being an all-around great guy with magnificent hair.

Dillon Wallace

Dillon Wallace is the level designer for Funk Unplugged! He's been hard at work developing levels for the game and filling them with all kinds of neat stuff. In his spare time, he can be found eating chicken fingers and doting on his cat.

Elliott Cox

Elliott Cox is the sound engineer for Funk Unplugged! Almost everything you hear while playing the game, Elliott made! From soundtrack to sound effects, this guy can (and does) do it all. And before you ask, his mixtape is so fire it straight up self-immolated.

We at Vamped Games would also like to extend a special thank you to Ray Bach (animation), Rebecca Smith (concept art), Wolf Romero (also concept art), and Joel Rodriguez (also also concept art) for lending their talents to the development of Funk Unplugged. Risks and challenges

Much of the development of Funk Unplugged has been a learning process for all of us, and there’s still much we have yet to learn. However, we like to think of that as an asset, rather than a hindrance. We come at development with many sets of fresh eyes and young, creative minds. Part of what makes a great game, we think, is visualizing innovation and figuring out how to pull it off. We’re young, we’re adaptable, and we’re passionate. We just need a little help spreading our wings and getting off the ground. It’s going to take time and work, and pitfalls are inevitable in any creative endeavor, but this project is something we all care deeply about and love wholeheartedly. We at Vamped want to succeed, as a team, but we also want to succeed in bringing an awesome game to life so the rest of the world can enjoy it as well.
