About this project
On April 7 - 9, 2017, mezzo-soprano Jennifer Blades will present the US premier of "Love Songs" by Serbian-Canadian composer Ana Sokolovic. This one woman, a capella monodrama sets the composers favorite poems in English, Serbian, French, Latin, and Gaelic. The poems are connected by what the composer calls "doves": whisperings of "I love you" in 100 different languages.
We are asking for your consideration and support in order to make this dream of an important premier, promoting love, a reality.
"Love Songs is an opera-for-one, a spectacularly virtuosic tour de force for solo female singer. While most composers fixate on romantic love, Ana flings open the door to include love for one’s mother, love between children, love for a daughter, love shattered by grief and most harrowingly, love for a lost brother. The audience is carried through all the dizzying states of love, beginning with utmost tenderness right through to the final profound, wild and cathartic Balkan keening. The composer’s music goes far beyond traditional operatic use of the voice...Poets include Michael Hartnett, Paul Éluard, Émile Nelligan, Vasko Popa, Miroslav Antic, Elizabeth Barrett Browning, Shakespeare, Catulle, Walt Whitman and Amarusataka."
Your generous support will go towards the rights for the piece itself and to the composer, mezzo-soprano, artists, and necessary marketing and promotion that this piece requires and deserves.
"Love Songs" will be presented at the Baltimore Theatre Project on April 7 - 9, 2017.

Risks and challenges
We are starting this campaign well in advance of the April performances to ensure that we have the funding we need to put together this U.S. premier. With your help, we can fully purchase the rights, purchase supplies we need for set design, costuming, and make sure that we get the word out about this spectacular piece.
As professional musicians and artists, we will work hard to embody this piece in its complexity.
We are also very fortunate for our partnership with the Baltimore Theatre Project, which provides us an incredible performance space.
The challenges facing us are only in making sure that we can pay the highly qualified creative team and, of course, securing the rights of the music from composer Ana Sokolovic, who is incredibly excited at the prospect of these performances.
With your generous support, we have the ability to take our craft to its highest potential and to share this journey with you on April 7 - 9, 2017!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
