ABOUT THE PROJECT
"All Your Base Are Belong To Us" takes place in a future world where the most precious commodity is the ability to gain mastery over other people's minds and operate them as pawns. The title is a famous and grammatically incorrect English translation of a line from a Japanese video game and will play a factor in the plot.
The MacGuffin of the film is "Columbian Devil's Breath," a street drug derived from the organic root Datura flower, which causes a complete loss of inhibition and consciousness. Government scientists developed it for psychological treatment of criminals, as a way to "reverse engineer" their behavior, but it slipped between the cracks and became available on the black market. When the drug is combined with advancements in biotechnology, it turns ordinary civilians into criminals without any trace back to them.
The story focuses on a man programmed to work for one of the underground crime lords eager to take control of the drug supply. As he gains awareness of his plight, and learns of the drug's sinister potential, he takes matters into his own hands....
ABOUT THE FILMMAKERS

Russ Russo (Actor) - star of "Against the Wall," has appeared in numerous films, including well-regarded indie dramas "The Projectionist" and "Blue Collar Boys" and episodes of TV shows "Revolution" (NBC), "Sex and the City" (HBO), and "Law & Order" (NBC).
Douglas Purver (Visual FX Artist) - has worked with brands such as Nokia, Sprint, Audi, and Nike and collaborated with top ad agencies including TBWA\Chiat\Day, Grey, Goodby Silverstein & Partners, and Widen+Kennedy; has done VFX for HBO's "Boardwalk Empire."
ABOUT THE PRODUCTION
It is our intention to use the short film as a prologue to a feature film. While there is no guarantee that a feature will be made, we believe a high-quality short will attract attention and generate opportunities for this to happen. As one example, Russell's short film "The Tested" became a feature after it won the L.A. Shortfest.
We will shoot the film on the RED EPIC (the groundbreaking camera used on "Girl with the Dragon Tattoo," "Prometheus," and Elysium") and with anamorphic lenses. Russell used these specs on his last project, and it will give our film an incredible widescreen cinematic feel that will serve as the ideal canvas on which our story will unfold. In addition, the film will feature top-notch visual effects from Doug Purver, currently working on the Steven Soderbergh Cinemax series "The Knick."
Why $10K? Based on experience, we know the film cannot be done at a high-quality level for a budget under $9K (the other $1K would be for the 10% that Kickstarter and credit cards will get for these transactions).
Here's the breakdown: we anticipate a 6-day shoot, with a cast & crew of 12. Meals will be needed twice a day each day. There are also costs for transportation, props, wardrobe, and equipment rentals for an entire week - and that doesn't even include costs for insurance and locations.
Upon request, we would be happy to provide a copy of the budget to any of our financial backers.
This project cannot happen without your financial support, and we are most grateful for any assistance you are able to offer. We have a wide range of rewards for various levels of contributions. All of the rewards will make you a part of the production of our film.
Some of the reward items available include:
- advanced digital copies of the film
- invitations to the set, cast/crew screening and party
- digital promotion of your business or project
Risks and challenges
We want to make a unique, exciting, and challenging short which explores powerful ideas on its own terms. "All Your Base" is a design-heavy film and will require CGI effects and production values at the highest possible level. We have accounted for ways to offset the typically high cost of making films which will bring us under budget.
A common question that gets asked is: what happens after the short film gets made? We will take the short to film festivals and attempt to get it distributed on multiple platforms, including web sites.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
