THE PLAYBACK SINGER tells the story of an aimless, would-be, jungle-gym architect who finds his existence disrupted – and his marriage upended – when his prickly, Indian, B-movie playback singer father-in-law comes to visit and overstays his welcome. THE PLAYBACK SINGER is a family drama spiked with comedy that gets to the heart of relationships and of the challenges of finding our place in this world. Starring Ross Partridge, Navi Rawat, Joe Towne, Betsy Beutler, and one of India's most beloved actor/singer/songwriters, Piyush Mishra.
Ross and Navi rehearse while Alex and Jose set up for the shot.
THE PLAYBACK SINGER is the first feature film by writer/director, Suju Vijayan. Suju wrote the script over the course of a year - during breaks from and after hours during her job as a reality TV producer. With producer Mike Blum, she put together the funding for the feature and in January 2011 began working with casting director Alison Buck to find our wonderful actors. With much help from associate producer David Zwick and producer Carolina Roca-Smith, we got organized, crewed up, and shot the film over 18 days in August 2011.
Tarin sets up our biggest scene of the film - Ray and his jungle gym.
WHERE WE ARE NOW
We have completed editing and are in the final phases of post-production. We are preparing to start our festival run and working to secure distribution and build an audience.
Our film has been financed by individual investors as well as sweat equity. But we need a little more to make it to the finish line - and that little more is help from you. We'd like to invite you to join our filmmaking family in finishing this film and launching it into the world. We want all of you to be able to see it, and that means finishing the film and securing distribution. Every penny you donate (minus the fees for Kickstarter’s involvement) will go directly to THE PLAYBACK SINGER movie budget. Your generous donation will help us pay for the following:
- sound mix
- color correction
- final outputs of the film (BluRay, HD, etc.)
- DVD screeners, shipping supplies and mailing expenses
- movie posters, postcards, and other publicity materials
- festival-related expenses including fees, travel, and accommodations
If our goal isn’t met before the deadline, you don't get charged and we don't make any money at all. We want to avoid this scenario at all costs!
We've been so lucky throughout this production to work with tremendously talented and generous people! They worked long, hard hours for little to no money and we are forever grateful. Here are just a few of them.
