"If you ask 'Should we be in space?' you ask a nonsense question. We are in space. We will be in space." ~ Frank Herbert
WE DID IT!
With your support we've reached our goal and unlocked a few stretch goals.
$12,000 ::Supply Drop::
A new ICARUS gadget will be created and gifted to travelers on the ship this year at Burning Man.
$13,000 ::Bass Cannon::
Help us shake the playa with a sound system upgrade! The current system is in need of more bass. We want to get more modern, more efficient, subwoofer drivers to drop the low end down and get the power levels up.
We will take video at Burning Man of each of the High Council (Ilya Polyakov, Brandon Robinson, Ben LaRue, & EZ) slapping each other in the face. This project would not be possible without the help of so many of our close friends and family and we know you want this.
$15,000 ::Homing Beacon::
We will create a digital map at our Dustfish docking base (7:00 & Esplanade) where you can find ICARUS’ location on playa.
$17,000 :: Intergalactic Jubilee::
THE FINAL TRIBUTE! We want to celebrate the success of this project with all our supporters. Our new goal is to meet and personally thank all our backers through a series of meat filled feasts. First we’ll start with a Deep Playa cookout at Burning Man on ICARUS. Ever had a BBQ 14 feet in the air on a spaceship? Neither have we, but sounds like a stellar idea. After some post Burning Man decompression we will host BBQs in Philly, Brooklyn, and the Bay Area. *As always none of our rewards are exclusive. Even if you haven’t donated and you find us, we’ll feed everyone we can while supplies last. Carne Diem!

Hello Citizens of Earth,
We are the crew of the spacecraft ICARUS, and we’re in need of your assistance. We are currently working hard on a variety of awesome upgrades and modifications, but we require your help with funding. These changes will ensure an unforgettable experience for people traveling on the ship and for those viewing it from afar. To express our appreciation and motivate you to donate, we’re offering a number of exciting rewards that will show the world you support dope space punk art projects.
What is ICARUS?
- ICARUS is an art car that is 40 ft. long and 25 ft. wide.
- ICARUS is a mobile dance party spaceship that can hold over 100 people. It has a 14,000 watt repurposed IMAX theater sound system and sports a unique blend of nightclub and custom sci-fi lighting.
- ICARUS is a mutated US Air Force Emerson Electric K cargo loader with a hydraulic lift that can rise 14 ft. in the air and can hold over 25,000 lbs.
- ICARUS is futuristic space travel made accessible.
- ICARUS is a dream of big art.
- ICARUS is an entirely non-profit project that bridges East and West Coast teams in an effort to create, inspire and build community.
Where will your donation go?
The estimated cost of everything we want to do this year is around $20,000. We are only asking for half, which is the minimum we need to get ICARUS to Burning Man this year. Any amount over our goal will allow us to put more money into the ship and focus on the build.
Why are our costs so high?
ICARUS has complex hydraulic, electrical, lighting, and audio systems. Maintaining and upgrading all of those systems is both time-consuming and expensive. After the initial build in 2014, ICARUS was docked at an art car ranch a few miles from Burning Man. Keeping it there has been relatively inexpensive, but has made working on the project difficult. This is why we recently moved the ship to American Steel, a large artist workshop in Oakland, California. Transporting ICARUS to American Steel was vital to the future of the project, but relocating it wasn't cheap. Even when disassembled, the vehicle is too large to be street legal and can only be moved using a specialized flatbed with wide load permits for every state it travels through on its way to and from Black Rock Desert. Your contributions will help fuel ICARUS’ voyage back to Burning Man and ensure everyone can experience the project this year..
*All Kickstarter rewards that include rides at Burning Man are not private or exclusive in any way. We will make sure there is room for you and your guests, but all are welcome on board as long as we are under capacity. ICARUS is a community project and our mission is to share it with as many people as possible. Thanks for your support and understanding.

Risks and challenges
If you are familiar with the history of this project you will know that we’ve had a few challenges while assembling the ship at Burning Man. The move to American Steel will enable us to work out these kinks and drastically cut down on the time and energy it will take this year. This will allow us to get the ship operational much earlier in the week, giving more people the opportunity to experience it and the chance for more interstellar adventures.
This campaign ends right before August, so it may be a challenge to get backers their rewards in time for Burning Man. We will do everything we can to get your perks out as quickly as possible, but the timing will depend on how quickly everyone answers our backer survey.
Join us in supporting the return of ICARUS to Black Rock City in 2016. Our dedicated crew has successfully completed our previous projects with the support of backers like you! We look forward to doing so again with your help.
