This looks pretty great - wondering about adding a base to the miniatures (even a plain round base that is larger than the rocket would add A LOT of stability and allow you to keep the current designs, which are excellent).

    2. Tykris 4 days ago

Oh and by the way, just saying, your launch day is just one day off to commemorate the first US human spaceflight (Mercury-Redstone III on May 5th 1961).

    3. Tykris 4 days ago

Oh yeah, someone mentioned it earlier but yeah, you did messed up the measurement of the blueprint board in the "What you get" section, just under "1 blueprint like board". I think the inches should be the other way around doesn't it.

@credit to the other guy down here...

    4. Tykris 4 days ago

Love the card game, I feels like a novelty or collector's item.

I Agree with @Jacob & @Johan, also in a constructive manner but I see you've replied to this.

@Michal Meiser, nice job. But it might be a bit too cartoony compared to Dalibor's more realistic style. I do agree stickers or screen print would make nicer meeple. But it seems they've got something prepared for us... yay!!

@Pablo Pablo, nice point... ahah although I don't mind that at all, I mean they could be red as well but then the soviet wouldn't be red, you know. Nobody should get offended by that, I mean, they could do maple flavored meeples for the couple of Canadians astronauts we've got and a Canadarm in the form of a hockey stick for all I care.

Maybe it was proposed before but maybe the other side of the board could act as a mat for the card game? And this one is more of a strech but, if there is lots of air in that awesome box (I do love the box art), it'd be nice having a place to squeeze the card game in there as well (with the awesome foam insert or not). I told you it was far fetched but it'd be cool.

Looking forward seeing those playthroughs. Count me in (if my wife let's me... but I'll figure it out... did it twice before afterall)

@Clint: Thank you very much for the feedback! As for the rocket minis, their stability is something we already had in mind, and their design will definitely reflect the fact that they must be easy and fun to use, without falling over. We'll make sure of that.

@Yoh182: Thank you! :) And yes, we're counting with French translation at least as a downloadable PDF.

@Martin: This won't be possible since Space Race: The Board Game is a different game than the card game we have published earlier. There is a section in the preview in which we explain the differences between the two.

@Dave: Thank you, Dave! The solo mode is something we really pay attention to, and we are aware that many people will be looking for exactly that.

    6. Dave Matthew on

The box and board looks nice, prettier than the previous box. I hope the solo mode is strong, otherwise I'm out.

This game will be amazing !!! Blueprint's design is a really original good choice. The gameplay with combo cards seems great. Well... Good pick 👌👏

      2 quick thoughts:
      1. +1 to the box having the amazing art that is on the cards instead of this unfun looking box art.
      2. the rock minis to mark the places look great but they are sooo tall and thing they seem destined to be toppling over constantly...something squatter and less tipsy would probably be much more practical and less annoying in actual use

...very excited about this getting closer!!

    14. Klobouk Collaborator on

@Teurlinx Nice feedback! When you pledge for "Space Race (base game)" you will get the new Space Race that you are currently seeing on the Kickstarter page, The Rockets is an expansion for Space Race bringing a 5th player into the game and new variable powers with matching rockets :)
@Pablo Thanks for the feedback! They should have been orange. We'll fix it :)
      @Sébastien Yes!
@zeronumber Roger, sir! Counting down T-26 days to launch! *spoiler alert* some meeples upgrades might appear in stretch goals. And yes, the solo community is very strong and they have been enjoying the JFK variant, so we are bringing it back in a new coat! :)
@Huckleberry Awesome! Welcome aboard astronaut :)
@Nick Thanks for your kinds words! :) We are currently gathering production info about the playmats.

    15. Klobouk Collaborator on

@Steve Thank you very much for such a thoughout feedback! It has been made clear that we have not explained the differences between the original card game and the new Space Race: The Board Game clearly, and we'll do our best to explain it better for you.
The thickness of the board will be about 2,5 mm.
We are certainly thinking about adding neoprene mats, at the moment we are gathering additional production information about them.
Space Race: The Board Game and the original card game are two different games, that's why we there is no upgrade pack.
@Francesco Thanks for the feedback Francesco, we'll not be offering an upgrade pack, because Space Race is a completely new game standing on new mechanics tied together with the new cards and new components. Based on all the feedback we understand that the differences are a bit unclear and we are already working on explaining them in a better way :)

    16. Charles Gibault on

Agree with previous comment on the box design. It could benefit more from the beautiful artwork from the rest of the game. Would love a box combining them like a 80s film poster.

I think the board is great with a blueprint design (it sticks to the theme) but is the game box really be all blue ? I think that's really uninspiring compared to the great theme of this game : can't we have a beautiful cover plenty of rockets or space items ?

    19. Teurlinx on

The title of the game is confusing. When I pledge for "Space Race (base game)" is that the pre-existing card game with this campaign offering only expansion features (the rockets) to enhance the existing card game? I'm sure it's explained. But it should be really obvious what's what.

First the game looks AMAZING! One of the things I always look for when backing a board game, that I hate having to hunt for, is Age Range for the game, Length of time to play, and number of players. Having that right at the top or even in your first image on the project page makes it really really easy for people looking for specific types of board games to know if this is a good fit or not.

    26. Klobouk Collaborator on

@JKP Thanks JKP for the feedback! :) You're certainly not the only one asking for better explanation. Good to know it before the actual launch. We're working on enhancing the explanation section. It will take some time but hopefully it will properly present all the news & mechanics. Thanks again!
@HelloMoto Wow, thanks for such amazing constructive feedback! To answer your questions - yes, of course we are tracking all of the feedback we get from you guys :) New portions of it comes much faster than we're even able to react to those previous. Every faction has 15 meeples because you will have to keep track on the initative, projects and most of all the breakthroughs - you will propably not use all of the 15 astronauts in every game, but in some games you could. We also have a special in-depth updates about the breakthrough tracker and mission control mechanics scheduled for the live campaign. Once again, amazing feedback! Thanks and see you on the launch pad!
@MAJBrown22 Thank you very much for the point. That seems to be an issue for plenty of followers, at least looking to the feedback so far. We are definitely working on enhancing "what's new" chapter.
@Johan Thanks for your constructive feedback! Dalibor's art of the Space Race is truly unique and one of a kind! There's actually plenty of new content in the board Space Race, perhaps we're not telling it properly. Besides the board and the rockets, there's huge amount of new gameplay. It's a new different game, it's not an "upgrade" expansion to the card game. Although it shares some basic aspects. That said, thanks for a constructive feedback. We're working on upgrading the explanation of "what's new". It should be capable of answering all of these questions. (y)
@Todd Thanks for your kind words! :) That must have been amazing, I remember how I felt during the Falcon Heavy launch!
@Ciprian Great idea, thanks! We'll try to look around for some skilled miniature painter! Regarding your second question, I'm not sure if I got the point – do you mean the "flippable" mission tokens? If so, the point is they're different to allow various gameplay scenarios/strategies. Printing them on the playmat would prevent such an option.
@Rafael Thanks! And yes, the rulebook will be translated and available to download.
@Jason Thanks! I believe that you will find the shipping rates reasonable too.
@Troy Don't worry, we have something much more exciting than stickers coming! :)
@Carlos Thanks for inspiration! We're working on SGs and already have several juicy ones on the way ;)
@Michal Cool idea and a really nice sketch! *Spoiler alert* Meeple upgrades are most likely coming in SGs ;) Thanks again and see you on the launchpad!

    27. Klobouk Collaborator on

@Agentdave7, @MadMartigan, @Jacob Thank you all for the feedback! I now see we should have composed the explanatory section differently and in more detail to explain clearly how are the original card game and the current board game different. The fact is they're two different games. It's not meant that one should replace another. That's the short story. The long story will come with an upgraded explanatory section. Hope you will then see that your original card Space Race is not outdated, as well as the new board Space Race is worth having ;) Either way, it's crucial to hear that the section that should have explained the differences is obviously not sufficient. Thank you for pointing it out! (and to all others whom I might not named!)
      @Anthony C'est parfait, merci beacoup! L'espirit du jeu est meme d'original :)
@Rob Good point, thanks! We'll fix it in the following version of the graphics.
@Daniel Thanks for your feedback Daniel! Regarding the meeples, we have some upgrades prepared, even better than stickers! I sent you a PM about your review channel :)
@Vojtěch Thank you very much for your in-depth view on the game! The complexity and the possibility of comboing the cards is, as you said, kept in the game! :) Interesting idea of having a booklet of card abillites, we'll add it to the list of ideas :)
@Sergio Thanks, we are very fond of the blue! :) Haha, Mr Brezhnev is probably thinking hard about his next move (or vodka?), but we'll look if we have a better photo from the shoot.
@Jan Myslíme na to. Minimálně stáhnutelné PDF v plné grafice by být mělo :)
@Jumurdzsak It's two different games. Almost 60% of cards are different. It shares some aspects of the engine building and ability trigerring but also introduces new mechanics that don't work in the original card game engine.
@Gurney Thanks, glad you like it! :)
@Valter Sorry, we currently not considering a 6th player module. That said, it's not a hard "no go". If there'll be a reasonable demand, the game engine should work with the 6th player quite easily.
      @Carlos Awesome, thanks Carlos! :) That's a great idea, noted already :)
@Jiří Thanks for the feedback Jiří, glad to see our Czech community here :) When we were working on the board for Space Race, there came a point when we realised we have a more than just a board on the table. It became obvious it was a different game! And we loved it. We then proceed the development that way and the result is what you can see here on the preview page — another piece of Space Race universe, that has its own distinct vibec, different gameplay approaches, new strategies, new components, etc. Almost everything in board Space Race is different and goes its own way in comparison to the original card game. And that's also why there isn't an upgrade pack. The original Space Race stands firm as a super-portable smart and complex game. It certainly is not outdated or incomplete. The board game doesn't aim on replacing it. They're two distinct games. However, based on the feedback so far, it's been obvious we have explained neither the long story behind the board game nor the major differences in gameplay sufficiently for the returning backers. That was obivously not the plan. We're working on improving the campaign page and believe it will show all the news properly then. Thanks again for posting the feedback, Jiří.
      @The4thJawa Good catch, corrected.
@Citharel Glad you like it! There is a sneak peek picture on the campaign page from shooting of the video, I think you'll enjoy it! :)
@Petr Thanks! There's a dedicated section on the campaign page about the new mechanics of Space Race. However, it seems it's not communicating all the news properly and needs to be reworked, as plenty of supporters already misisng more in-detail info about the differences. We're working on that. Thank you for pointing it out!
@EdS. Thanks for the feedback! *cough* there might be some SG for astronaut meeples *cough* ;)

    28. Steve Johansson on

I'm a little concerned by the lack of description of what is different from the Card Game to the Board Game. I'm also thinking that the board as shown there looks very solid and appears to be roughly 6 times the size of the box. What thickness is it and have you considered a neoprene mat as an add-on?

Are you considering an upgrade package for those (like me) that have the Card Game and Interkosmos. I honestly do not see enough here to justify spending 60 euros plus the inevitably large postage for me being an Aussie.

Also while I love the rockets as an idea the photo you have below "Variable player powers" make them look very cheap and nasty. Either get a different angle for the photo or make them as impressive as a rocket should be. They look better in the image where they are moving on the blueprint board. The meeples also need to be less looking like meeples and more looking like astronauts. It's a Space game after all.

A few typos and grammar issues:
Construct Powerful Combos - you currently have Powerfull
      Dominate Breakthrough (should be Breakthroughs)
breakthroughs you reach (should be breakthroughs you make)
Inches are wrong on Blueprint board diagram - high number shown on small side, small number shown on high side
Soyuz - fully operational up to these days (should be Still fully operational)

I'll be glad to see a pledge which integrate the original card game and add the missing components to play it like a board game... Now it looks like a game redesign more than a brand new game with it's specific mechanics but maybe I haven't read enough!

Would like to see more details on the difference between the card game + expansions and this board game. Maybe point by point comparisons of the differences or something. Whatever it takes to make me, an all in previous backer, decide if I need this one too.

    33. HelloMoto

      Here are my thoughts/questions.

First off, will comments here on the Kickstarter page count towards the pre-launch stretch goals? There are currently only 3 comments on Facebook but many more here.

Why does each faction need 15 meeples? None of the pictures show any one faction using more than 4 or 5, but there are three times as many in the game. +1 for custom astronaut meeples as well.

Could the score tracker start at "Year 0"? I understand it supports the theme of the game having it start in the 50's, but having it end at "2020" seems prohibitive to possible expansions. Having a general year timeline would help to future proof the game, especially now when 2020 is just around the corner and developments in real space programs continue to advance.

I think the Breakthrough Tracker needs to be explained more thoroughly, especially because it's one of the things that sets the board game apart from the card game. How does it work, what are the concentric circles, are there limits to the number of meeples that can occupy each circle? I'm sure the rulebook makes it clear, but most people won't bother reading a rulebook before backing a project (at least I don't).

The Mission Control Tiles as well need a better explanation. They seem like a good possibility for future expansions which can really add to the variability and replayability of the game, but the pictures of Mercury, Sputnik, and Apollo missions all show the exact same tiles. I'm assuming they're still in development, but if you're emphasizing that they offer "Unlimited Ways to Win," it might be good to show how they're different. Also a simple way to separate them, possibly on the underside, would be very helpful.

Think that's all for now. As with all of your games, it looks great and I'm genuinely excited about it. I'm looking forward to seeing this project develop.

+1 for making Space Race vs Space Race The Boardgame more distinguishable from each other. Some constructive criticism as follows. As of now, I'm seeing "new" add-ons like the player board, minis and some meeples, but not much else. The rockets can be bought at any toy store. The art and cards are virtually the same. I understand it's expensive and time-consuming to create new art but since many returning backers will look at this and scrutinize the contents, you'll need to be prepare for an onslaught of criticism for not adding more new content.

Looks awesome! As a child of the Space race (I'm 65) I really love the mechanics, artwork and mini's! Already have the last Kickstarter card game, and look forward to adding the All In Deluxe edition of this version!

    37. Ciprian Septimiu Constantin on

I would add next to the white miniature pictures a picture with them painted. This would have a bigger visual impact.
Also why don't you put the stages information on the play-mat and leave the covers with less details.

I agree that miniatures would be a really cool upgrade idea. It must be done right though. One game I backed on Kickstarter has miniatures and the scale is far too small and the plastic is extremely fragile. I've barely played it so I haven't had any break yet.

One thing to be mindful of when using pictures on the campaign page, pictures are shrunk down when someone uses a mobile device. Text within pictures can become very hard to read because it is so small. Most of the pictures are fine, but there are a couple that could be adjusted. Overall, really like the layouts of the images.

Interkosmos backer. New card designs make me feel like the ones I have are outdated. I didn't play it enough to have wrecked cards so mine are still in perfect condition. :/

    44. MadMartigan on

Totally agree with Jacob statement. As a backer of both space race & interkosmos, I feel like the boardgame is the ultimate stage of the Game development. If the boardgame is streamlined, easier to understand while keeping a high strategic value, and with the look of the card game : the card game will never go back on table again.
What about having just the board as a payable option to use as a mat ?

    45. Jacob Gunness
      Superbacker
      on

Well, at a glance, this looks lovely! The game board is simple, stylish and fits the theme. The minis look good. The price point seems fair.

What is missing is (as has already been pointed out) a clearer outline of how this isn't just Space Card: The Card Game plus a game board. You will see a lot of returning backers, and if they - like me - already own the base game plus expansion, it's not really obvious what they're getting that's sufficiently different from what they already own.

Also, since the card game to board game upgrade has been dropped, you probably need to explain people how the card game is still a good game in its own right and not just a slightly outdated stepping stone towards / prototype for what you really wanted to make in the first place: the board game :) Otherwise some backers might feel a bit "burned".
As a side note: will it be possible to play something like the card game using the cards from the board game? They look very similar. I'm just thinking if you want to grab the cards and put them in a small game for easy portability.

I like the card game because of its small shelf space requirements, so maybe the board game caters to a different audience.

P.S. Can't remember if it's been mentioned, but there are some typos in the campaign text (Appolo, powerfull etc.)

So loving the campaign and the rocket ship models I have two ideas to throw out for you.

1 I feel the meeples need stickers of sorts or need to look a bit more like asteonaughts.

2 one of ks exclusives could be to design your own rocket for x money design your own rocket (within reason)

New Space Race Mechanics

Space Race builds on some engine building aspects of the original card game, notably on the interactive simultaneous action selection, entertaining tableau development, and strategic combo-chaining gameplay. Different development decisions and new possibilities opened up by the addition of new components led Space Race to become a completely new and separate game with its own distinct vibe and gameplay options. Space Race doesn't aim to replace the card game but complement it from mechanically different point of view, bring you a fresh space exploration experience.

Variable player powers: Every faction has access to rocket models. These rockets come with several unique Control Cards that you exchange for the basic Control Cards in order to access special abilities and options that are tailored to each of the factions. So, controlling NASA with Saturn 1B is different than playing as Private Sector with Falcon Heavy.

Updated cards: Almost half of the cards from are different from the card game and Interkosmos. They are either tweaked to better align with the board game mechanics or they are completely reworked.

Blueprint Board: Apart from streamlining the round structure, the board contains the following areas that affect the game:

  •  Progress Tracker – allows continuous scoring throughout the game (see below).
  •  Breakthrough Tracker – brings a fresh and streamlined approach to Breakthroughs (see below).
  •  Mission Control – adds variable scoring through different missions (see below).
  •  Borders of the Universe – There is a maximum of 4 cards per Stage in the Universe. Once more cards appear in a Stage, they stack on top of the previous ones, making the old cards unavailable to players. This additional control over the Universe brings more player interaction and requires a bit deeper strategic planning on your part.

Revised scoring system: What contributes towards your Progress (points) is your Stage Output, Finishing Projects, Breakthrough Domination, and Laboratory Power.

  •  Projects (similar to Achievements in the card game) score immediately when you complete them. However, your time to do so is limited. During the game, Projects you can work on are constantly changing as old ones close and new ones open.
  •  Breakthrough Domination and Laboratory Power: These are scored whenever the Mission Control says so. For example, in the Apollo mission, Breakthroughs are scored at the end of rounds, 2, 4, 6, and 7 while Lab is scored at the end of rounds 4 and 7.
  •  Stage Output: Every round, you generate Progress (points) for your Agency Levels in a stage that matches your active Control Card.

Pay attention to Mission Control, a variable set of tokens that tells you what (and if) you should score Breakthrough Domination and/or Lab, and whether to open or close projects at the end of each round. This brings additional depth in the game, adding an extra spark in the choices you make each turn while further emphasizing the need for clever planning.

Focus on Control Cards management: As a resource, Control Cards have even more strategic importance thanks to the fact that their level alone decides the Initiative. Choose the one you play carefully because they mark the Stage you will score during the round (Stage Output) in addition to letting you grow your Agency and activate abilities.

Different approach to Breakthroughs: Breakthrough cards allow you to send astronauts on Breakthrough Zones in order to dominate a Breakthrough area. Moreover, thanks to the fact the Breakthrough domination is scored multiple times during the game, Breakthrough battles are relevant and frequent right from the start!

New abilities: Space Race introduces new Breakthrough related abilities. These allow you to either place an astronaut on Breakthrough Zones (including the new Launch Pad) or move astronauts in order to secure a better position on the Breakthrough Tracker.
