When he was a youth, Jay would see middle-aged men wearing their Bermuda shorts and Hawaiian shirts and wonder, “How can they go out in public like that? Do they really think they look good???” After pondering this for a while, it suddenly dawned on him: These men had nothing left to prove. They were established in their careers, they had homes and families, and were no longer interested in impressing anyone. They did not feel a need to look cool. Jay realized, of course, that this was a truly cool place to be.
Years later, when Jay had a family of his own, he and his family participated in a Friday Night Cookout circuit. Each week, the cookout would be held at a different family’s house. Jay, remembering the lesson he had learned years earlier, tended to wear loud Aloha shirts at these events. He was going for an “aggressively casual” vibe. It wasn’t just about the shirt, it was about an attitude.
At one such Friday gathering, one of the ladies said, “Nice Friday night barbeque shirt, Jay!” This planted another seed in Jay’s fertile mind.
Thus, at a subsequent cookout, when someone commented on Jay’s shirt, he proclaimed, “This isn’t a Friday night barbeque shirt, it’s a BUBS – a ‘Butt Ugly Barbeque Shirt!’” His daughter, who was 11 or 12 years old at the time, took him aside and said, “Daddy, that really isn’t a very nice word. You should call it your Big, Ugly Barbeque Shirt.” (Out of the mouths of babes!)
Our goal is to produce our own line of quality, affordable, 100%-cotton shirts for family guys to wear when they are hanging out with their friends and loved ones. Rather than recycle classic designs of flora and fauna, we hope to produce patterns that reflect the lifestyle of the wearers - and not without a healthy dose of humor!
The first edition BUBS shirts will have the Atomic Grill pattern illustrated in the graphic for this campaign. (The Atomic Grill is copyright 2015 by Jay Polk, the father of BUBS. All rights reserved.)
Risks and challenges
The primary risk we face is the possibility that the manufacturer will not produce our shirts in a timely manner, or will make some error in the printing. However, we are being very careful to check out potential manufacturers, to be sure we select one who has a reputation for producing quality products on time, and for standing behind their work.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
