Introducing ...the ARCTRIKE, an electric recumbent trike
The Arctrike Story:
3 years in the making, with countless hours designing, building and testing has resulted in this final prototype. 3 years ago, I envisioned driving an electric recumbent but my options were limited. There were no electric recumbent trikes being built. I could buy a decent quality recumbent and then modify it trying to find a place to put the batteries, controller, and how to power it. When I began looking at this, I found that there were no Recumbents that had suspension. It would have required a luggage rack with saddle bags to locate the batteries and controller and when I contacted some of the manufactures of these trikes they did not recommend putting a powerful motor on their trikes as they were not designed for it. That was it for me...I decided to design and fabricate my own electric trike...from the ground up..
A word about the frame design of the Arctrike
When I decided to design the frame, I chose to use the bible of recumbent trike design, "Hell Bent A recumbent primer". I just want to illustrate one aspect of the Arctrike design shown here. I decided to utilize the full triangulated stay design which is the strongest setup.
After thousands of kilometers of testing on the original trike that was built in 2011, there were successes and failures so I went back to the drawing board, this time with a team of experts and skilled craftsmen and we came up with the second prototype. After completion, we tested, and tested, and put on another couple of thousand kilometers of driving. WOW!!...Success!!...
The final prototype was a joy to drive. It handled all kinds of road conditions beautifully and was well balanced. It was easy to pedal and modulate the throttle along with how hard or how easy you are pedaling. We didn't baby it though, we drove it hard and over conditions I wouldn't recommend, to see what might break, or where the weak points might be. We drove the batteries to exhaustion, we pushed it hard in 90 degree heat to see how hot the motor would get. We drove it in the rain, soaking wet. It survived all these different kinds of conditions. The Trike pictured has over 2000 kilometers on it.
Now imagine yourself driving down the road, street, path, in the woods on your very own Arctrike. Do you want to pedal and use the 7 speeds available?...go ahead...if you get tired or if there's a really big hill, help is a just a throttle twist away. Do you want to experience the thrill of the beast?...sit back, relax and let the trike do it's thing. The sensation and visual you will get while driving this baby will knock your socks off..check out our video to get some idea.
The Arctrike has been exposed to a lot of people in the last 3 years and I would like to share with you some of the comments from people on Endless - Sphereand Bent Rider

This looks like a perfect kickstarted or ingegogo campaign. I think there were a some successful campaigns on kickstarted for EVs. I would totally support your campaign.
Look closely and you'll see their front suspension. Notice also they are using Kickstarter to fund the project. Check out their contribution tiers and offers.
Still, (IMO) your product maintains a visual and price point advantage.

You have a fine product. I too would resist suggestions that you attempt to make your trike into an "everything for everyone" as what you have now is a clear vision for a specific segment of the market. Once you find success with this current product, *then* there may be an opportunity to explore alternate models.
Your main selling points of your trike are a front suspension, electric capability integrated into the design and unique body work. These are great differentiators from what is currently on the market. But, time is of the essence as your designs are easily copied by competitors. (Hopefully) you have done what you can to protect your design.

Recumbent Trikes are badass, yours is by far the best looking I've ever seen... I would love to own one but they are to wide to ride on Michigan streets.. Anywhere where their are bike paths/lanes they would be the ideal choice.. However it's just not an option for me :-(... I love what your doing though, the design is top notch and looks to be very well thought out... Maybe one day I'll live in a place where if be able to ride one, until then I'll have to stick with 2 wheels on the shoulder of the road or sidewalk

I like it. If I were to try Recumbents, yours would be a design on my short list.
Up front we have the suspension. This really makes this trike unique. It is composed of 2 tubular control arms hooked up to 2 coil over shocks that have rebound and tension adjustments. You can adjust the camber, toe, and handle bar position. This enables the trike to transverse various kinds of road surfaces without being bounced around. All heavy duty components...this trike is built tough!
The seat frame is made from aluminum to make it light. It has side bolsters that hold you in but also are a place for you to rest your arms. The seat in production may be molded from composite materials instead of the frame construction, but would look pretty much the same and have the same dimensions.
Removable Side Panels
The trike has removable side panels. They cover the battery box and give the trike a seamless beautifully designed look.
Battery Box / Ignition, Charging Port
The battery box which contains the cells, controller and BMS, all hidden under the seat which is easily removable. This arrangement is also perfectly placed for ideal weight distribution. There is an ignition with key and above it a charging port. In production, we would have a clear plexiglass cover over both the ignition and XLR plug weatherproofing it.
This is the world famous Crystalyte HS3540 hub motor with a 7 speed cassette which drives the Arctrike. It is capable of great torque and power and is very reliable. It is the sensorless version mated to a specially modified 18 fet controller by Lyen..
Driving the Arctrike:
Driving the Arctrike or any recumbent trike requires a bit of a learning curve. Even though the Arctrike has superior handling capabilities there are some inherent design attributes associated with this kind of tadpole design. Steering is tight and quick so you have to learn to relax and make minimal steering inputs to go where you want to go..Pedaling a recumbent is quite a bit different than a regular bike, so you use more of your upper thigh and hip muscles and may find initially that you get tired quicker. Using the power in the trike requires some practice. There is a 3 speed switch that on position 1 will deliver a nice soft boost to your riding that on its own, will propel the trike to about 29 kph.Setting no.2 and especially no.3 on the 72 volt version, will provide approximately 3000 and 4800 watts respectively, so it is recommended if you don't have experience driving a recumbent, that you practice using these modes in a safe area. Note:All trikes sold will conform to the legal requirements of the province or state in which they are sold to via the controller. They can be operated by the user without these limits but the user assumes the legal risk and are considered "off road" or "competition mode" only.
When we are funded, we will be adding some features to the trike like...
Front and Rear Lights:
The trike will come with high powered front and rear lights.
The arctrike will have regenerative capability for those who want it. When you press the regen button, you hit the brakes and the controller puts a little bit of juice back into the battery. It also helps slow you down saving on brakes.
We will be adding a headrest to the Arctrike. The headrest pictured is a unit from A.D.E.M which we will be using.
We will be in development with a special app that will display speed, time, distance, altitude, and has speedometer for Bike or Car, plus we will have a bracket that you can attach your smart phone to the trike and will be adjustable to accommodate most phones.
The Arctrike Team:
From left to right...Eddy, Terry, Pete and Gordie
This team of specialists at CD Enterprises in London, Ontario is responsible for the production and in part the development of the second prototype and will be instrumental in its production.
Eddy: A specialist in Milling and fabrication of specialized materials
Terry: Has over 30 years of experience in fabricating custom parts and supplying those components to various industries requiring exacting tolerances and specifications
Pete: The owner of CD Enterprises and an all around guy who can operate any machine or component in the shop and over sees all of the complicated and sometimes challenging jobs that arise
Gordie: A skilled craftsman and an avid downhill mountain biker with tons of experience in fabrication including the development of the second prototype.
And Z-Auto Rebuilders, with Frank Zoccano at the helm. He brings over 30 years of experience building and restoring cars and also his expertise at custom fabricating and his previous experience at kart and automobile racing.
The thing that makes the Arctrike special, is the custom frame and suspension. Part of the frame actually goes through the middle of the battery box because we wanted to keep the batteries centralized and as low center of gravity as possible. This level of precision and craftsmanship can only come from people who know what they're doing and how they're doing it. It takes a team of specialists who bring different skills and experience to the table and that is what we have done.
What others are saying about the Arctrike:
We gave some people all of whom have never driven a recumbent trike, a test drive.
Aaron: " I love this thing. At first, it took some getting used to, but in the end, this thing is awesome. Its just fun!"
Larry: "There's a bit of a learning curve when it comes to driving the Arctrike, but it quickly becomes intuitive and I felt stable and safe, even at 50 KPH"
Mike: "This is so much fun. I have never seen one, let alone having taken a test drive in one. It's not hard to pedal and I can operate the throttle and my pedaling easily."
Anne: " I was a little apprehensive at first not knowing what to expect, but by the time I got back from my little spin, I had a big grin on my face."
Joel: "The more I drive this trike, the more I love it"
As you can see from the video, and the expressions on their faces, all of the people who test drove the Arctrike, loved the experience. After we shot this video, Aaron took the trike for an extended tour of one of our bike paths. It was quite a while until he returned. He seemed to have a permanent grin on his face... ;)
Your pledge of $1.00 will get your name on our website of one of our awesome backers!! and it will be there permanently.

A successful Kickstarter campaign will enable us to bring the Arctrike to market as quickly as possible. Currently, there isn't anything like the Arctrike that's been designed from the ground up around an electric platform in the recumbent market. Help us bring this innovative and amazing product to production!
Risks and challenges
There are always challenges to a complex project like this. We have taken steps to be as prepared for production as possible. If funded, the trike's frame and components have been jigged and CNC ready to produce. We have been in contact with our suppliers to confirm product delivery. Some of the other challenges are the battery shipping, which can be expensive. We would probably be looking at making the seat from a mold from a composite material, but it would be the same in dimensions as the original except we would be adding a head rest.
We are excited and committed to making this trike and if successfully funded,we have a strong and excellent team dedicated to its completion.
For Kickstarter, we will be crating the trike, and shipping it this way. When you get the trike, its ready to go. Fully charged. Once we begin manufacturing the trikes, we will offer a cheaper alternative with respects to shipping. The trike will be shipped out needing assembly, this will be cheaper in shipping and a slight decrease in price. Conversely, you can always come down to the shop and pick your Arctrike up for free!
There is a 3 year warranty on the frame and frame components. There is a one year warranty on the batteries and motor. The quality of the frame and components as well as the electronics gives us the confidence to say that you probably would never need to use it!
We will be doing concerted updates not only on Kickstarter, but after we are funded, we will be doing updates as to the trike's completion. We are committed and excited to bring this trike to market and we will be going out of our way to do that!
The batteries are Lithium Ion. They are composed of Headway Cells. 3.3 volts and 15 amps per cell. They are top quality and are the latest in battery technology. The have a lifespan of proximately 2000 charges after which they are reduced to 80% capacity and then they will go another 1000 charges!!!. They can also be charged in a quick 2.5 hours from totally exhausted.
The rear motor is the famous Crystalyte HS3540 rear hub motor. This motor is used extensively by high end bikes such as the Stealth fighter and the Picycle. It is reliable and robust. We are using the non sensored version for ultimate reliability. Combined with the specially modified Lyen Controller it only requires a fraction of an inch of movement before the throttle kicks in.
In testing and in other people driving the Arctrike, we found the pedaling easy. Because we have a dual sprocket and not a pulley system, there is no additional strain to your pedaling. The trike has 7 speeds and you have the option of a high geared front Chain ring or a low geared one.
Pledge $10.00 and get your own Arctrike sticker, which features our logo on genuine 3M materials. 6 1/2 x 1 3/4. You can stick it to your bumper or your house or your cat! Your name will go our list of backers with our tremendous thanks.
