Ironrise is turn based, but players are engaged throughout the entire turn round, as they can influence not only the play of their ally, but also of their enemies.
The game works with a team of Hero characters playing together against a team of Villain characters in a series of head-to-head challenges. The challenges are played using face down cards, wagering, asset management and manipulation.
Players act as managers of the doom of their opponents, and this is expressed directly by way of the "challenge." The challenge involves head-to-head concealed card play, expressing battles of martial prowess, savvy, ingenuity, and evasion. A challenge is the chief way any given encounter or quest is resolved.
Heroes and Villains have their boards set up in opposite configurations, so they oppose each other across the table. A player's challenge slots (Martial, Savvy, etc.) will line up with their opponent's.
From a Hero's point of view, a basic Challenge would progress as follows:
Ironrise is set in a steampunk fantasy world created for a tabletop role-playing game five years ago. You can find a primer for this world (Spirel) on our World Anvil page.
This chronicled background allows you to delve deeper into the backstory of the locations, events, and characters that make up the Ironrise world of "Spirel," should you decide to.
Below, you can find an interview done for "For Your Consideration," in which co-creator Chris discusses passion and procedure for bringing our world to life.
In Ironrise, you will play as either a Hero or Villain character. Each character has a different set of stats, resources, and special abilities which will impact your game play and strategy.
Ironrise offers a unique replayability, in that not only do the two opposing sides (Heroes vs. Villains) operate differently, but each of the 11 playable characters on each side operate in different tactical niches.
We are hoping to fund to the point where we can at least run a minimum print run (1000 units) of a game that we've put four years of effort, frustration, and love in to. We need to raise an additional $20,000 for this print, on top of what we already have. 100% of the money is earmarked towards our first print.
Our project has only one product, and there is nothing that we are withholding as a component add-on. All Kickstarter copies of Ironrise will contain everything developed to date.
We don't see any need to hold any of the characters or cards back to create the illusion of adding elements that wouldn't already exist. However, we would love to better the quality of the components at higher funding levels. These upgrades are as follow:
We have priced our shipping costs as listed below. We have priced assuming a UK warehouse, so the UK and EU shipping is lower, getting around VAT and becoming "EU Friendly."

Risks and challenges
This is our first game on Kickstarter! However, we've been careful not to rush (4 years production), and have aligned ourselves with many helpful game designers in Chicago who are successfully published.
Furthermore, there is nothing left in need of funding besides the minimum print run allocation. All expenses so far have been out of pocket, and we are not earmarking any incoming funds to pay ourselves back for those fees. Art, design, consultation, absolutely everything has already been covered.
Quality of Product: Ironrise has been meticulously tested at conventions, gaming events, and focused play runs. Rules and card text have been proofread several times over several years, and all artwork is complete. Once the campaign finishes, we will be ready to send files to the manufacturer, and begin production.
Production Time: Conventional wisdom dictates about an 8 month turn around for shipping. Since we have completed all aspects of the game, and only need to green-light the production, we don't anticipate going too far outside of that time frame. But as you know, this is Kickstarter, so delays could happen.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
