About this project
The Democratic Republic of Congo is the nineteenth most populous nation in the world with enough natural resources to rival the productive capacity of most First World countries. From the Belgian administration of King Leopold II through the torrid times of independence and the horrors of two ‘Congo’ wars, DR Congo has seen its vast economic potential wax and wane and its citizens become some of the poorest in the world.
You will play the part of an Industrial Baron whose longing to see your country rise up and take its rightful place in the world economy is so strong that you will commit your best endeavours to combat insurgents and develop the industrial might of DR Congo - you bring Hope out of Horror!
Rahdo has posted a run through of the game - see links below:

The Rule Book will be in English and German and includes translations of all the Support and Minister cards - no need to print your own!
Players build industries and expand a transport network of river, rail and roads. Oil, minerals and crops are produced and if sold via the Atlantic port of Matadi will reap rich reward. You will develop cities and harness the vast hydro-electric potential of the Congo river, to sell to the emerging urban areas.
The game itself is made up of four ‘layers’ and for ease of learning we have written the rules as four separate games, each of which can stand alone. In layer two Insurgents and Peace Keepers are introduced; in layer three the Government takes a role and in layer four International interests begin to have a strategic effect on the game play!
The game contains:
600mm x 600mm game board; 108 player counters and 4 reference cards plus 20 Government counters; 40 wooden Insurgent/Peace Keeper figures; pack of 63 cards (Support cards, Passports, Action cards and Government Ministers); 20 replica diamonds in velvet bag; 50 wooden Resource cubes; a supply of money; wooden dice; rules book in English and German; assorted other game counters for scoring etc.
See below for player counter samples:
We know that times are tight with incomes rising slowly if at all and to try to help out we are halving the shipping cost to the USA and Rest of the World and cutting by a third the cost to the EU and the UK. We want to get the game out and being played and are not trying to make wads of money - for many years we have been virtually a not for profit organisation and see no reason to change that now!
We thought about having several stretch goals, for the wooden Insurgent figures, the diamonds, a wooden die, wooden resource cubes, but decided that we wanted the game to be as high quality as possible for everyone who supports us (even if we only just reach the target amount) and so we have budgeted for those components already!
The popularity of the full colour cloth map for 'Promised Land 1250-587 BC' has meant that we are going to offer one for DRCongo as well - you will see from the pledge levels that the addition of a cloth map adds £4.00 to the cost and as the map-board looks fantastic I am sure the cloth map will be terrific! We had many compliments about the Promised Land map but will again only order as many as are pledged for, plus a dozen extras.
Rahdo is looking at the game for his own special brand of run through but for now Steve has put together a 15 minute run through of the game that shows off many of the mechanics of the game for those of you who like to know a little more before committing to a pledge - click on the link to view - enjoy!:
Risks and challenges
This is our third Kickstarter project and both previous ones have come in on schedule, with delivery to those who pledged on time (only a few games were lost by various national postal services and all of these we replaced without qualm).
We understand what could go awry with printers and transporters but we are experienced enough to factor in margins of error and are confident that if you back our project you will receive your game on time and in good condition.
We have taken the decision to pay for three sample copies of the game so that we can be assured of the quality and although we couldn't produce some elements such as the money supply in advance, the map board and cards look great - you can see images elsewhere on this site and also on www.ragnarbrothers.co.uk and the BGG page for DRCongo - http://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/170225/drcongo
