About

There’s nothing better than opening your fridge to find perfectly stacked, chilled beers. With Chock you can do that to perfection. It doesn’t matter whether you're having a party and need to fill your fridge or if you always like to keep a few tasty drinks chilled and ready to enjoy.

Chock is a simple elegant solution to stacking your bottles or cans, no matter what size they are. The triangular design creates a wedge that works in both directions. The cork form works together with micro-suction foam so that Chock can be used on any smooth polished surface, not just in your fridge.

Using Chock is super-easy. Put it foam-side down on a flat smooth surface. You can check it's sticking firmly by pushing on the side. To remove, gently lever up using the cut-away to break the suction gradually. Store Chock on your fridge wall or an underside of a shelf.

The micro-suction foam holds Chock firmly no matter how often you move it. The foam has thousands of micro-suction cups that are invisible to the naked eye. These don’t wear out or lose their strength.

Chock works on any smooth surface that is clean and dry. Glass or any similarly smooth surface works best. You can use any number of Chocks together, creating different stacks of bottles. The image below shows how you might also use a Chock when not stacking bottles or cans. You might find other great uses!

You can stack up a lot with Chock in or out of your fridge. We tested chock with 15 x 1.5L water bottles which is a total weight of 22.5Kg or 48 lbs. This test was carried out on glass. If you want to make a big stack make sure the surface is clean and dry and test it before heavy loading.

I’m sure I’m not alone when I tell this story! I was having a BBQ one weekend and of course I and friends bought some drinks. My fridge slowly started to fill with bottles of beer. I went to put some more in and the pyramid of stacked beers collapsed. Chaos ensued. Bottles of beer flew across the fridge shelf. I tried to grab them but I was too slow. Two fell out onto the floor and smashed, one spraying me and everything within range with cold and soon to be sticky beer. What a waste of beer! And I spent 10 minutes washing the floor, fridge and myself.

Even opening the fridge you sometimes feel you need to be ready to test your reactions, hoping the bottles are not going to jump out at you. This occasion and a few others got me thinking about how to stop this from happening. I had recently just completed another Kickstarter campaign for Corknet and wanted to work with cork again.  Then I came across micro-suction foam. After a number of prototypes and tests I had the solution.

Development of Chock left to right

Cork : Chock will be produced from recycled cork granules. These granules go through a special process before being poured into a mould. The cork is then subjected to heat and pressure which bonds the cork granules together creating the shape of Chock. Chock is then hand finished. This will all be done at the same specialist factory in Portugal that I used to produce Corknet.

Micro-Suction Foam : The Foam is produced by a company based in Japan. The rolls will be shipped to the UK where they will be split and die cut, creating the final foam inserts.

Packaging : This will be produced in the UK from recycled paper card tubes. Using tubes as packaging will reduce waste and provide the perfect protection for Chock.

Final assembly : All the final parts will be brought together here in London, where I’ll be able to oversee final quality checks before Chock is packaged ready for shipping.

Production & Fulfilment Schedule
Production & Fulfilment Schedule

Launching a new product takes a lot of time and investment. We have put a lot of time into getting Chock this far but now need support with the final challenges. That is why we need your support on Kickstarter. We need help to be able to meet minimum order quantities and to be able to pay for the final development and production of custom tooling. By being a backer of this project you’ll be rewarded by being one the first people to own a Chock and you'll be helping to support a growing business. You can help by backing the project or spreading the word, and hopefully with your help we can make Chock a reality.

The Foam : If the foam starts to lose strength from getting dirty, simply wipe it clean with a damp cloth to restore it’s original sticking strength. It works best when used on a clean dry smooth surface.

Cork : If the cork gets dirty wipe it clean with a damp cloth, do not use detergent, and leave it to dry out of direct sunlight. If the cork is left in sunlight it will become lighter in colour, this doesn’t affect its strength though.

Chock has been designed and made to be as environmentally efficient as possible. Chock and its packaging uses recycled material and is recyclable where possible. We believe we can do more and that is why 5% of the profits will be donated to the Word Land Trust

Risks and challenges

There are always risks in launching a new product. From past experience the most challenging part is having to deal with manufacturing and shipping delays. With Chock I'll be working with just three suppliers. I now have a good relationship with the cork producers in Portugal and understand their time scales better and what might cause possible delays. Final assembly will be carried out in London under my supervision so we'll be able to control the final quality of each item.
We'll post regular updates letting you know how everything is going and will also inform you of any delays or problems.
