ArtHotel was a ten-day art event that captivated the city of Sacramento and beyond. 13,000 people visited ArtHotel with an estimated 20,000 turned away, unable to experience it due to high demand and capacity limitations. Press from the event reached every corner of our region and as far as Europe.
The project took place in an abandoned apartment building where over 130 artists created an immersive temporary art experience.
The ripples of ArtHotel can still be felt to this day. The project's success proved the concept that Sacramento can sustain and benefit from a contemporary, experimental art exhibition. Now, M5Arts is diving full steam ahead into our next project: ArtStreet. We need your help to do it.
All the funds raised go directly to support the selected artists. Your support makes you more than a donor, it makes you a collaborator with the artists.
ArtStreet will be open more than twice as long as ArtHotel and will have a six times higher capacity for visitors. M5Arts is committed to keeping this event free and open to anyone and everyone.
ArtStreet will contribute to M5Arts' speculation of different models of exhibition and art. We are exploring strategies and ways of thinking about curating by using a variety of innovative approaches. ArtStreet will be an exhibition and forum for serious and playful thinking about art and the vital role it plays in a culture's success in the world today.
ArtStreet will contain multiple mediums: painting, photography, new media, music, dance, theater, video, film, and literature screenings. It will be this region's most ambitious art event ever.
Our ArtHotel shirts and hoodies sold out every day that we brought them to the event. It was a full-time job for our screen printer. Each night he would print as many as he could print, and then each day he would come back and sell out. We paid attention so now ArtStreet shirts are part of the Kickstarter!
The ArtHotel hoodies were also a big hit, so we are making ArtStreet Hoodies part of the ArtStreet Kickstarter as well.
The ArtHotel book was a huge undertaking, but we felt that it was important to document the event. We sourced photos from over 100 photographers and communicated with artists. It is currently being printed and we anticipate their arrival during our ArtStreet Kickstarter campaign. For ArtStreet, we will create a similar book which should be ready for delivery by the end of 2017.
Risks and challenges
ArtHotel was run every day with an army of volunteers. We currently have a volunteer questionnaire that you can fill out on our website:
Are you an artist interested in submitting a proposal for ArtStreet? Our artist call receives project submissions from all over the world. Check out the call on our website:
This project is far bigger than any one person, or even one group of people - it takes a community to prop it up. Kickstarter is a part of that community, and so is all of Sacramento. Thank you for taking the time to check out our project.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
