Spell will be a short, narrative film that will push the boundaries of the medium. It will contain Shakespearian style monologues written in sonnet form, which address hard-hitting themes of poverty and sexual exploitation. It will seek to accomplish this same contradiction visually by filming the gritty landscape of Harlem in a way that is expressionistic and at times abstract. It will push the boundaries of realism by creating a world in which magic exists. These stylistic touches are all intended to serve the love story that is at the heart of this film. The theme being that love, even in amidst urban blight is poetic, wonderful and magical.
In this urban fairytale, Femi and DaShaun are two teenagers from Harlem who are living against the odds. They are poor, they are ignored by their single parents, but they find each other and fall in love. Their love is threatened when an older gangster also falls in love with Femi and determines to have her for himself, whether she consents or not. As this confrontation heads towards tragedy, Femi and DaShaun receive magical assistance from and old woman who is more than she appears.
WHY WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT
Everyone knows that filmmaking can be expensive. Unlike painting, or writing, it usually takes many people working in collaboration to realize film art. Then, for those people who only relate to film as a business, Spell will not be a film whose commercial value is apparent. Hollywood would never fund this film. As with other art forms throughout history, innovative filmmaking may come to rely on patrons of the arts, such as you.
No one will get rich on this film, most of the workers are volunteering their time, or taking minimal salaries just to cover their expenses. The funds raised will help cover basic costs such as equipment rental and feeding the crew.
What we promise in return for your support is that we will do all we can to make a film that you will be proud to have been a patron of. Thank you for your consideration.
