About

Pactivist is a community driven social-networking app/vertical site that will be a cross between Match.com, Pinterest, Edison Nation and an online lifestyle magazine. Whatever your dream or pet ambition—writing a novel, losing 10 pounds, planting a community garden, a DIY project you’ve been putting off, starting a home business, or maybe going back to school or raising money/awareness for your favorite cause—users will be paired with a partner (or partners) for a classic, “I will if you will.”

The “match-up” portion of the site (“Task Pacts”) will showcase personal profiles organized by various interest categories, each containing basic information such as skill level, personal work style (laid back, stop-at-nothing, etc.), desired time frame to complete the ultimate goal, and a brief outline of what each person hopes to accomplish. Status will reflect whether the user is actively searching for a partner or currently in a Task Pact, and whether they prefer a one-on-one, small group or open partnership scenario.

Example:

  • User Name: Gatsby, Anyone?
  • Status: Active Search
  • Goal: Finish the novel that’s been collecting dust in my desk for 10 years
  • Scope of Work: 100,000-word novel about a fictional female athlete in the 1930s who passes for a man and plays a season of Major League Baseball before being found out.
  • Personal Work Style: Laid-back, but dependable on deadlines
  • My Skill Level: Bachelor’s Degree in English Lit/Creative Writing, no professional credentials
  • Seeking Task Partner To: Write a chapter of his or her own novel in accordance with agreed schedule. Reciprocal reading/critique of chapters is desired with the right candidate.
  • Ballpark Schedule: One chapter or a predetermined number of words to per month until novels are complete.
  • Deal Breaker: Vampires, werewolves, etc.
  • Karma Points: If I finish my book first, I will continue to hold you accountable for completing and agree to read a reasonable number of additional chapters (up to five), and hope that you would do the same.
  • Status: Open
  • Single partner or group? Single preferred, small group possible

Revenue Streams: In addition to traditional advertising,Pactivist would be free to join and use boards, etc., but a minimal fee would be charged to enter into a Task Pact to defray hosting costs and also used as prize money for completed project winners on the Inspiration Board. Non-profit, charitable causes, or arts-related pacts could potentially be linked to funding sites such as Kickstarter, Indigogo or GoFundMe.

Registered users will contact others with similar goals and enter into a negotiated “Task Pact.” These Task Pacts can be formatted with sliding parameters to incorporate monthly, weekly or daily goals, accountability checkpoints, and a final deadline.

Task Pacts are nonbinding in any legal way, except as follows: Disclaimer language for the site must clearly state that no tasks that involve illegal activity will be condoned, and no illegal acts including but not limited to: libel, copyright infringement, theft of intellectual property, or any criminal enterprise will be tolerated, nor are such acts the responsibility of the site in regard to any legal action. (Tasks will be moderated, and those that do not meet legal criteria will be deleted.)

Users can post their progress to a private (pact partner[s] only) or public timeline. For the public option, other registered users will be able to leave comments, advice, encouragement, etc., and content may be selected for later use in the magazine or Inspiration Board (see below).

Community Message Boards, also organized by topic categories, will allow users to interact.

Completed tasks can be posted to an “Inspiration Board,” similar to Pinterest. Community members can like/vote for “Most Inspiring Task,” whose creators can potentially win prizes from sponsors or advertisers, or potential Task Pact revenue (see below).

Pactivist Mag will feature a series of verticals geared to the various Task Pact categories.  Content will include Interactive Blogs by subject matter experts who can offer ideas, advice, and feedback to users. Other editorial will include features and profiles on selected Task Pact projects and their co-creators, essays, and vertical-specific news, trends, quizzes, etc.

Pactivist Kids could be a spin-off of the entire site/app geared toward a younger audience. It would require adult supervision, but this would be a great place to feature S.T.E.M. projects, healthy eating, anti-bullying, games, and creative outlets for children.

The Pactivist APP will be streamlined to incorporate those features of the social networking and magazine portions of the site best suited to mobile applications.

Traditional Social Media: Along with Pactivist Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, Pinterest pages, etc. Pactivist YouTube Channel will showcase curated content featuring the best in ongoing and completed Task Pacts.

Budget: The numbers are based on a project estimate from a talented developer to create the site and apps with all the requisite technical bells and whistles, plus a little extra to cover the "fine print" and legal fees inherent to starting any business.

Risks and challenges

My philosophy for this project is: "If you don't know, ask." That means consulting experts and putting the people who do know what needs to be done (especially the technical end) and how to do it in place, and paying them upfront. That's factored into the budget. I'm not a developer. Building the site and the app, getting it up and running, I will leave in the capable hands of someone whose work I consider to be exemplary. Once we get on our feet, I'd like stay active in the verticals. As a writer/editor with 20-plus years' experience, I think I can bring a lot to the table (and maybe, if there's time, finish my novel).

    "Grrracie! A Stray Dog's Tale"

Told in first-canine, Grrracie follows the adventures of an urban pup who finds herself dumped by the highway, and details her harrowing days and nights on the run. After landing in an animal shelter, where she’s terrorized by a singing, dancing street mutt (think James Cagney Yankee Doodling his way through “Public Enemy, the Musical”), it looks like all is lost...or is it? "Peculiar Parables for a Dubious Millennium"

A collection of curiously delightful fables aimed at sophisticated, slightly off-kilter kids and the proud parents who are raising them just outside the box, off the wall...and a little bit to the left of center. (Think “Chicken Soup for the Sardonic Soul of the Princess Bride,” or James Thurber and Jules Pfeiffer meet Edward Gorey and Oscar Wilde in a smack-down grudge match...with Lemony Snicket as referee.)
