"Off the Leash" is an anthropomorphic graphic novel that takes place in the near future in Washington D.C. Focusing primarily on two detectives named David and Tiffany; the two must put their differences aside in order to solve crimes. Done in film noir/pulp fiction style "Off the Leash" Volume 1 will focus on the first case David and Tiffany are assigned together: the death of David's partner John Rodgers.
I've had the idea for this comic for the last 5 years, but since I have little to no drawing ability it was always a fantasy. Now with the help of kickstarter I can pay my artist: Preston Asevedo to make "Off the Leash" a reality.
"Off the Leash" is more than a graphic novel concerned with the mystery of the week, this is a comic that is designed to delve into powerful and sometimes equally sensitive issues. I want people to be left thinking and discussing when done with an issue/volume. "Off the Leash" is very much so a study of humanity; just with characters not as human in appearance.
When making "Off the Leash" I was inspired by both classic film noir and neo noir. Drawing from particular favorites such as "Kansas City Confidential", "The Third Man", "Touch of Evil", "Se7en" "L.A. Confidential" and "Chinatown".
The style is of course done as a homage to film noir. Since the primary story takes place in 2017 it is by definition a neo-noir but there are obvious throwbacks to the 1940's/50's in terms of fashion, dialect and tone. Preston Asevedo has done a brilliant job bringing this aura to the page.
Of course with it's anthropomorphic style there is the ability to bring many different animals into the fold. While the majority that will be seen are either canines, felines or birds of some sort there is plenty of room for almost every type of animal to make an appearance. Not to mention the near endless amount when it comes to breeds of cats and dogs. If you have a pet/animal you would like to see in "Off the Leash" you can pledge accordingly to have that animal made into a character in the comic. Hurry though there is limited space!

Where and What is the money going to?
As stated ensuring that the artist(s) of "Off the Leash" are compensated is of most importance with this kickstarter project, but also funds are needed for publishing, distribution and marketing. I plan to make multiple issues/volumes of "Off the Leash" that are all part of an overarching storyline. This is of course with the hope that Volume 1 will gain a fan base and thus I will require less funds to create volume 2. And so on and so forth. But that first issue can't be made without your help!

Risks and challenges
One obstacle that is always a possibility is just that it ends up taking a bit longer than expected to finish artwork for each issue. Delays should not be significant but if they are hopefully the next issue will be able to be released earlier.
Another challenge is ensuring that we have the right publisher. At the moment we plan to go with lulu.com for our publishing, but that could change depending on what we feel is the best direction for the comic and it's creative integrity. At this point in time lulu seems the most adept for our needs, but if anything were to change our potential backers and already pledged backers will be notified before a decision has been made.
The entire script for volume 1 has already been written out, delays in writing should not happen even with planned proofreads/rewrites. However if there is a significant delay you could expect an issue to be released a month later.
This is the 1st ever comic I've ever worked on so I'm still learning, that's a risk in it of itself. But it's a challenge I'm ready to take head on and I think everyone will be satisfied with the results.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
The primary use of the funds will be to pay the artist and letterer for their work on the comic. It will also be used for marketing/distribution of "Off the Leash".
You get rewards 1-7 as well as the Bronze Package that gives you an autograph from Matthew S. Robinson on your print copy of "Off the Leash"
Volume 1 will feature roughly 84+ pages of original content.
