Mummy's Boy is an Australian short film (30 minutes), based on a play written by Daniel Hayward. The film is about a mother and her gay son, and the hot guy that enters their lives... briefly.
It's about family and control, sexuality and secrets. It's about relationships and lust... and doing whatever is necessary to survive.
Check out the "about video":
Daniel first showed me the script for his original play back in 2015 and I loved it immediately. Since then it was merely a matter of time before I just had to do something with it. Together we adapted it to a screenplay in February this year, and then set about finding our cast.
Casting took about a month. We had over 135 applications for the 3 leads and narrowed that down to about 25 auditions. Already on board at this stage was Nicholson Ren, our Director of Photography (DOP), and Yvette Brereton, our Art Director.
Since then we've gathered more than 20 talented crew and supporting actors. More about them in updates and on the Facebook page.
Between now and the shoot dates (beginning on the 22nd of June) we will be searching for more supporting actors and extras. There's also lots of pre-production work to be done, like:
- Scouting for locations
- Designing sets
- Scheduling shoot days
- Hiring gear
$10,000 will go towards meeting some of the costs I will incur from the above. If we raise more, then we may be able to pay for professional post production, hire better camera gear and lighting, and ensure our hard working crew are compensated fairly.
Ultimately I will submit the film to festivals and if it does well then who knows where after that...
I'm a filmmaker and storyteller. I most love Directing, but I also have experience as a Producer, Writer, Assistant Director, DOP, and editor. I made my first film 5 years ago and thought, "Hey this is fun! Let's do more!" Since then I've worked on several other people's shorts, a feature film, a music video and a web series.
I love making a story come to life, working with it from conception, right through to being able to show it to audiences and see their reactions.
Mummy's Boy is my 5th film and my biggest project to date.

Nicholson is a self taught cinematographer and colourist specialising in narrative fictional drama. He prefers a low key look to make his work look as natural as possible and will make the most out of what is available to create the best images.

Risks and challenges
Because we are an independent short film and not reliant on any other agencies our risks are minimal, and just those typical for our level of production. Primary risks would be delays due to accident or illness and we will take every OSH safety measure possible to mitigate the risk here. Any rescheduling should only set us back by as much as 1 month.
We are fully insured, with coverage for public liability and workers.
Most of our shoot days are indoors and on private property, so there should be few issues there in regard to weather or external disruptions.
