Thanks for taking the time to check out my latest project, the Curve Cover for the iPad3! As a designer I have been making high-end luxury objects for years. My design style has been described as timeless and elegant with meticulous attention to detail. Personally I just like to make things that I think are beautiful. My work is best known for using digital tools such as CAD and CNC Machines to create designs that look one of a kind. What can I say... I’m in love with form almost as much as with process. Which is why I take a hands on approach to every design I create. With this project I wanted to create something that brings beauty and luxury to an everyday object. Introducing the Curve Cover for iPad 3...
These elegant wooden covers lend themselves to variety of applications from digital picture frames to everyday usage!
About the curve cover:
Recently I purchased an iPad 3 to show off my portfolio when I was at the International Contemporary Furniture Fair (ICFF) in NYC. I kept feeling like I needed to make this new technology my own some way. When I began this project, I had only one goal in mind: create something beautiful that I would want to compliment the new technology in my life. Simply put: a beautiful form. I brought the Curve Cover with me to the show and the cover itself got as much if not more attention as my furniture did! This is when I decided to take this project to the next level of getting it produced in a low volume.
Prototyping the idea:
Designing a cover is one thing, but getting it produced is another. I wanted to be sure that if I was going to put a product out there, that it would have every bit of care and attention to detail that my luxury furniture design is known for. Luckily I happen to own my own Shopbot CNC machine- So I spent the last couple of months refining the design for production. With three rounds of prototyping done, finally I think we have a design and process that's worthy of repeating for production. The Curve Cover is a snap fit wooden cover for the iPad 3. The iPad is nestled safely between two pieces of naturally durable wood that have been specially carved on both the inside and outside for a precision fit. That's 4 milling operations per cover. Once the parts are carved they are paired for sanding and finish. Each piece is as individual as the wood that they are carved from.
Why I need your help to fund my
Kickstarter Goal: $25,000
This kickstarter project is the launch of my first product for mass production under the Brooke M Davis Design Brand. It has always been my dream to launch my own line of products that encompass my design style! As an industrial designer, I have made many products for others but the Curve Cover is the first that is 100% my own vision! I have set my kickstarter goal at $25,000- which enables me to put these cases into small run CNC production. These are luxury items that require a lot of labor and love. The $25,000 will help to ensure that I can produce enough volume to get the production cost down to a reasonable rate. We already have a wait list for these and with your funding, we can take this from idea to production! Thanks for your support !
The production costs include:
Raw Material - purchase/ delivery
Material Prep - truing the wood and cutting them into blanks
CNC Jigs - material/ run time
CNC Parts Setup and Run Time - 4 operations
Sanding - remove all tool marks
Finish - spray lacquer finish
Packaging & Shipping
The major hurdles:
Production: Using the Shopbot 100KGarages.com network- I will be outsourcing and overseeing production of the covers. There is quite a bit of prep work that must go on with the wood before it goes on the CNC machine. Once the parts are produced, they will be delivered to a central location for sanding and finishing.
Sanding/ Finishing: In order to get all of the parts finished in a timely manner, a large amount of finishing work will be required. Fear not though - I already have a sanding team in place and we will hire more people to help with the overflow. I then have a trusted finisher who will then spray all of the parts with lacquer. Those who purchase the signed editions will get a hand rubbed finish done in-house.
Distribution:The last hurdle is getting products to you our backers on time! We have already specified all cost that are related to shipping like boxes, bubble wrap, and bulk weight rates for getting it to you in a timely manner.
Be sure to sign up through the early backer special to make sure your limited edition cases that are signed and numbered! The Each case will be issued with an authentication certificate.

Risks and challenges
The biggest challenge with this project is that wood is a natural material that expands and contracts. My design is creates a lot of forces at play within the material, so I tired to mitigate those forces through extensive prototyping. Depending on different times of the year/ parts of the country and weather conditions the "snap fit" may be looser at times than others. If in production this gets to be too big of a challenge, we will then use a small magnet to align the case parts. We have already done research and know this will not affect the ipad 3 functions.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
