About

What is CAPACETE?

CAPACETE is the longest running arts and culture international exchange and residency program in Brazil with over 18 years of experience in building situations and strategies, which challenge the contemporary state of culture, economy and education. Our primary function embraces self-organized, artist-run, participatory and collaborative modes of action as a fundamental part of the content and structure of our activities. We do this through providing an environment where students involved in artistic or curatorial practice and cultural research engage in discussions, seminars and excursions related to the historical, social, political and critical analysis of the contemporary cultural and artistic landscape. Participants from across the world learn and work together creating projects which are truly global yet still strongly influenced and located in Brazil.

Independence and freedom in the designing of our program was and is always our priority. And this is what we intend to continue with your help. Through your generous support in this endeavor, two Brazilians, curator Marilia Loureiro and artist Caetano Carvalho will be able to participate in the 2016 CAPACETE artistic, cultural and educational program, expand their practice and make a meaningful contribution to the artistic landscape in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and the world. We will return your generous favor with the rewards listed on the right.

Marilia Loureiro, born in São Paulo (1988) lives and works between São Paulo and Colombia. Graduated in Political Science in São Paulo, she did part of her studies at Institut d’Études Politiques de Paris (Sciences-Po) and holds a master degree at Programa de Estudios Independientes (PEI) from the Museo d’Art Contemporani de Barcelona (MACBA). She worked at 29ª Bienal de São Paulo and as part of the curatorial team at Museu de Arte Moderna de São Paulo (MAM-SP). Marilia also took part in independent spaces in São Paulo: at Ateliê397 she co-founded the online critique magazine MARÉ and at Casa Tomada she was the researcher in resident. Marilia is currently curator at Lugar a Dudas in Cali, Colombia.

What will CAPACETE do to reach its goals?

  • CAPACETE provides time and space for encounters that fuel individual practices as well as long lasting relationships.
  • CAPACETE creates a collaborative platform for learning processes and sharing of individual experiences in the local context of Rio de Janeiro through engagement of seminars/workshops on critical theory around topics including among others anthropology, psychology, sociology, architecture, art and culture.

  • CAPACETE provides an infrastructure to focus on individual research and production.
  • CAPACETE offers practical support and advisory assistance for the individual and/or group projects of the participants. While developing relationships over time, it offers regular reflection about the participants' practices.

  • CAPACETE maintains and constantly expands a broad community of local and international relationships, working with artists and thinkers whose endeavours articulate the theoretical world with artistic presentations in several formats and dynamics and for different audiences.
  • CAPACETE shares contemporary aesthetic production with the local scene of Rio de Janeiro and creates an interface between international artists and local contexts.

  • CAPACETE organizes weekly events with talks, performances and artisanal food. The events are open to general public and are widely advertised via social media and a newsletter. This creates a social gathering with a highly stimulated atmosphere of lively exchange.
  • CAPACETE acts as publisher of books.
  • CAPACETE acts as a laboratory for experimentation for kids.

What is the mission of CAPACETE?

Our globalized contexts are structured by an unequal social distribution of labour and wealth, increasingly moulded by speculative market-based economics. This reduces and neutralizes the concrete ethical and political reach of art, as well as its potential for fostering discussion and inspiring other ways of working, thinking, relating, and living.

CAPACETE is designed to reflect the cross-disciplinary character of contemporary aesthetic practices. Our intention is to remain responsive and fluid throughout this process, adjusting our strategies, tactics, and aims as we develop. An integral aim of our program is to continually expand our platform of exchange, by bringing in new participants and interlocutors, fostering relationships with different institutions and organizations, as well as by deepening our ties and relationships with established collaborators.

CAPACETE acts at the intersection of various social and professional fields, thus requiring the selected participants to fully embrace an open and “horizontal” dialogue, and to actively engage in program activities by instigating projects that can in turn act as platforms for disseminating information, promoting active responses, and generating public debate.

CAPACETE makes a careful selection of participants, consisting of highly motivated and promising artists, thinkers and curators. The selection is made with the possibility in mind that the individual practices will benefit from their presence in Rio and that their combination in a group will create strong dynamics for the benefit of all.

How will we use your contribution?

CAPACETE needs additional resources of USD 20 000 to fulfill its objectives to support two Brazilian artists with their stay in Rio de Janeiro, today one of the most expensive cities in Brazil. Your support allows for the physical possibility of their stay, which would entail:

  • Rent for housing
  • Water, electricity and amenities
  • Internal travel within Brazil and local transport
  • General living expenses
  • Group excursions
  • Miscellaneous expenses

When is the project taking place?

From March until December 2016.

Risks and challenges

Whilst many challenges exist in the contemporary art sector, Capacete is dedicated to providing a platform for innovative thought and creative activity.

The main challenge to the outcome would be if the Brazilian participants could no longer participate in the program or decide to leave the program. In such an event, an alternative would be found where Brazilian individuals who have applied but did not make the original cohort would be incorporated into the project.

Possibly only a natural disaster or a government shutdown could stop us.
