It was just under a year ago when Ezra Lipp made the decision that after years of touring and performing as a Bay Area based freelance drummer (with many amazing and reputable artists like Phil Lesh & Friends, Sean Hayes, Mohsen Namjoo and many many others) it was time for him to break out of his role as perpetual sideman, and step up as a composer and band-leader and create a collaborative vehicle for him to fully express his unique musicality, personality, and heartfelt vision, while leaving the creative potential unbound.
Fast forward a little bit and we now have one of the Bay Area's newest and most exciting trios, Magic In The Other. Comprised of veteran players and improvisatory pro's Steve Adams on bass (ALO, Nicki Bluhm) and Roger Riedlbauer on guitars (Jolie Holland, Mercury Falls), in their brief, but already dense time rehearsing and performing as this unit, Glide Magazine has already said the following...
"An intelligent music listener’s dream. The music is danceable but also worthy of focus to see their communication in real time...It is something special to bear witness to the birth of a band that could potentially take a scene by storm, you feel like you’re in on something – witness to something great...This band is worth your ears..." - Glide Magazine
In order to continue this journey of growing and developing this band as well as refining a unique sound that can resonate with people and add joy and healing in people's lives, the band feels it is an imperative to make an amazing debut album of which they have booked extended sessions in December and January at one of the finest studios in Northern California, the famed Tiny Telephone (Death Cab For Cutie, John Vanderslice, Sleater-Kinney, The Mountain Goats, Spoon, etc.) The goal is to emerge from these sessions with a brand new fabulous LP of original music that will be available digitally, on CD, as well as vinyl and that will be provide hours of listening pleasure for years to come.
While the core trio (Lipp, Adams, Ridelbauer) will widely be featured on this record there has been affirmative communication of potentially involving other artists for guest appearances such as Brad Barr (The Barr Brothers, The Slip), Billy Martin (Medeski Martin & Wood), Reed Mathis (Electric Beethoven), Marco Benevento (Joe Russo's Almost Dead, Garage A Trois), Dan "Lebo" Lebowitz (ALO), Jason Crosby (Phil Lesh & Friends, John Mclaughlin, Jimmy Herring), and Kalmia Traver (Kalbells, Rubblebucket) to name a few, so the collaborative possibilities are vast.
On behalf of Ezra and MITO we would so appreciate your support to get this project funded and move forward with a truly wonderful and enjoyable record that will propel the band to new opportunities, and provide much quality music for you! Thank you!!!
Risks and challenges
It is our intention to have the record fully tracked and mixed by the end of January. This should give us time to have it mastered and printed with all the artwork complete for a spring 2018 release. While we are confident this is an achievable goal, under 6 months is actually an extraordinary turn around time from start to finish for recording and releasing a record. While it is not our intention, should we experience unanticipated delays in the recording or production of this record, or should opportunities emerge that deem it beneficial to temporarily push back the release date, we definitely appreciate your patience!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
