When I moved to New York after my graduation from Berklee College of Music, I soon found myself signed to an upstart indie label surrounded by a team of big name producers preparing to record an album. Before heading into the studio, I decided a vocal health check was in order. Then the wheels came off. A simple visit to the ENT revealed a vocal polyp that would require surgery (yup, just like Adele). Soon after, the label disbanded and I was left unemployed, with a broken instrument, and no health insurance. Enter Kris Rogers (aka the Hotness). Kris and I met about 13 years ago back in Topeka, KS. We both came up through Helen Hocker Theater (shout out to Jo Huseman!) which was THE spot that provided real performance opportunities for any young creative types in our hometown. Kris was the go to bass player. After graduating from the University of Kansas, he went on to drop his dope grooves on cruise ships and national/international tours of broadway shows. Eventually he also landed in New York City. For me, it was at the perfect time. I found my polyp to be incredibly debilitating and music became a real source of frustration. I was standing still but Kris really gave me the push I needed to keep moving forward. We started by getting together about once a month and just playing a few tunes that we liked and working on some originals. I then was able to find a 9 to 5 that gave me the health insurance I needed to get my polyp removed (thanks URJ!). Those original few tunes evolved into a set and we played our first gig together in May of 2011 and we've been playing regularly around the city ever since.
In late July, Kris and I will be heading to Scottsdale, AZ to record with Scott Leader at his Brick Road Studio. I mean you know we're committed if we're voluntarily traveling to Arizona in July. After reaching our goal of $6,500 we will have the ability to record a 4 song album of originals in an industry standard recording facility, bring in great studio musicians (drums, keys, and even a gospel choir for background vocals!) to fill out our sound, and market our finished product. The estimated completion date is to be late August or early September culminating with an album release party at a to be determined location in New York City. Should we surpass our goal, that surplus funding will be invested directly into the album, expanding to 5 or more songs, allowing ourselves to dream a bit on arrangements and tracking, and strengthening our marketing efforts.
We're incredibly hyped about this! We'll be in creative control from start to finish and this will be OURS. That means a great deal. And it's not just our's like Adam Karol and The Hotness but all of YOURS as well. This will no doubt be a labor love and we're looking forward to the journey.
