Francois Verollet: Having used the prototype…for quite a few days, I'm very happy with it. Knowing the charge status straight from the wire while driving is a key feature for me…When night driving, I don't have to blindly search for my mobile phone on the passenger seat :-D...definitely adds a funky touch to my old fashion car ;-)…ordered as well a mini-USB cable (EL Cable) on the EL-Factory website as the effect is very worth it.

What is EL Power Cord
EL stands for electroluminescence which is an optical and electrical phenomenon in which a material emits light in response to the pass of electric field. EL wire can be used in a wide variety of applications, e.g. car decoration, emergency lighting, toys etc. Our EL power cord has three EL wires in the middle of it. With each wire being lighted up in programmed sequence, it can simulate current flow from the power source to the charging device. The power is carried by two isolated copper wires beside EL wires.
Traditional EL wire
Probably the first application of EL wire beyond decoration is USB cable (charge cable). It’s the first generation of EL wire. However the intensity of the light and maximum carrying current allowed is not totally satisfying. Therefore, based on the first generation, we’ve improved it further to create the second generation, combined with the traditional car charger to form this brilliant cool charger, with higher brightness and carrying power. We’ve noticed that some may have built-in USB port in their cars, so would prefer data cables, in which case we have EL USB cables with 3 types of connectors you could choose from our web (www.el-factory.com).

How does it work
Once the EL Charger plugged into the car’s cigarette lighter, the internal buck circuit will convert the car’s 12V/24V output to 5V first, and the build-in microprocessor will check the circuit status of whether the EL Charger is in normal working state. It will light up the EL wires to let users know the charger is ready to use.
When a device is connected to the EL Charger, the microprocessor will monitor the output current and control the light flow speed.
The higher the charging current, the faster the light flow will be. If the device is fully charged or the charging current is less than 250mA, the microprocessor will turn off the EL wires to inform users that the charging process is complete. Hence it provides a signal understood from far away and merely looking over can provide the user with more information than ever before.

Some may say that they’ve already got a portable power bank, but I’d say that is Not Enough for travellers with mobile devices, because there must be times that you forgot to take it or recharge it, leaving your gadgets powered off eventually. In this situation, having a charger in car can solve this problem, getting your mobiles well-charged when arriving at your destination.

1, 3D design
We design our 3D structure by using Pro-Engineer, so the file can be used directly for tooling.
2, 3D printed prototype
To ensure the strength of the plastic parts, we use a whole ABS plastic cube to make the prototype.
3, Polished plastic parts
Hand-polished plastic parts and the transparent ring shape holder. The metal parts and the spring are for standard car charger.
4, PCB circuit boards and parts
We tried different combinations of parts from our suppliers.
5, Assemble EL Charger
Our PCB and plastic parts are designed for easy-installing to make sure we have a faster mass production rate in the future.
6, Oil printed prototype
To give you a feeling of what final products will look like, we printed this prototype into black colour.

We know the importance of using certificated parts for making charger for APPLE devices. And we will use the manufacture partner with MFi license for this project. As our manufacture partner has existing production lines for APPLE’s charging cable, car charger and AC adapter, it normally takes 4 weeks for us to get MFi certification for the EL Charger. The estimated daily production rate for EL Charger is 1000PCS/DAY with 15 days in advance to buy parts.
Meet Our Team
We are a small team of engineers, designers and entrepreneurs. John Cowan is the team leader, who has been working in the EL industry for over 10 years and believes EL wire is not just for decoration. Yongjiang Ying owns an EL wire factory in China and he is the first one in the world to combine EL wire and power cord together to make this unique EL power cord. James Bennett is a super clever designer and his ring-shape holder design amazed all of us. Jiajian He is our CFO and he has very good relationship with our manufacture partners.

Risks and challenges
CAN WE MANUFACTURE EL CHARGER AND DELIVER ON TIME?
As in the electronic luminance material industry for many years, we’ve built up very good relationships with raw material suppliers, cable manufacturers, assembling factories and testing lab. We know very well what it takes to deliver a great product on time.We've already gone through many of the challenges in development. Now it’s really about whether we can produce EL Charger in volume. However, every project carries certain risks. The most common risks are potential delays in tooling, obtaining certifications, and shipping. While we feel very confident about our production timeline, these risks can never be completely eliminated. However, if anything goes wrong, we will make sure to get you all informed right away.
The diameter of the EL power cord we use for the mass production may vary from our prototype as we may need to change it to comply with APPLE's testing requirement.
